Crime expert warns against hitchhiking after a 16-year-old girl was violated in a VW Polo
Forensic crime expert and University of Johannesburg research associate, Calvin Rafadi, spoke to IOL on the dangers of hitchhiking in South Africa after a 16-year-old girl from Mpumalanga was brutally raped by people in VW Polo.

Seasoned forensic crime expert and University of Johannesburg research associate, Calvin Rafadi, has condemned the incident where a 16-year-old girl from Mpumalanga was brutally raped after she was picked by a vehicle on the road where she was hitchhiking.
Earlier on Thursday, IOL, quoting Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, reported that the teenager was given a lift by strangers.
The incident is said to have occurred in Lydenburg on Sunday, at approximately 4pm.
Rafadi told IOL that at times, criminals go around looking for people who are hitchhiking, and give them lifts.
"One of the dangerous issues about hitchhiking is that women and girls get sexually assaulted. The hitchhiking spots are places where some of the perpetrators spot their victims, they just drive around and identify these hotspots where people gather to hitchhike. They pick women and girls, and rape them. In some instances, they pick different people and abuse them," said Rafadi.
He said hitchhiking in groups has not deterred the criminals because there has been instances where groups of people were attacked in vehicles.

Rafadi added that men are also not safe, as the criminals using vehicles also seek to rob their victims.
"Even if you do not have money, they will force you to start borrowing money from your contacts, your family and friends. The criminals also get into your banking details while holding you under duress," said Rafadi.
He said picking up hitchhikers also presents dangers for motorists who can be attacked by the passengers.
Earlier, police in Mpumalanga said teenage girl was offered a lift by two men travelling in Volkswagen Polo.
'According to the (police) report, the female victim was from Dullstroom, heading to Lydenburg when a black Volkswagen Polo, with two male occupants, stopped and offered her a lift. She then accepted the offer,' said Brigadier Mdhluli.
After passing Coromandel, the driver of the VW Polo diverted the vehicle into a secluded area.
'The passenger allegedly covered her mouth with a cloth that emitted a chemical smell, causing her to lose consciousness. Upon regaining consciousness, she realised the passenger was busy raping her,' said Mdhluli. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel.
A case docket was opened and assigned to the family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit for investigation.
The perpetrators are still at large, and police are appealing to members of the public who may have information that may assist in locating and apprehending the suspects to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Gabsile Mlangeni on 078 751 3463.
Alternatively, people with vital information may share the details by calling the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send details via the My SAPS App.
'All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,' said Mdhluli.
Meanwhile, acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has given assurance that the perpetrators will be hunted down and brought to book.
In 2023, Limpopo provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, cautioned community members against hitch-hiking, and giving lifts to hitch-hikers, following different criminal activities recorded in the province.
In the first incident, a 55-year-old man who was hitch-hiking was given a lift in a Suzuki Swift vehicle near the Mall of the North in Polokwane. The 55-year-old man was travelling to Ga-Dikgale.
'It is alleged that three unknown suspects (the occupants of the car) took the wrong direction, stopped, produced pistols and a knife, and robbed him of all his belongings such as a cellphone, wallet with cash worth R400, and bank cards, all valued at R5,400 and ordered him to run into the bushes,' provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said at the time.
The robbers then drove off with the man's possessions.

Major-General Bongani Maqashalala, deputy police commissioner for the detection division, confirmed that two gunmen had stormed a Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) office, killing four men and injuring three others. 'Codeta has a permit to operate in Somerset West but does not have a taxi rank there. We believe this is causing tension with the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata),' he said. The situation is being monitored by the Department of Mobility. The police have announced a reward of R100,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Codeta chairperson Nceba Enge explained that the association had previously written to the MEC of Mobility on August 29, 2024, notifying them of partial services on the M18 route, as Cata operators had prohibited their return with passengers. 'Despite a notice issued on June 3, 2025, to resume operations, upon doing so, Cata operators blocked legal operations, leading to a meeting scheduled for next week. Unfortunately, the dispute escalated into violence, resulting in this tragic loss of life.' Codeta has called on the Western Cape government to strengthen the regulatory framework to protect both taxi operators and commuters. Maqashalala also urged taxi association members to remain calm. 'We request their cooperation, and we are scheduled to meet with the Department of Mobility. The urgent need for whistle-blower protection in South Africa

These were the sentiments echoed on Friday during a discussion over the strengthening of whistle-blower protection by enacting robust laws that guarantee anonymity, job security, and legal support for individuals who report corruption. Deokaran was the acting chief financial officer at the department and reported on financial fraud and corruption at Tembisa Hospital when she was killed outside her home in August 2021. The Whistle-blower Protection Bill is due to be introduced to Parliament later this year. The Bill follows a recommendation by the State Capture Commission, contained in its report released in 2022, that whistle-blower legislation be amended to provide increased protection. "These examples clearly demonstrate a significant lack of legal, financial, and psychological support for those who expose corruption in government and elsewhere. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development's draft document outlining proposed reforms for whistle-blower protection, published in June 2023, has still not been finalised, despite President Cyril Ramaphosa's undertaking to do so in his State of the Nation Address at the beginning of the year," he said. Van Staden believed that South Africa does not have the experience, expertise, intelligence capabilities, and manpower needed to enforce laws. "The significant shortcomings in, among other things, crime intelligence are evident in ordinary criminal cases, which often end in unsuccessful prosecutions," he added. Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach, an MP and member of the DA, said the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has failed to secure a single successful prosecution of a politically connected figure implicated in state capture. Breytenbach said that cases like the Vrede Dairy scandal, the Zizi Kodwa debacle, and the Transnet corruption trial have all collapsed due to incompetence, poor preparation, or basic procedural errors. Corruption has reached epidemic proportions, said EFF MP Thapelo Mogale, adding that President Cyril Ramaphosa himself was involved in the Phala Phala saga where the theft of $4m from his game farm became international news. The stigma of being labelled an impimpi, which refers to a police informer or spy in South Africa, should also be addressed and dismantled in communities, said Thokozani Langa, an IFP MP. Langa added that whistle-blowers should be heroes and not seen as traitors. Marlon Daniels, a Patriotic Alliance MP, said that robust laws should guarantee legal defence for whistle-blowers who face frivolous lawsuits after reporting corruption. Image: Henk Kruger / Independent Media Police have offered a R100 000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest of the gunmen behind a deadly shooting at the Mfuleni taxi rank on Friday morning that left four people dead and three others injured, including a commuter. Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa say the incident took place around 6am at the old taxi rank when two unknown gunmen opened fire, striking seven people before fleeing the scene. 'Of the seven victims, one injured is believed to be a commuter,' said Potelwa. The Western Cape Taxi Violence Unit has since launched a full investigation and is pursuing several leads. Mandla Hermanus, chairperson of South African Taxi Council, SANTACO Western Cape, said the industry was 'deeply disturbed' by the violence and called on law enforcement to act swiftly. 'We condemn this brutal and criminal act in the strongest possible terms. There can be no tolerance for violence in our industry or communities,' said Hermanus. 'We urge all operators to remain calm and exercise maximum restraint. Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku expressed sorrow and outrage at the shooting, warning against complacency in the face of growing violence at public transport hubs. The Western Cape Government reiterated its commitment to commuter safety, stating that violence in and around transport hubs not only endangers lives but undermines efforts to ensure safe and reliable mobility for all residents. 'Disputes must never be resolved through violence. There is no justification for actions that place innocent lives at risk and disrupt critical transport services,' said the Western Cape mobility department spokesperson, Muneera Allie.
