Two of Europe's coolest cities will soon be connected by high-speed train

Time Out21-05-2025

Europe has loads of really brilliant cities, but two of the most magnetic, fun, and effortlessly cool have to be Naples and Berlin – and soon, they'll be connected by a direct high-speed train.
Italian operator Trenitalia has reportedly just submitted multiple new international services to the Austrian railway regulator (whose territory would be crossed by them) and a Berlin-Naples high-speed train was included in the proposal.
It would connect the southern Italian city with the German capital via Rome, Florence, Bologna, Verona, Bolzano, Innsbruck, Munich, Nuremberg and Erfurt – that's a pretty exciting route, right?
There's still a bit of a wait before the service is launched – another three years, to be exact, on June 11, 2028. But rail fans needn't fret, as this service is far from the only newcomer on Trenitalia's proposal.
Also on the list were the Rome-Florence-Bologna-Munich and Milan-Munich services, which will both go via Verona and Innsbruck and are set to debut on December 13, 2026.
Then there's the Milan -Berlin high-speed train which will travel via Verona, Innsbruck, Munich and Nuremberg, scheduled to launch on June 13 2027, and a Naples-Munich service that should begin departures from December 12, 2027.
It looks like all the services would run once a day in each direction, using the operator's flagship Frecciarossa 1000 high-speed trains (which seat 450 passengers and offer four different ticket classes).

Chelsea in race to seal TWO transfers and beat FIFA Club World Cup deadline

Chelsea remains in talks to land both Mike Maignan from AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens and want the duo before their Club World Cup campaign Chelsea are hoping to complete TWO transfers ahead of the Club World Cup - one of which is landing a new goalkeeper in Mike Maignan with talks remaining ongoing with AC Milan. The Blues, like several of the club competing in FIFA's new tournament, are looking to get their business done early. Enzo Maresca wants to bring in a new No.1 and they've targeted the Frenchman but are currently well short of Milan's valuation of the player. ‌ They've lodged a new £15million offer which they hope will be enough to sign Maignan, who is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at the San Siro. Chelsea 's initial £10m valuation of the 29-year-old was nowhere near the £25m Milan ideally want. ‌ If a deal can be struck then Maignan will become Chelsea's new first-choice goalkeeper and the player himself has made it known that he wants to move to Stamford Bridge, where several shot stoppers have tried and failed to make the position their own. Chelsea know they are poised to lose one of their goalkeepers with Arsenal closing in on a deal to sign Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga for £5m. The Spaniard is aware that he has no future at Stamford Bridge after several loan spells away - the most recent coming at Bournemouth - and is set for Arsenal in a cut-price deal due to the release clause in his contract. The Blues are also keen and remain in discussions with Borussia Dortmund over Jamie Gittens. The England U21 international could be on the move but the Premier League side know they must do more to tempt the German club after having a £29.5m opening bid rejected - as first reported by the Evening Standard. Gittens, who was once on Chelsea's books as a youngster before leaving to pursue first-team opportunities. Dortmund may ask for as much as £50m for the 20-year-old winger. He is the latest English player to excel at the Bundesliga club after Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham both excelled. Chelsea and Dortmund are both competing at the Club World Cup in the United States and have until Tuesday night's transfer deadline to get a deal done if he is to be playing in blue, rather than yellow, come the tournament. On Monday the west London side confirmed the signing of teenage defender Mamadou Sarr, who joins from sister club Strasbourg for a fee of £12m. Maresca's major summer signing thus far is the £30m capture of Liam Delap, who joined from Ipswich.

