BLOEMFONTEIN - Friends, family, and members of the police service have gathered at the St Rose Catholic Church in Bloemfontein on Friday morning for the funeral service of constable Cebekhulu Linda who died in a horrific crash at the Hennops River in Centurion.
Boipelo Senoge and Keamogetswe buys were with Linda in the car when it veered off the N1 highway plunging into the river.

A nationwide search ended last week when their bodies and their white VW Polo were recovered from the water.
Police top brass are also in attendance at today's funeral, including deputy police minister Polly Boshielo and national crime detection deputy Shadrack Sibiya.
Still in disbelief about the loss of a young and promising life, the Linda family has put on a brave face as they prepare to bid Cebekhulu goodbye.
Born on 22 April 2001, his family and friends say he lived a life of service and dedication.
He died just two days after celebrating his 24th birthday, when he was deployed to Limpopo as part of Operation Vala Umgodi, set up to tackle illegal mine in hotspot areas.
Their sudden disappearance en toute sparked public speculation, much of which has been dismissed by authorities, who ruled the incident an accident.
A full scene reconstruction to determine the exact circumstances of the accident is yet to be completed.
Senogoe was buried in the Free State on Thursday, while Keamogetswe buys will be laid to rest on Saturday.

Mpumalanga teenager charged with perjury after faking rape

A 16-year-old girl has been charged with perjury after her claim about being raped proved to be fabricated. During the police investigation it was established no rape had occurred. 'The girl eventually confessed she had visited a male friend and, fearing her parents' reaction, chose to lie about being raped,' said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane. In her original report, the teenager alleged she was hitchhiking from Dullstroom (Emnothweni) to Lydenburg (Mashishing) when a black VW Polo with two male occupants speaking English offered her a lift. She claimed after passing Coromandel, the driver diverted into a secluded area, where she was rendered unconscious by a cloth with a chemical smell. On regaining consciousness, she claimed the passenger was raping her. He offered her money, which she refused. 'The claims have since been proven false by the investigating officers.'

Mpumalanga teen girl charged for lying about rape ordeal

The girl fabricated the story to conceal her visit to a male friend. On Wednesday, Mpumalanga police were sent on a manhunt for two men who were driving a black VW Polo from Dullstroom to Lydenburg on Sunday on allegations of rape. However, this turned out to be a smokescreen. According to Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, a 16-year-old girl reported to police that she was hitchhiking on Sunday and got raped after being given a lift by strangers. 'According to the report, the female victim was from Dullstroom, heading to Lydenburg, when a black VW Polo with two male occupants stopped and offered her a lift. She then accepted the offer,' said Mdhluli on Wednesday. The passenger allegedly covered her mouth with a cloth emitting a chemical smell, causing her to lose consciousness. Upon regaining consciousness, she realised the passenger was busy raping her.' A case docket was opened and assigned to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for investigation. At the time, acting police provincial commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, promised the public that the members assigned to investigate would hunt down the suspects until they were brought to justice. 'She lied' However, there was no rape case to investigate and consequently, no suspects to arrest because this was a fabricated story. Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said on Friday that the 16-year-old girl had been charged with perjury after investigations revealed that she fabricated the entire story. However, during the course of their investigation, it was established that no rape had occurred. The girl eventually confessed that she had visited a male friend and, fearing her parents' reaction, chose to lie about being raped,' said Ndubane. Mkhwanazi expressed deep disappointment at the false report and issued a stern warning to the public about the seriousness of making false statements to the police. 'We will not show mercy to individuals who open false cases. The crime statistics for the last quarter of 2024/2025 indicate an increase in sexual offences. It is therefore extremely concerning and disheartening when people abuse the system by reporting fake cases. These actions waste police resources and undermine our efforts to fight gender-based violence, which we treat as a top priority. Most incidents occurred in the residences of either the perpetrator or the victim, with 362 cases recorded, followed by public places, with 161 cases. Crime expert warns against hitchhiking after a 16-year-old girl was violated in a VW Polo

Forensic crime expert and University of Johannesburg research associate, Calvin Rafadi, spoke to IOL on the dangers of hitchhiking in South Africa after a 16-year-old girl from Mpumalanga was brutally raped by people in VW Polo. Image: Nqobile Mbonambi/Independent Media Seasoned forensic crime expert and University of Johannesburg research associate, Calvin Rafadi, has condemned the incident where a 16-year-old girl from Mpumalanga was brutally raped after she was picked by a vehicle on the road where she was hitchhiking. Earlier on Thursday, IOL, quoting Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, reported that the teenager was given a lift by strangers. The incident is said to have occurred in Lydenburg on Sunday, at approximately 4pm. Rafadi told IOL that at times, criminals go around looking for people who are hitchhiking, and give them lifts. "One of the dangerous issues about hitchhiking is that women and girls get sexually assaulted. The hitchhiking spots are places where some of the perpetrators spot their victims, they just drive around and identify these hotspots where people gather to hitchhike. They pick women and girls, and rape them. In some instances, they pick different people and abuse them," said Rafadi. He said hitchhiking in groups has not deterred the criminals because there has been instances where groups of people were attacked in vehicles. Video Player is loading. "Even if you do not have money, they will force you to start borrowing money from your contacts, your family and friends. The criminals also get into your banking details while holding you under duress," said Rafadi. He said picking up hitchhikers also presents dangers for motorists who can be attacked by the passengers. Earlier, police in Mpumalanga said teenage girl was offered a lift by two men travelling in Volkswagen Polo. 'According to the (police) report, the female victim was from Dullstroom, heading to Lydenburg when a black Volkswagen Polo, with two male occupants, stopped and offered her a lift. Alternatively, people with vital information may share the details by calling the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send details via the My SAPS App. 'All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,' said Mdhluli. Meanwhile, acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has given assurance that the perpetrators will be hunted down and brought to book. In 2023, Limpopo provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, cautioned community members against hitch-hiking, and giving lifts to hitch-hikers, following different criminal activities recorded in the province. In the first incident, a 55-year-old man who was hitch-hiking was given a lift in a Suzuki Swift vehicle near the Mall of the North in Polokwane. The 55-year-old man was travelling to Ga-Dikgale. 'It is alleged that three unknown suspects (the occupants of the car) took the wrong direction, stopped, produced pistols and a knife, and robbed him of all his belongings such as a cellphone, wallet with cash worth R400, and bank cards, all valued at R5,400 and ordered him to run into the bushes,' provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said at the time. The robbers then drove off with the man's possessions.
