726 cases disposed of by PLA; month long campaign to be held
In order to sensitise the public on the merits of Permanent Lok Adalat (PLA) courts which facilitated speedy disposal of cases, a month long awareness campaign has been launched, during which programmes will be held at five places in each taluk of the district. Addressing presspersons in Dharwad on Friday, Chairman of PLA, Dharwad, judge Nagarajappa Kuradakar said that the 30-day campaign would be organised jointly by the judiciary and the District Legal Services Authority. Judge Kuradakar said that earlier, sitting sessions judges were given additional responsibility of handling the cases and disposing them of. As the judges sat in the court only once in a week to hear the cases and they continued to pile up, a permanent judge was appointed to these courts, he said. The Dharwad PLA has its jurisdiction over seven districts namely Ballari, Koppal, Davangere, Dharwad, Gadag, Uttara Kananda, and Haveri and cases related to pulbic utility services could be filed in the court afresh. The judge said that in the last one year, the court had disposed of 726 cases and 479 cases were pending and the verdict delivered in the PLA through conciliation could not be challenged in any other civil court. 'Another advantage of PLA is that no court fee is charged on the petitioner and the cases are solved amicably. The PLA courts are also not bound by CPC (Civil Proceedure Code) and Evidence Act. Cases with discrepancies in public utility services up to ₹ 1 crore compensation can be filed in this court,' he said. National Lok Adalat DLSA Member-Secretary and senior civil judge P.F. Doddamani said that National Lok Adalat would be held in Dharwad district on September 13. Different litigations including the civil cases, criminal cases, Motor Vehicle accidents, family disputes, labour compensation and others which could be resolved through mediation would be heard during the Lok Adalat, he said.
