England's Hannah Hampton pays tribute to late grandfather after Euro 2025 win over Spain
Hampton was named player of the match after making two saves in England's 3-1 penalty shoot-out victory in Basel on Monday morning AEST.
It was a performance that capped a brilliant Women's European Championship campaign from the 24-year-old.
Posting on Instagram alongside a picture of her green England goalkeeper shirt with "grandpa" printed in the neckline, Hampton paid tribute to her late grandfather.
"You were one of my biggest supporters," Hampton wrote.
"You believed in me before I even knew what this journey would look like. You were always there — watching, encouraging, teaching.
"You taught me so much, not just about football, but about life. About staying grounded, working hard, being resilient and doing things the right way."
Hampton added: "I hope I made you proud, Grandpa. I carried you through every minute."
The England team returned home to a heroes' welcome on Monday following its triumph over the World Cup winners.
Government ministers hosted a reception to mark a victory hailed as an inspiration for young people across the nation.
Striker Chloe Kelly fired in the decisive spot-kick as England successfully defended the title it won on home soil three years ago.
In a video shared on social media on Monday, players were seen arriving at their post-match party, celebrating with a glass of wine as cheers erupted around them.
"I am so proud of this team. So grateful to wear this badge. So proud to be English," Kelly said.
England captain Leah Williamson said she was in total disbelief.
"Playing for this England team is unbelievable," Williamson said.
"You cannot put us down."
