Brewers can earn fans free George Webb burgers with win Tuesday
Free burgers!
The Brewers have won 11 consecutive games after defeating the Seattle Mariners, 6-0, on Monday, July 29. With a win in Tuesday night's game, the Brewers will hit a milestone (at least in Milwaukee) 12-game winning streak and earn local fans free hamburgers from George Webb, a local restaurant chain.
The restaurant's namesake, George Webb, was an avid baseball fan and the genesis of the 12-game winning streak promotion dates back to the minor league Milwaukee Brewers and through the brief tenure of the Milwaukee Braves. However, it's been the current incarnation of the Brewers who have fed fans with free burgers.
How many times has George Webb given out free burgers after the Brewers won 12 straight games?
Two times.
The most recent was in 2018, when the Brewers won the final seven games of the regular season, prevailed in the one-game NL Central tiebreaker against the rival Chicago Cubs, swept the Colorado Rockies in three games in the division series and then won Game 1 of the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The most famous instance of the Brewers prompting George Webb's 12-game win streak promotion was in 1987. "Team Streak" - as that season's Brewers were called - won the first 13 games of the season. That run included one of the most iconic moments in franchise history, an epic come-from-behind win against the Texas Rangers on Easter Sunday at County Stadium. That was win No. 12, and a dramatic way to earn Milwaukee fans free hamburgers. The next night, the Brewers defeated the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park for their 13th straight win to start a season, which remains tied for the longest such win streak in baseball's modern era.
Three days after the Brewers won their 12th straight in 1987, George Webb restaurants handed out almost 168,194 free hamburgers, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, part of the USA TODAY Network.
How have the Brewers gotten to this point?
Impressively, the Brewers' 11-game win streak includes six wins against the defending World Series champion Dodgers. It opened with a road win against the Miami Marlins on Sunday, July 6, then proceeded with sweeps at home against the Dodgers and Washington Nationals before the All-Star break. The Brewers opened the season's second half with a sweep of the Dodgers in Los Angeles and then won Monday night's series opener against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
With their current streak of victories, the Brewers have leapfrogged the Cubs atop the NL Central and finished play Monday night with the best record in Major League Baseball. Not too shabby for a team just two of six USA TODAY Sports experts predicted would make the playoffs.
Who's pitching for the Brewers on Tuesday night?
Glad you asked.
It's rookie flamethrower Jacob Misiorowski, who was a controversial selection for the All-Star Game after making just five big-league starts. Countering "The Miz" on the mound for the Mariners will be right-hander Logan Gilbert.
The game starts at 9:40 p.m. ET and will be televised by the MLB Network.

Majors-best Brewers sweep Braves, complete 6-0 trip
August 7 - Andrew Vaughn and Blake Perkins hit home runs to support the solid effort of starter Jose Quintana and help the visiting Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Wednesday, completing a three-game sweep. The Brewers, who own the best record in the major leagues (70-44), have won six in a row overall and has won 12 of their past 13 road games. They capped a 6-0 road trip by sweeping a set in Atlanta for the second straight season. The Braves have lost 11 of its past 14 and dropped to a season-worst 19 games below .500. The Brewers recorded 14 hits as Vaughn went 2-for-4 with a solo homer while Perkins finished 3-for-5 with a two-run shot. Isaac Collins went 3-for-4 and hit .500 (10-for-20) on the road trip. Quintana (9-4) pitched six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and no walks. He registered a season-high seven strikeouts. Jared Koenig and Abner Uribe each followed with a scoreless inning. Milwaukee closer Trevor Megill surrendered a two-out homer to Michael Harris II in the ninth before fanning pinch hitter Drake Baldwin to earn his 26th save. Atlanta starter Spencer Strider (5-9) worked only 4 2/3 innings -- his shortest start since May 27 -- and allowed five runs on 11 hits with one walk and six strikeouts. The Braves strung together three consecutive hits in the first inning, including an RBI single from Sean Murphy. The Brewers tied the game in the second with back-to-back two-out doubles by Perkins and Brice Turang. Milwaukee took the lead in the fourth on Vaughn's solo homer, his 12th, which extended his hitting streak to 12 games -- the longest active run in the majors. Milwaukee upped the lead to 5-1 in the fifth on Vaughn's RBI grounder and a two-run homer from Perkins, his third, that knocked Strider out of the game. The Braves got a run back in the fifth on Eli White's RBI grounder, and Atlanta's Jurickson Profar socked a solo homer in the sixth, his fifth. --Field Level Media

