RGG Studio's 'Project Century' Is Now 'Stranger Than Heaven', A Detective Brawler With Survival Elements
Following its reveal at The Game Awards 2024 under the codename Project Century , SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's upcoming action brawler has made a splash at Summer Game Fest 2025, showcasing more of its brutal hand-to-hand combat, Judgment -esque detective systems, and most importantly, its new name, Stranger Than Heaven .
The game's latest trailer, set in 1943 Japan's neon-lit city streets, marks a more than three-century time jump from its initial reveal, alluding to the fact that, like its previous Project Century namesake, the game would unfold across various time periods and possibly feature multiple protagonists like 2015's Yakuza 0 .
Centred around its protagonist Mako Daito (at least, in 1943), Stranger Than Heaven looks to feature the same brutal street brawling RGG Studio is well-known for, this time with a few interesting ideas to shake up the formula.
In a move seemingly inspired by Rockstar Games' L.A. Noire and its very own detective spin-off, Judgment , the game will feature various sleuthing mechanics, with a scene in the trailer showcasing Daito taking down notes as he seemingly eavesdrops on a conversation behind closed doors.
More interestingly, however, is the apparent inclusion of various survival RPG elements, with Daito having hunger and thirst meters, marking the first time the studio has dabbled with the concept. Items in the game can also feature various effects, such as cigarettes, which 'draws immense hostility when smoking'. Decision-making will also play a key role, as a scene showcases the player choosing between killing or sparing a foe, which could potentially signal either branching story paths or multiple endings.
With RGG Studio's chops in the action brawling genre, now mixing visceral combat with detective elements and more in-depth RPG mechanics, Stranger Than Heaven is shaping up to be another tightly crafted action extravaganza from the renowned studio, and fans will surely wait with bated breathe as more information comes ahead of the game's launch.

Bandai Namco's 'Code Vein 2' Sequel Brings Anime Souls-Like Action Across Space And Time
Bandai Namco Entertainment has unveiled a teaser for Code Vein 2 at Summer Games Fest 2025, the sequel to its 2019 anime vampire souls-like, which brings a gothic twist to the game alongside what seems to be a theme revolving around time. The game will see the return of the Revenants, vampire-like beings who are the sole survivors of a post-apocalyptic world. The trailer also shows off brief snippets of its intense combat, with players facing off against monstrous bosses using a variety of weapons like dual blades, hammers, katanas and unique equipment called Jails, with the trailer also including a tease of a motorcycle which players would seemingly use for traversal. Most interestingly, however, is the game's apparent focus on the concept of time. According to Bandai's official game description, players will 'embark on a journey through a world that spans two eras, where decisions carry weight and every battle tests skill and resolve', alluding to some sort of time-swapping mechanic that might be similar to something seen in another souls-like game, 2023's The Lords of the Fallen . While its predecessor was set in a post-apocalyptic world, Code Vein 2's trailer features a distinct gothic vibe this time around, potentially signalling the ability to shift between this new medieval timeline and the one seen in the first game. Players won't have to embark on their journeys alone either, as the game will bring back its signature partner allies system, which gives players a constant companion to fight alongside them, forging bonds with them along the way and gaining enhanced abilities as a result. According to Bandai, each partner also has 'distinct skills and deep narrative connections that shape the journey', which alludes to multiple companions offering different supporting skills to cater to a player's combat style. Code Vein 2 is set for release sometime in 2026 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. 'Onimusha: Way of the Sword' Shows Off Fierce Slashing Action Against Genma Demons
With a title like Onimusha: Way of the Sword , it's only fair to assume that there will be plenty of slashing action laying in wait. A new trailer unveiled at Summer Game Fest 2025 has put that into focus, showcasing the various combat encounters that stand in the way of protagonist Miyamoto Musashi. First up is swordsman Sasaki Ganryu and wielder of the Oni Gauntlet, just like Musashi, who engages in trash talking as he locks swords with the latter. Then, there are the Genma Demons: Daidara, a towering demon that uses a bludgeoning club to wreak havoc, and Kubi Akari, a floating, soul-consuming variant. The 'Issen' technique – a swift strike executed just before an enemy's attack lands (akin to a perfect parry) – was also revealed, alongside a pair of hammer-like dual weapons, a new stage, and a mysterious woman who appears at the end of the clip. 'Fight through bloodbaths of intense swordplay action. Explore the historic Japanese capital of Edo-era Kyoto, twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice. With every stage cloaked in mystery, danger and intrigue. Battle against monstrosities from the underworld known as Genma in a tale of dark fantasy', reads the synopsis for Onimusha: Way of the Sword . 'Follow the tale of a samurai who wields the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that grants its bearer the power to slay Genma. Through gritty, blood-soaked brawls, he searches for his reason to fight. What fate awaits at the end of his path?' The upcoming mainline entry is the first in the series since 2006's Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams , making it a long-awaited and highly-anticipated revival. First announced at The Game Awards last year, it will arrive sometime in 2026, the same year that Resident Evil: Requiem is due to launch.
