Liam Boyce feeling sharper than ever as Derry City eye top spot in the table
The Northern Ireland international has appeared in all but two of the Candystripes' 14 games so far and, after a difficult start to life at his new club, he is now flourishing.
Regular game time has helped him sharpen his match fitness to the point where his confidence has been rejuvenated.
'We all worked hard pre-season, and I actually said to Tiernan (Lynch) that, after having a few injuries over the past few years, this is probably the best I've felt and the sharpest I've felt on the pitch, and like I could run all day,' he stated.
'He has asked us to give everything we have and if we're tiring, because of the squad we have, someone else will come on and keep the standards at that height. It's good for us and we're all feeling good and we're resting and recovering well and we have a big one again on Friday.'
There are noticeable parallels between Boyce's and Derry's season so far, with the striker and the team struggling to settle in during the first set of games only to bounce back from unexpected lows strongly.
The ex-Cliftonville man was red-carded last month against Drogheda United just 60 seconds after scoring his first goal for the club on his eighth appearance, but he admits he used that low as motivation to bounce back strongly, adding two more goals in his last three games.
'I scored my first goal and I was buzzing, and then I made a stupid decision and we ended up getting beat,' he recalled. 'You blame yourself for the defeat, but I just came back and tried to work harder than I did before.
'You don't want to let your team-mates down, especially when they're working so hard. You want to score goals and win games and create chances.
'That gave me a wee nudge, because that cost us three points basically because we were winning 1-0 and I thought we were comfortable until then so it gave me an extra bit of motivation to come back and try and help the boys.'
Derry could well climb to the top of the Premier Division with a third successive League win at Turner's Cross and Boyce is determined to play his part.
'I think it's that battling for each other and that mentality going into games that has changed,' he added.
'I think we all thought after the Waterford game that that's what we were lacking in that game, so it's been a real emphasis on that and you can see in the last two games we've had two clean sheets against two really good teams, and that's just testament to the fight that we have for each other.'

Liverpool transfer could open door to hand Jack Grealish move joining old rival
Jack Grealish is looking for a way out of Manchester City and Liverpool's pursuit of Florian Wirtz could see Bayer Leverkusen come knocking for the former Aston Villa man - and a somewhat unholy union with ex-Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag Bayer Leverkusen could go after Jack Grealish as they eye a replacement for Florian Wirtz - who is closing in on a British-record move to Liverpool this summer. The German side are in negotiations with the Reds and have rejected several bids, but the Premier League champions have returned with a fresh offer that is closer to Leverkusen's £126million valuation. Leverkusen have already seen Jeremie Frimpong leave for Anfiel d and, if and when Wirtz leaves, it will result in new manager Erik ten Hag having a huge pot to re-invest in his squad. Grealish has been identified as the kind of creative influence who can fill the void left by Wirtz. The 29-year-old has fallen well down the pecking order at Manchester City and there is an acceptance from all parties that a move elsewhere is best. Grealish has been hugely influential in the past and Leverkusen may believe they can get him back to that level. Ten Hag himself is known to be an admirer, reports The Sun, and those close to the player believe he is keen on a move overseas as he looks to revive his career. Tottenham, Newcastle, and former club Aston Villa are all among those who are also reportedly interested in the player, who cost £100million back in 2021. Italian champions Napoli have been linked with the attacking midfielder. City are prepared to take a massive loss on their record signing but are still wanting around £40m before they consider letting him depart. A loan move has also been touted but with Grealish earning £300,000-a-week his salary could prove an issue for any potential suitor. Pep Guardiola has admitted that Grealish needs regular minutes despite using him so sporadically. He said: 'Of course, Jack has to play. He's an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn't happen this season and last season either. He needs to do it, with us or another place. Guardiola also added: 'It's nothing personal with Jack. I'm the person who fought for him to come here and the person who fought for him to stay here this season." Robert Lewandowski accuses manager of "betraying" him as he refuses to play
Robert Lewandowski has lost the captaincy with Poland after sitting out recent games but has been left fuming with the head coach for how he's handled the saga Poland icon Robert Lewandowski claims he was "betrayed" when he lost the armband after claiming he will never play for his country whilst Michał Probierz is the head coach. The Barcelona frontman, who is his country's record goalscorer, has been left fuming by the series of events that saw him stripped of the captaincy as he lamented the manner in which he found out. Lewandowski had copped heavy criticism in the Polish media after making himself unavailable for games against Moldova and Finland this month. He cited "physical and mental tiredness" after a long season with his club as well as and a recent hamstring injury. Lewandowski was replaced by Piotr Zielinski as captain on Sunday, but claimed his situation had been agreed with Probierz. The 36-year-old also questioned how certain information became public and insists he should never have been informed about the changes over the phone. Lewandowski told SportoweFakty: "I got a surprise call from Probierz with the information that he had decided to take away the armband. I was not prepared for it at all, I was putting my children to bed. The conversation lasted a few minutes. "I didn't even have time to tell my family what had happened, because a few moments later it appeared online. I've been wearing the armband for 11 years and playing for the national team for 17. It seemed to me that such matters should be handled differently. "Everything was communicated over the phone. It really shouldn't be like this. The coach betrayed my trust. I've always given everything to the national team, it's always been the most important thing to me, but I'm very hurt by what happened." The ex-Bayern Munich maintained he was not angered by Zielinski replacing him, handing his full backing to the Inter Milan star, but believes the coach didn't back him. "It's not even about the decision regarding the armband, but the way it was communicated to me," he added. "I really don't care about the armband itself. I believe in Zieliński and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him. I have the impression that the coach caved in to the media pressure. He broke agreements we had and that's why I'm surprised by his attitude." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Norwegian boss tells ex-Celtic star to change clubs
It comes after the 27-year-old played just three times for Brentford at the centre of defence last season. Solbakken would like Ajer to turn out in his natural position more regularly, and thus thinks he should leave the Premier League outfit. Read more: The boss spoke after his side's 3-0 win over Italy last Friday evening, in which the ex-Celt completed 90 minutes at centre half. "He can be a very good and stable centre-back, and he was today, but he has to change clubs," said Solbakken [Sport Witness]. "He cannot play right-back in every third game if he is to be a proper, safe and good centre-back. Because he has all the prerequisites. "I think Ajer would have been better suited to playing centre-back in another league. He has had some tough injuries in England. "He will never be a super right-back, at the same level as he is as a centre-back. At the age he is now, I think he is allowed to put his foot down. You can't be a 'cover' right-back at his age now. "Many people get angry with me when I say things like that publicly, but I think we should be a little honest about it. Not that I'm going to interfere with Brentford selling him, but he's at an age and is a type of player who can develop into a very stable, good defender at a high level."
