Two stroke survivors taking on 24-hour three peaks challenge
Andrew Wilson, from Clayton-le-Moors and Paul Wood, from Blackburn, have set themselves the task of climbing all three of Great Britain's tallest mountains in less than 24 hours to help fund a local cadet group.
They aim to raise £2,000 for Accrington Air Cadets to help fund a trip to Poland for the young people who use the service.
Andrew said: 'The youth deserve to have a trip that is going to teach them about why we don't forget the atrocities of the past, because if we don't remember it, it will be impossible to sort our future out.
'They said they would all like to go to Auschwitz and pay their respects.'
Having volunteered at the youth group for 12 months, Andrew was inspired by the work that was done there and the major benefits it had for young people in the community.
During the mammoth challenge, the pair are planning to drive themselves and expect to only have a 10-minute break to stretch on their route as they ascend Scotland's Ben Nevis, England's Scafell Pike, and Wales' Mount Snowdon.
Andrew added: 'We have done no training. We are typically blokes from the North West of England, thinking, ah, we can do that.
"We are doing our first training sessions next weekend and starting at Pendle Hill.
'Most people go with the Three Peaks challenge, and then they do all the driving.
"Because we don't want to take away from the cadets, we are not doing it that way, we are driving ourselves.'

Andrew has suffered two transient ischemic attacks, often referred to as a 'mini stroke', whilst Paul has suffered one.
All funds raised will be used to reduce the cost of the trip, with some young people in the cadets unable to cover the £900 cost for the trip.
The pair will be live-streaming the event on the Accrington Cadets' Facebook page and regularly updating people in WhatsApp groups.
Donations can be made to the group's GoFundMe page or dropped off at the air cadets' base in Harvey Street, Oswaldtwistle, between 7.30 and 9.30pm on Tuesdays.

Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin undergoes season ending elbow surgery
Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin undergoes season ending elbow surgery originally appeared on The Sporting News Just when the injuries to the Los Angeles Dodgers' pitching staff couldn't get any worse, it does. Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman confirmed to the media before Tuesday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels that right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin has undergone elbow surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2025 season, along with missing some time in 2026. Gonsolin underwent an internal brace procedure and flexor repair. According to Freidman, the expected recovery time will range between 8-10 months. The 31-year-old right-hander has had himself an injury-riddled 2025 that spans even further than that. After his 2022 season, in which he went 16-1 and posted an ERA of 2.14, Gonsolin underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023, which followed him in 2024 and missed the season entirely. Fast forward to 2025, Gonsolin was set to return to the Dodgers starting rotation before succumbing to a back injury that would sideline him until April. Gonsolin leaves his 2025 tenue with seven starts under his belt, posting an ERA of 5.00 and a record of 3-2. 13-year-old boy wakes up from coma
ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY, Mo. – Cody Trenkle, a 13-year-old boy rescued in a ravine after days without food or water, has awakened from his coma. Trenkle's mother, Stephanie Neely, who has not left his side since his recovery, shared the news with FOX 2. According to Neely, Cody is awake and is making slow progress in the right direction. Cody—who was rescued on July 30 following his disappearance while he was heading to a friend's house on his skateboard—suffered brain bleeding, severe head trauma, pneumonia, a leg injury and other infections from being in the water for a long period. FOX 2 previously reported that there's no specific time frame for when Cody will be able to leave the hospital, but since then, a GoFundMe page was created to support the 13-year-old's recovery. Mass. woman raises money on GoFundMe after bat flies into her mouth, prompting $21K medical bill
A Massachusetts woman who recently lost her job and was left with a $21,000 medical bill after a bat flew into her mouth during a trip to Arizona has set up a GoFundMe to support herself. Westford resident Erica Kahn previously worked as a biomedical engineer, she wrote in her fundraiser campaign's description. She lost her job last summer and thought she would have a new job in a few months. Kahn signed up for new coverage, but she did not know it had a 30-day waiting period, WCVB-TV reported. 'Since I was fun-employed, I traveled to Horseshoe Bend in Arizona, where my dad and I took some long exposure photos of the beautiful landscape at night,' Kahn wrote on GoFundMe. While she was taking photos, she saw bats flying nearby, The Arizona Republic reported. One flew into her mouth. 'As I was screaming, part of the bat unfortunately went in my mouth (fun fact, they taste earthy and a little sweet!),' Kahn wrote on GoFundMe. Kahn's father, who works as a doctor, told her to go to the emergency room for rabies shots, she wrote. Kahn had lost her $650-per-month COBRA plan 11 days earlier. So while she was in the emergency room, she tried to sign up through Innovative Partners Her claims were denied and she received her three shots and four rabies vaccine doses from other hospitals, Kahn wrote. The medical bills totaled $20,749.29. 'It's mentally pretty stressful to think about that sum of money,' Kahn told Republic. Kahn set up the GoFundMe with a goal of donating half of the proceeds to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to 'help provide healthcare to families in need,' she wrote. Her goal is to receive $12,000. 'I wish our healthcare system wasn't so broken in the United States,' she continued. 'I believe life-saving medical care is a fundamental human right and it's depressing that Americans can only turn to GoFundMe instead of a federally protected safety net. I made a mistake by choosing not to pay for COBRA, but the cost of these seven shots is pretty extreme. Also, I still believe that bats are an important part of our ecosystem and I feel no ill will toward them! Protect the bats!' The campaign has received 29 donations, including eight $50 donations. 'As Michael Scott said in 'The Office,' 'Myth: three Americans every year die from rabies. Fact: four Americans every year die from rabies,'' Kahn wrote at the end of her campaign.
