Soccer superstar Mohamed Salah called out European football's governing body on Saturday for its limited statement after Palestinian footballer Suleiman Al-Obeid was killed in Gaza.
The Egyptian Liverpool forward, the highest-profile Arab player in the game, pointedly noted that the post by UEFA made no reference to the circumstances of Al-Obeid's death.
Al-Obeid, who during his playing days was part of the Palestinian national team, was killed by an Israeli strike targeting civilians waiting for aid in southern Gaza, according to the Palestine Football Association (PFA).
'Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the 'Palestinian Pelé'. A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times,' wrote UEFA in a post on X.
Salah responded to the post on Saturday: 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?' His remark quickly gained traction online, with more than 840,000 likes by Saturday night.
UEFA has not publicly commented further. CNN has contacted the Switzerland-based body for comment.
Later on Saturday, the PFA shared a statement in Arabic that it said was sent from UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, expressing his condolences for Al-Obeid's death.
Al-Obeid showed that 'joy, talent, and pride can blossom despite suffering,' said the statement attributed to Ceferin. 'His talent and dedication of the game gave the children of Gaza and beyond hope in a brighter tomorrow.'
Al-Obeid was born in Gaza City and was 41 years old when he was killed, according to the PFA. He had scored more than 100 goals throughout his long career, it said.
Salah, a four-time Premier League top-goalscorer, is one of the highest-profile footballers to speak out against the war in Gaza. He has previously called for humanitarian aid to be allowed into the enclave 'immediately,' for world leaders to help end the fighting, and for the 'massacres' to stop.
According to the PFA, 325 members of its football community have been killed since the war began on October 7, 2023 – including players, managers, referees, coaches and other staff.
The United Nations says more than 1,300 people have been killed by Israeli forces while seeking food since late May, when a controversial new Israel- and US-backed aid group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, began operating. Of those, more than 800 have been killed near GHF sites, according to the UN.
Currently 75% of all United Nations members recognize a sovereign Palestinian state, with more countries - including Britain, France and Canada - recently announcing plans to do the same. At the UN, Palestine is currently a non-member observer state of the UN General Assembly as the United States has consistently blocked full UN membership.
As a football team though, Palestine has been recognized by the sport's world governing body FIFA since 1998. They have played in the last three Asian Cup tournaments, but have yet to qualify for the World Cup.

Moses Itauma: Ben Davison's planning helped me fall back in love with boxing

British heavyweight boxing sensational Moses Itauma has revealed meticulous research by trainer Ben Davison helped set him on the path to fall back in love with the sport. Itauma, 20, is widely regarded as the most exciting prospect in the blue-riband division and faces his toughest test to date on Saturday when he takes on compatriot Dillian Whyte (31-3, 21KOs) in Riyadh. It will be the 13th fight of Itauma's (12-0, 10KOs) fledgling career and only his fifth under Davison, but the Chatham southpaw recently detailed how he started to 'hate' boxing barely a year after he turned professional at the start of 2023. 'Being in the ring (sparring) with all these heavyweights Daniel Dubois, Joe Joyce, Tyson Fury, Lawrence Okolie, I know that there are levels to boxing and I just felt like I was unable to learn any more,' Itauma revealed. 'I don't want to disrespect any of the coaches I tried or did work with. I love and respect them, but with Ben, he taught me a different side to boxing. 'He taught me there is more to boxing than punch, punch, get punched, punch back, punch, punch, punch. There is actually a whole chess game to this.' Itauma split from old trainer Alan Smith in March, 2024 after a first-round knockout victory over Dan Garber in his eighth professional bout and eventually decided to join Davison's stacked Essex stable after trials elsewhere. Davison, who has worked with Fury and more recently Anthony Joshua, is now a key figure in the team of a boxer widely tipped as a soon-to-be world heavyweight champion, but the Slovakian-born fighter may have considered his future in the sport if he had not listened to older brother Karol Itauma (13-1, 8KOs). 'What I mean with falling out of love with boxing is, it was kind of like I felt like I reached a barrier and I was unable to break it,' Itauma added. 'That is why I went around searching for a new trainer to get something new. 'I tried out a lot of coaches and Ben Davison was actually the last one I tried. If I'll be honest, when I went to Ben, I was like he has too many stars in the gym, he won't really have time for me, he won't give me time I need but my brother was like there is no harm in trying Ben Davison. 'And I went there and as I walked through the doors, there is a glass window on the door where you can see inside the gym and Ben has got all my fights up. 'He is writing in his notepad and he was like, 'you do this, I don't know if you're aware of it, now we need to make you aware of this and do this, this and this,' and I was like, 'rah, none of the other coaches did that,'. 'And it was only when I started sparring, he would say, 'if I do this, he will do this and you can capitalise,' and I would go and do it, it would pay off and I'd be like what! 'Obviously we just clicked from there but the most impressive thing is how you have so many stars in the gym but each individual fighter gets the necessary time.'

