Crime expert warns against hitchhiking after a 16-year-old girl was violated in a VW Polo

Seasoned forensic crime expert and University of Johannesburg research associate, Calvin Rafadi, has condemned the incident where a 16-year-old girl from Mpumalanga was brutally raped after she was picked by a vehicle on the road where she was hitchhiking.
Earlier on Thursday, IOL, quoting Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, reported that the teenager was given a lift by strangers.
The incident is said to have occurred in Lydenburg on Sunday, at approximately 4pm.
Rafadi told IOL that at times, criminals go around looking for people who are hitchhiking, and give them lifts.
"One of the dangerous issues about hitchhiking is that women and girls get sexually assaulted. The hitchhiking spots are places where some of the perpetrators spot their victims, they just drive around and identify these hotspots where people gather to hitchhike. They pick women and girls, and rape them. In some instances, they pick different people and abuse them," said Rafadi.
He said hitchhiking in groups has not deterred the criminals because there has been instances where groups of people were attacked in vehicles.

Rafadi added that men are also not safe, as the criminals using vehicles also seek to rob their victims.
"Even if you do not have money, they will force you to start borrowing money from your contacts, your family and friends. The criminals also get into your banking details while holding you under duress," said Rafadi.
He said picking up hitchhikers also presents dangers for motorists who can be attacked by the passengers.
Earlier, police in Mpumalanga said teenage girl was offered a lift by two men travelling in Volkswagen Polo.
'According to the (police) report, the female victim was from Dullstroom, heading to Lydenburg when a black Volkswagen Polo, with two male occupants, stopped and offered her a lift. She then accepted the offer,' said Brigadier Mdhluli.
After passing Coromandel, the driver of the VW Polo diverted the vehicle into a secluded area.
'The passenger allegedly covered her mouth with a cloth that emitted a chemical smell, causing her to lose consciousness. Upon regaining consciousness, she realised the passenger was busy raping her,' said Mdhluli. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel.
A case docket was opened and assigned to the family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit for investigation.
The perpetrators are still at large, and police are appealing to members of the public who may have information that may assist in locating and apprehending the suspects to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Gabsile Mlangeni on 078 751 3463.
Alternatively, people with vital information may share the details by calling the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send details via the My SAPS App.
'All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,' said Mdhluli.
Meanwhile, acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has given assurance that the perpetrators will be hunted down and brought to book.
In 2023, Limpopo provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, cautioned community members against hitch-hiking, and giving lifts to hitch-hikers, following different criminal activities recorded in the province.
In the first incident, a 55-year-old man who was hitch-hiking was given a lift in a Suzuki Swift vehicle near the Mall of the North in Polokwane. The 55-year-old man was travelling to Ga-Dikgale.
'It is alleged that three unknown suspects (the occupants of the car) took the wrong direction, stopped, produced pistols and a knife, and robbed him of all his belongings such as a cellphone, wallet with cash worth R400, and bank cards, all valued at R5,400 and ordered him to run into the bushes,' provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said at the time.
The robbers then drove off with the man's possessions.

'We do identify the hotspots, and if you look at some annual statistics, more than 40,000 cellphones have been confiscated,' Groenewald said. He said that they are cleaning their facilities because the more contraband they can get rid of, the more proof they have that they are doing their job well. 'So we will continue with that, we will even increase the raids, and the people must understand that it is prohibited, and we will act accordingly,' Groenewald said. On overcrowding, Groenewald said they have admitted it is a huge problem. In Parliament, he has responded several times. They also account to the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services in Parliament. 'Our main problem is actually when it comes to remand detainees. We have people in our facility who are awaiting trial for more than 10 years. There are six of them. Now that is part of the criminal justice system. There are ways, in terms of legislation, where we can request and go back to court, but it's not very successful,' Groenewald said. He also said they have about 3,000 remand detainees who could not afford the bail of R1,000 or less. 'There's a process trying to establish a bail fund where we can try to do that,' Groenewald said. Additionally, about 26,000 foreigners are in correctional facilities. Approximately 13,000 are remand detainees.