Tottenham close on Thomas Frank appointment as Levy makes last ditch pitch

Tottenham are pushing to land Thomas Frank as their next manager with Daniel Levy looking to see if he can reduced the financial package Brentford are demanding Tottenham hope to appoint Thomas Frank as their new boss before the end of the week. Spurs have now made contact with Brentford but have yet to make a formal offer to bring in Frank after sacking Ange Postecoglou last Friday. Frank has a release clause in excess of £10m written into his contract at Brentford and the Dane is believed to be keen on making the switch to become the next Spurs boss. ‌ It is still rare for clubs to pay big 'transfer fees' for managers and Tottenham have already made enquiries and laid the groundwork to bring in Frank. Tottenham boss Daniel Levy may try and negotiate on the fee but there is no reason for Brentford to reduce their demands because they inserted the figure when Frank signed his current five year deal in 2022. ‌ Frank also had a 'gentleman's agreement' to stay at Brentford for another year but that will be wiped out if Spurs do pay the compensation with the 51-year-old ready to make his next career step. Dane Frank took over at Brentford in 2018 and guided them into the Premier League and establishing them as a top-flight club on a small budget. That has made him one of the most sought-after managers in the top flight and he has previously been linked with the likes of Manchester United while several German clubs have also looked at him. Frank has a big staff of coaches and analysts and the compensation figure may rise depending on how many he can take with him to Tottenham. But Tottenham are now moving heavily in the direction of being able to get Frank in the coming days and Brentford are braced for a formal approach. The timing is still uncertain but Tottenham will be keen to get a new manager in place to plan for pre-season, the transfer window and also getting ready for the next Premier League campaign. They sacked Postecoglou even after the Aussie led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with the Europa League which also got them a passport into the Champions League. But Postecoglou's reign came to an end because Tottenham lost 22 games in the Premier League last season and there has also been a big shake-up behind the scenes with chief football officer Scott Munn also likely to go. It is understood that the new manager will have funds to spend after the qualification for the Champions League and Spurs will prioritise midfield as a key area to strengthen. Brentford finished 10th in the Premier League this season, seven places and 18 points above Spurs. That made Frank their No1 target as a manager who is a respected coach, he develops young talent and they moved for him ahead of Fulham 's Marco Silva who was also on their shortlist.

Man Utd's next three transfers after Mbeumo signing as four players set to leave

Manchester United have already splashed the cash in the summer transfer window and are aiming to make Bryan Mbeumo their third signing of the window but are still aiming for more Manchester United still want to make THREE more signings once they get a move for Bryan Mbeumo complete. The Red Devils have made the Brentford forward one of their priority targets for the coming weeks. United have already approached the Bees for a deal but as yet, there is no agreement for the forward to move to Old Trafford. There may be one slight issue given Tottenham have forced themselves into contention, with Brentford boss Thomas Frank closing in on a switch to North London. ‌ But United are still pressing ahead with a move. And once Mbeumo completes a switch, the club will then move onto their other targets. ‌ United are interested in signing a new goalkeeper. Andre Onana has struggled to convince since his arrival from Inter Milan, and Gianuigi Donnarumma has emerged as a contender for a move - according to French reports - with just a year remaining on his contract with current side Paris Saint-Germain. Speaking recently about his future, he said: 'New deal or leaving? We will see what happens… I don't know. It's time to enjoy this magic season now. I will go on holiday and then we will see.' That situation may well not revolve itself until next summer, particularly given United's finances at present means they're unlikely to be able to pay anything like what PSG would want to part ways with the Italian 12 months early. But regardless, a new man between the sticks is likely to still arrive as the club have interest in bringing in a new No.2 as well. At the other end of the pitch, United are also keen to sign a new striker after their goalscoring woes last term. Viktor Gyokeres is a long-term target, while Victor Osimhen could also be an option after rejecting a move to Saudi Arabia. However, there is a slight issue when it comes to a new forward, with Rasmus Hojlund claiming that he is hoping to stay at the club beyond this summer. He said: 'I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United. I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway. ‌ "I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United until 2030. I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season." Who do you think Man United should sign? Share your thoughts in the comments below ‌ Finally, a new midfielder is also on United's shopping list for the remainder of the window. Atalanta star Ederson has been linked in the past and if it's not him then a similar all-action type should arrive. The Red Devils are determined to bid farewell to a few players to bolster their funds. Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho are all expected to leave the club following loan spells away from Old Trafford, with the trio all available for sale if the price is right. United's issue is all three have good contracts that they won't just want to give up. Almost certainly out the door is Alejandro Garnacho, who has been linked with Napoli, and has been told he has no future at the club under Amorim.
