Two stroke survivors taking on 24-hour three peaks challenge
Two East Lancashire men, who have both suffered strokes, have made the 'bonkers' decision to take on the Three Peaks challenge after a brief conversation over dinner.
Andrew Wilson, from Clayton-le-Moors and Paul Wood, from Blackburn, have set themselves the task of climbing all three of Great Britain's tallest mountains in less than 24 hours to help fund a local cadet group.
They aim to raise £2,000 for Accrington Air Cadets to help fund a trip to Poland for the young people who use the service.
Andrew said: 'The youth deserve to have a trip that is going to teach them about why we don't forget the atrocities of the past, because if we don't remember it, it will be impossible to sort our future out.
'They said they would all like to go to Auschwitz and pay their respects.'
Having volunteered at the youth group for 12 months, Andrew was inspired by the work that was done there and the major benefits it had for young people in the community.
During the mammoth challenge, the pair are planning to drive themselves and expect to only have a 10-minute break to stretch on their route as they ascend Scotland's Ben Nevis, England's Scafell Pike, and Wales' Mount Snowdon.
Andrew added: 'We have done no training. We are typically blokes from the North West of England, thinking, ah, we can do that.
"We are doing our first training sessions next weekend and starting at Pendle Hill.
'Most people go with the Three Peaks challenge, and then they do all the driving.
"Because we don't want to take away from the cadets, we are not doing it that way, we are driving ourselves.'

Andrew has suffered two transient ischemic attacks, often referred to as a 'mini stroke', whilst Paul has suffered one.
All funds raised will be used to reduce the cost of the trip, with some young people in the cadets unable to cover the £900 cost for the trip.
The pair will be live-streaming the event on the Accrington Cadets' Facebook page and regularly updating people in WhatsApp groups.
Donations can be made to the group's GoFundMe page or dropped off at the air cadets' base in Harvey Street, Oswaldtwistle, between 7.30 and 9.30pm on Tuesdays.

Nurse accidentally drags baby girl from hospital crib, killing her, OH mom says
On March 4, Ellieana J. Peyton was born at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Just 27 days later, she died after suffering a head injury from a fall at the hospital, according to the Franklin County Coroner's report. After she was born, Ellieana was placed in the NICU due to a cardiovascular disease called Cardiomyopathy, according to a GoFundMe page. Her mother Mackenzie Marshall said in a March 12 Facebook post that Ellieana had a heart surgery and everything went 'amazing.' 'Her numbers looked great, everything went great,' she said in the post. 'I'm so happy. Crying happy tears.' Then, on March 25, Marshall took to Facebook again, this time sharing that Ellieana had been injured at the hospital. 'The hospital nurse put the cords hooked to my daughter in her pocket and forgot she had the cords in her pocket and dragged my daughter out of bed when she went she said in the post. Marshall and Ellieana's dad went home to shower when they got the call that their baby was 'dropped,' the GoFundMe page said. 'She already had a 20 percent chance of life and this hospital wants to be so careless and be so dumb with a NEWBORN BABY. my baby has a fractured skull bleeding in her (expletive) head,' Marshall wrote March 26 on Facebook. 'I left for (an) hour to come take a shower and get the worst phone call no parent should ever receive when (they're) supposed to be helping her and taking care of her.' 'Due to patient privacy, we are unable to provide information about specific patients,' a spokesperson for Nationwide Children's Hospital told McClatchy News June 4 in an email. The coroner's report obtained by McClatchy News said Ellieana's injuries were caused by a fall from a crib. Her cause of death was listed as 'Congenital dilated cardiomyopathy complicated by blunt force head injuries.' The manner of death was ruled accidental. 'Ellie mommy misses you so much already, I just sat in your room and cried. Your bed's empty, your car seat was empty on the way home. This isn't real,' Marshall wrote on Facebook. 'I just want you back.' Ellieana's obituary said she had 'the most contagious smile that would light up the room' and brown eyes that 'you could stare into for hours.' 'You (were) a gift from God and as a gift I will cherish you for life,' her dad, Tyler Peyton, wrote on Facebook. McClatchy News reached out to Marshall for additional comments but did not hear back.

College athlete — brother of NFL player — shot and paralyzed in MN, dad says
A college football player was shot outside a Minnesota home, paralyzing him and ending his football dreams, according to local authorities and the victim's father. Michael Blidi Jr., who earned a scholarship to continue his football career at Iowa Central Community College, was shot May 29 in Brooklyn Park, police said. 'According to the victim, he was standing on the sidewalk when a vehicle stopped, the suspect got out of the vehicle, fired a single shot, and struck him in the abdomen,' the Brooklyn Park Police Department said in a Facebook post. The accused gunman fled, police said, and no arrests have been announced as of June 4. 'Thursday night, our son fell victim to gun violence, sustaining a gunshot wound that has shattered our family,' the victim's father, Michael Blidi Sr., said in a Facebook post. 'His football career has been abruptly terminated.' A standout at Milton Hershey School in Pennsylvania, according to Blidi Jr. was a member of the Stonehill College football team in Massachusetts during his freshman season. Set to transfer, Blidi Jr. has now been told he will not walk again, his father said in a GoFundMe. 'His dream was terminated by a gunshot wound to his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed from the knee down,' according to Blidi Sr., who described his son as 'a loving child full of life.' Emilio Diaz, a former high school teammate of Blidi Jr., described him to PennLive as a 'genuine kid' who 'devoted himself to wanting to get better.' 'I'm glad to know he is alive right now and his medical team is doing everything they can to keep him alive and on this earth,' he told the publication. 'I'm a faithful young man. This is a horrible tragedy, but it can lead to a larger triumph because I know Mike, and if he can do everything that he can, there's no doubt God has something planned for him, and I know that he is capable of more.' Blidi Jr. is the brother of former Auburn University defensive tackle Philip Blidi, who signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans in April.