Justice still eludes Marikana victims 13 years after the tragedy

Image: Leon Sadiki Thirteen years after the Marikana tragedy, which resulted in the death of 34 miners in the mining village of Marikana in the North West Province, the victims and their widows are said to be still searching for justice for the slain miners. This past Saturday marked 13 years since police gunned down 34 striking workers, while at least 10 people, including police and security officers, were killed in the weeks leading up to the bloodshed. Scores of residents, including families of the victims and other prominent figures, gathered at the Marikana Koppie with Advocate Dali Mpofu, accusing the government of moving at a snail's pace in compensating the victims of their tragedy and their families. Mpofu, who represented the miners, also indicated that the government has so far paid more than R300 million in the legal battle after the families of the deceased, along with widows of the slain miners, approached both the Pretoria High Court and the Constitutional Court to seek compensation. "The government has been moving at a snail's pace to try and assuage all the damage that happened here. Two cases are left now. It is the case of Constitutional damages in respect of the widows as well as the case against the then director of Lonmin, Cyril Ramaphosa, who sent the message from here to the bosses, saying the workers are criminals," Mpofu said. "We have campaigned for the current sitting President to apologise to the widows, the workers, and the working class in general since he made those commitments 8 years ago. However, even today, he has not made any effort to do that," he added.

‘Government should hang their heads in shame': Marikana Massacre marks 13 years without justice
Government has paid more than R350 million in claims linked to the tragedy. Saturday, 16 August 2025, marked 13 years since 34 mineworkers were gunned down by police in what is now remembered as the Marikana massacre. The incident took place at the Lonmin platinum mine (now Sibanye-Stillwater) in North West, during a wage protest in 2012. Ten people were also killed in the days leading up to the Marikana massacre between 12 and 16 August. Meanwhile, government has paid more than R350 million in claims linked to the tragedy. Marikana Massacre remembered On Saturday, various organisations honoured the victims and renewed calls for accountability. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) stressed that the slain miners were not criminals, but workers demanding fair wages. 'They were fathers, brothers, and sons, demanding a living wage in the face of exploitation, degradation, and hunger. 'Instead of dialogue and dignity, they were met with the barrels of guns in full view of the world,' the EFF said in a statement. 'It is not surprising then that the ANC has refused to bring justice to the families of the Marikana victims. 'There have been no prosecutions, no reparations, and no structural change to the mining sector that continues to enrich a few at the expense of the many. 'The workers of Marikana died in vain because their demands remain unmet, their killers remain unpunished, and the system that murdered them remains firmly in place.' This slaughter of hard-working men happened under their watch, under their command. 'These workers are not just numbers – they had names, families, and identities. Yet we are still calling for justice thirteen years later. That is a disgrace,' he said. 'They would not even recognise it as a massacre. They want us to forget, but we will never forget.' AMCU added that, through the Marikana Massacre Trust Fund, it has built houses for the families of 34 victims. Mathunjwa said the day was more than just about remembrance, but a warning. 'That was the day the state showed its true face,' he added. Silence on NPA appeal Furthermore, the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (Seri) emphasised that true justice could only come through successful prosecutions. 'The state continues to fail the families of the deceased and the survivors of the massacre,' the NGO said. While the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has prosecuted nine police officers, Seri highlighted that that two trials ended in acquittals. 'In 2023, the NPA issued a statement detailing various personnel and resource constraints as reasons for their failure to prosecute the Marikana case. 'This inaction reflects a lack of commitment to ensuring the families obtain justice for the deaths of their loved ones.' Seri added that several family members of the victims had died without ever seeing accountability. Marikana Massacre a 'premeditated act of state violence' The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) declared that the Marikana massacre was not a tragic accident, but 'a premeditated act of state violence in defence of capital'. The federation said the state has ignored or failed to implement the commission's recommendations adequately. 'The state's refusal to fully implement these recommendations confirms Saftu's reluctance to participate in any so-called national dialogue.