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani reaches 1,000 career hits with HR
August 6 - The Los Angeles Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani hit a milestone moment in his major league career on Wednesday afternoon, clubbing a 440-foot home run to center field against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals. The hit was Ohtani's 1,000th hit of his eight-season big-league career and his 39th homer of the season. Ohtani, whose blast pushed Los Angeles to a 2-1 advantage, joined Ichiro Suzuki (3,089) and Hideki Matsui (1,253) as the only Japanese-born players to reach 1,000 hits in MLB action. The two-way star, three-time MVP and five-time All-Star also became the fourth active Dodgers with 1,000 hits alongside Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernandez. Ohtani also started on the mound for Los Angeles on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits while striking out a season-high eight across four innings of work. Behind Jose Quintana, Brewers aim for series sweep vs. Braves
August 6 - Jose Quintana wasn't even sure he was going to be with Milwaukee before the trade deadline expired last week. Now he'll be on the mound Wednesday night when the Brewers try to sweep a three-game series and complete an undefeated road trip. The left-hander (8-4, 3.50 ERA) will start the final game of Milwaukee's three-game series at Atlanta. The Brewers triumphed 7-2 on Tuesday and have won the first five games of their six-game trip. The team leads the season series 3-2 and will try to sweep a three-game series in Atlanta for the second straight season. Milwaukee is a league-best 33-24 away from home and has won six straight games on the road and 11 of the last 12 there. Quintana frequently was mentioned as potential trade bait for the Brewers and said he was happy when the deadline passed and he was still in Milwaukee. "The last day of the deadline was really hard," he said. "The last two hours you don't know what's going to happen, but I wanted to stay. I'm glad to stay here. I want to finish the season here and win." Quintana will make his 17th start of the season and his first against the Braves. In his most recent appearance, against Washington on Friday, he pitched five innings and allowed two runs on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts in a 16-9 win. In 10 career starts against the Braves, Quintana is 3-6 with a 6.62 ERA. He was 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA against them last season and is 1-2 with a 6.89 ERA in three career starts at Truist Park. Atlanta right-hander Spencer Strider (5-8, 3.71 ERA) will make his 15th start and has won two of his last three outings. He beat Kansas City on July 28 after allowing two runs on seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts over five innings in a 10-7 win. He was scheduled to start on Sunday in the Speedway Classic at the Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway but was scratched after the game was postponed by more than two hours because of rain. Strider will make his first career start against the Brewers. He has faced them three times in relief stints and combined for seven scoreless innings with 14 strikeouts. Milwaukee's Andrew Vaughn picked up a two-run single on Tuesday and extended his hitting streak to 11 games, tied for the longest of his career. Vaughn is batting .429 (18-for-42) with four homers and 14 RBIs during the streak. Atlanta's Eli White set a career high with his seventh homer on Tuesday. He has three home runs over the last three games. White got a chance to play a lot early in the season before Ronald Acuna Jr. returned from the injured list. He's batting .254 with 26 RBIs. "Eli's made the most of his opportunities all year," Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. "He's done a really nice job." The Braves placed third baseman Austin Riley on the 10-day injured list with a lower abdominal strain, the same problem that sidelined him from July 12-25. Atlanta recalled Nacho Alvarez Jr. from Triple-A Gwinnett to replace Riley and inserted him in the starting lineup. Alvarez went 1-for-3. -Field Level Media
