X reports second big outage as Musk leaves DOGE with a black eye and nearly Rs 150 lakh crore savings

Just as Elon Musk was signing off from his brief stint in the US government, users of his platform, X (formerly Twitter), were struggling to sign in. According to Downdetector, a service that monitors real-time outages, tens of thousands of users reported problems accessing the app on Friday afternoon in the US. It is noteworthy that X suffered a similar outage in India a few days ago as well. advertisementAt the height of the disruption, around 4.19 PM ET (1.30 AM IST), more than 34,000 users flagged issues, most of them related to the mobile app. Another 38 per cent cited problems with the web interface, and a small number faced server connectivity issues. A few users even encountered a strange greeting message reading, 'Welcome to X!', as though they were logging in for the very first time. Within half an hour, the number of reported outages had dropped to around 1,500, but the X Developer Platform status page confirmed a 'site-wide outage', cautioning developers about widespread 503 errors. The platform warned, 'You may experience 503 errors for the following endpoints: Get User Timeline / Get Tweets / Get DM / Create Tweet.'advertisement All of this digital drama unfolded just as Elon Musk was making his exit from the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump administration task force aimed at trimming federal spending. Musk, who had taken on the role of a Special Government Employee for a limited term, confirmed his departure on X.'As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,' Musk posted. He added, 'The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.'While Musk has officially stepped down, a senior administration official told CNN he may still be involved as an "unofficial advisor" and could appear in future White House meetings. And just to keep things interesting, Musk said he will now lead an "austerity team" tasked with hunting down fraud and waste in the federal his time with DOGE, Musk says he helped the government save a massive $175 billion (around Rs 150 lakh crore) by cutting wasteful spending. This included cancelling contracts, selling unused assets, and stopping incorrect payments. According to the DOGE website, that adds up to about $1,086.96 (around Rs 93,000) in savings for every US of the biggest changes happened at USAID, the agency that handles foreign aid. After a six-week review, DOGE shut down 83 per cent of its programmes and cancelled over 5,000 contracts. Grok has thoughts (Of course it does)No Musk milestone would be complete without a cheeky comment from Grok — the AI chatbot developed by his company, xAI. When prompted by an X user to summarise Musk's time with DOGE, Grok delivered a rather detailed performance review.'As a Special Government Employee, Elon Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), claiming $160 billion (Rs 136 lakh crore) in savings by terminating wasteful contracts, like $255 million (Rs 2,181 crore) from 269 contracts, and modernising IT systems, such as digitising the OPM retirement process,' Grok added that DOGE also helped clean up Social Security records and backed voter integrity measures. But not without controversy. Grok noted that critics argue these changes could cost the government $135 billion (Rs 115 lah crore) in lost productivity, lawsuits, and service hiccups. Public opinion remains divided: 'Concerns about Musk's business conflicts and political motivations persist, with public opinion divided, as 54 per cent view him unfavourably.' In its trademark tone, Grok wrapped things up by saying, 'The true impact of DOGE remains debated amid ongoing scrutiny.'So, in a single week, X faced a platform-wide outage and its owner stepped away from federal service while his AI offered a somewhat smug summary of his public-sector performance. Whether you're into politics, tech, or the chaos where the two meet, it's clear that Musk's influence isn't going offline any time soon — even if his app occasionally does. Tune In
