Jett Reed: Young e-scooter rider, 11, nearly lost his leg after being ‘hit and dragged' by a car in Lakelands

7NEWS01-06-2025
The family of an 11-year-old e-scooter rider who almost lost his right leg after he was hit by a car and dragged for nearly 10 metres has launched an appeal to help pay for his medical bills.
Jett Reed has spent more than a week in Perth Children's Hospital and undergone nearly 20 hours of surgery following the shocking incident that took place at the intersection of Badgerup Avenue and Yindana Boulevard in Lakelands, Mandurah at about 3.10pm on May 23.
The schoolboy's uncle, Brenton Reed, said the youngster was in pain daily adding it had been 'extremely stressful for his parents and our wider families'
He also described his nephew as a 'sweet boy' who was 'enduring what no child should be going through'.
'My nephew Jett was on his way home from school last Friday ... when he was hit by a car and dragged underneath it for approximately 10 metres,' Mr Reed posted on GoFundMe.
'Both front and back wheels of the car went over his right leg and his calf was dragged on the bitumen and severely damaged.
'As a result Jett's leg was clean broken and he has lost most of the calf muscle.
'He has already endured 18 plus hours of surgery with many more to go before even thinking about rehabilitation.
'So far the operations have reset the broken bones, and the process to move calf muscle from the good leg to the damaged leg has commenced. After this will be massive skin grafts, all while trying to prevent any infection.'
Mr Reed said he started the GoFundMe page on behalf of his brother Callan, Jett's father, who gave up work to look after his son.
'We ask for any help to assist Callan in paying for bills and travel up and down daily from Mandurah to Perth for what we think will be many months stay at the children's hospital in Perth,' he said.
'Callan works for himself so is currently without an income as he looks after his boy.
'Any donations would be greatly appreciated,
'I myself cannot even begin to imagine what they are going through and any financial assistance would be a great help to Callan during this awful time.'

Monique Ellen Burton hid baby's body behind couch

A woman concealed a pregnancy then hid the baby's body in a plastic bag behind the couch after she gave birth at home, a court has been told. Monique Ellen Burton, 35, will be sentenced in the Perth District Court on Friday charged with interfering with the corpse of her baby after police found the infant in a chest freezer in the backyard of her Geraldton home in August 2022. She is also charged with 11 counts of fraud for accepting $560 in donations from a GoFundMe page that was set up in good faith by her friend when she lied about dying from a terminal illness. A court was told Monique Ellen Burton wrapped her baby in clothing then put it in a plastic bag and hid the infant behind the couch. Picture: Jamie Thannoo/ RegionalHUB During a sentencing hearing, state prosecutor Jehna Winter told the court Burton concealed the birth from her partner of 14 years, medical staff and authorities when confronted about her pregnancy. The court heard Burton told her partner Shaun Bradley Balaam her stomach was bloated from liver cirrhosis when he asked her if she was pregnant. Ms Winter said Burton went into labour during the evening of August 19, 2022 after she and Balaam had gone to sleep and gave birth to a baby boy on the bathroom floor of her home. The court was told she wrapped the baby in clothing then placed him in a plastic bag and put him behind a couch, but it was never determined if the baby took its first breath. Picture: NewsWire / Sharon Smith She said when Balaam woke the next day he found Burton in the bathroom pale, her stomach was no longer bloated and she had blood on her body. Burton told him she had been up all night vomiting so he took her to hospital. When Balaam returned home later that day, he searched for a mobile phone belonging to his mother, who had been at the house looking after their children, and discovered a black plastic bag behind the couch. He could not see what was inside the bag, but felt a heavy, big, hard lump which he thought could be a baby because Burton had a history of concealing pregnancies. The court was told Balaam wrapped the bag in another black garbage bag and put it in a freezer without checking if it was a baby. She was flown to King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth because of her condition and continued to deny to her partner and medical staff that she had a baby despite medical tests results. Burton eventually admitted to hospital staff what happened saying, 'I don't know what is wrong with me,' and the baby had been stillborn after a social worker conducted an investigation revealing Burton had a history of concealing pregnancies. Mr Winter said Balaam told officers he had no idea what was in the bag and freaked out it could be a baby but did not check in case it was. He told police he thought the best thing to do was to put the bag in the freezer because that is what would happen at a morgue. Burton was arrested and interviewed by police in January 2024, when she told officers her memory was hazy and she thought it had been a dream. Balaam was previously charged with not having a lawful excuse to improperly interfere with a corpse and was sentenced to a 12 month community based order program and supervision requirements. Defence lawyer Anthony Elliott told the Perth District Court his client had emotional anxiety associated with pregnancies. Picture: NewsWire / Ross Swanborough. She pleaded guilty to interfering with a corpse in the Geraldton Magistrates Court in November last year. Burton's defence lawyer Anthony Elliot said his client suffered emotional anxiety associated with pregnancies. He told the court a psychological report found Burton had a history of adjustment disorder, depressive episodes, unresolved grief, no family support, relationship difficulties and anxiety. She was also plagued with thoughts of worthlessness, hopelessness and personal failure. Burton will be sentenced in the Perth District Court on Friday.

Geraldton mum to be sentenced over newborn baby found in freezer

A mother secretly gave birth on her lounge room floor before the baby boy was put into a bag, tossed behind a couch and later found in a freezer by police, a court has been told. Monique Burton, from Geraldton, four hours north of Perth, had concealed the pregnancy by telling her partner and family that she had bloating from terminal liver cancer. She fell ill shortly after giving birth and was taken to hospital where she repeatedly denied the pregnancy, according to doctors. Burton was later flown to King Edward Memorial Hospital in Perth where she eventually confessed to a hospital social worker she had been pregnant. Police then searched her home and found the baby's body wrapped in a garbage bag and placed in a chest freezer. A district court was told Burton secretly gave birth on the floor of her lounge room in August 2022, while her partner and children slept in other rooms. Burton admitted she wrapped the infant in her underwear and leggings before placing him in a garbage bag and tossing him behind the couch. The now 35-year-old then went to sleep, and did not tell anyone. She was taken to hospital the next day, where doctors picked up signs of a recent pregnancy and birth. It was her partner who discovered the bag when he was searching for a lost mobile phone under the couch. He claims he never opened it but later told police he suspected it might have been a baby. Instead of calling police, he placed the bag in the freezer. Methamphetamine was found in the infant's system during a post-mortem examination, although a cause of death has not been determined. Burton also admitted to accepting thousands of dollars from the public through a GoFundMe page set up after she faked having cancer. Burton, who pleaded guilty to interfering with a corpse and fraud over the fundraiser, will be sentenced on Friday. Her partner received a 12-month community based order for improper interference with a corpse.