Ben Johnson wants Bears to remain physical without fighting

There has been plenty of physical play within the Chicago Bears throughout the early portion of training camp, especially this past Tuesday when several skirmishes broke out between the offense and defense. While the intensity and excitement around the practice was celebrated, head coach Ben Johnson wasn't thrilled about the fighting that took place, but hopes there's a valuable lesson for the regular season. Speaking to the media ahead of the team's joint practice against the Miami Dolphins on Friday, Johnson said the intensity the team showed will be the norm, and as long as they cut out the fighting, that's what others should expect from the team. Physical play and intensity were two traits clearly missing from the team last season, but Johnson is hoping to change the team's demeanor and image for this upcoming season, his first year with the team. "Take the skirmishes out of the play, that's what we're going to be about," Johnson said. As much as Johnson would like to keep the fighting to a minimum, that wasn't the case for their first interactions with Miami, as multiple fights broke out in the first joint practice that included Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel breaking one up. The Bears are clearly trying to change their image from last year and put together a much more physical and intense team overall, especially on defense. If they can become disciplined before the start of the regular season, Chicago will be a fun watch throughout the year. Ex-Rangers trialist scores for Arsenal academy vs Monaco

The Arsenal u21s secured an away win over Monaco to end their pre-season preparations, with a former Rangers trialist getting on the scoresheet. Photo via The Arsenal u21s have had a difficult pre-season so far, partly thanks to the absence of some talented youngsters like Max Dowman, Marli Salmon, Josh Nichols, Ismeal Kabia, and Andre Harriman-Annous due to first-team call-ups. Up until this weekend, the young Gunners had drawn one and lost four of their pre-season games, only scoring five goals across the five games. But the team was much closer to full strength away to AS Monaco II on Saturday, with Tommy Setford in goal, Nichols and Salmon in defence, and Kabia and Harriman-Annous in the front three. None of the five had featured in the previous game against Chelmsford City. Photo byArsenal clearly benefitted from the changes, with Kabia giving the team the lead in the 40th minute, and Setford maintaining a clean sheet at the other end. But it was actually a trialist who secured the victory by doubling Arsenal's advantage late on. Free agent former Rangers winger Archie Stevens was making his second trial appearance for the Gunners, and in the 93rd minute he found space in the box before slotting home for 2-0. Stevens has played senior football before, making one appearance for Rangers and playing 11 times on loan with Scottish second tier club Dunfermline Athletic in 2024/25. It looks like he could now get the chance to play for the Arsenal academy on a more permanent basis, if he keeps impressing. Photo byThe Arsenal u21s recently learned their Premier League 2 fixtures list for the coming campaign, kicking things off with a game against Fulham at home on Friday, August 15th. The team will also play Nottingham Forest away and Brighton at home later this month. The first big derby game is away to Chelsea on October 25th, but there will be no regular season north London derby this season. Photo via Dowman on Instagram The current Premier League 2 format involves 29 teams playing a 20-game regular season, so you don't face eight teams until the play-offs, if at all. This year, Arsenal won't face Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Stoke City, or Spurs in the regular season. But they could still meet some of the above in the play-offs or in other competitions. As for who might be in charge of the team when the competitive campaign gets underway, that much is still unclear. Jack Wilshere is reportedly in the running to return to the club as their u21 manager, but Max Porter and Ken Gillard have taken joint charge of the team on an interim basis for now.
