'Bengaluru auto fares have gone up by 50%' : PC Mohan calls for fare regulations amid bike taxi ban
Passengers across the city have taken to social media to voice their concerns, with reports of exorbitant fares even for short distances. Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan has joined the chorus, urging the Karnataka government to take immediate action to protect commuters from what he called unchecked digital monopolies and collapsing fare regulation.
In a post on X, PC Mohan highlighted the issue with a personal example. 'A 1.5-km auto ride through aggregator apps now costs over ₹ 70. The fare structure has completely broken down. The government must step in, enforce metered fares, and dismantle digital cartelisation. Commuters have already been overcharged by ₹ 1,010 crore,' he wrote.

He further added that auto fares have surged by nearly 50% since the bike taxi ban. 'A 3-km ride now costs between ₹ 120 and ₹ 150. Riders are forced to pay extra 'tips' of ₹ 30 to ₹ 100 just to avoid cancellations. With meters largely dysfunctional and no oversight on aggregator pricing, urgent government intervention is needed,' he said.
Commuters have also shared their frustration online, demanding practical solutions from the transport department. One user suggested that the state should legalise multiple transport options such as bike taxis, shared autos, and point-to-point Tata Ace vans with fixed fares to increase accessibility and affordability.
Another user commented, 'Try taking an auto from KR Puram railway station after a train arrives. Even for 1–2 km, you'll experience the exploitative surge pricing first-hand. Government officials need to experience this like regular citizens do.'
A third post summed up the broader urban mobility crisis, stating, 'Bangalore has collapsed. I've spent four hours a day stuck in traffic all week. Outer Ring Road is a nightmare, and no one seems to care.'

Adopt rigorous monitoring to complete construction of Eklavya residential schools: House Panel
The parliamentary standing committee on Social Justice and Empowerment has said in a report tabled in Parliament Monday that the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) should adopt a concerted, proactive approach through rigorous monitoring so that construction work of all Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) is completed in a given timeframe. The committee also urged MoTA to finalise the pending locations for 10 out of 15 centres of excellence for sports proposed to be built within the residential schools meant for tribal students. Regarding the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utarkash Abhiyan scheme, the committee noted that many line ministries, which are crucial to the scheme's implementation, have yet to approve it. The Dharti Aaba scheme is targeted towards the saturation implementation of welfare schemes through 17 line ministries. The committee's report pertained to the action taken by the Centre on its recommendations in an earlier report on MoTA's Demand for Grants. 'In the action taken reply of the Ministry, the committee finds that the majority of new schools are being run from the rental buildings as only 87 school buildings have been constructed so far,' the committee noted in its report. The committee noted that EMRS is very crucial for providing quality education to the tribal students, particularly in remote areas. It added that thus, National Education Society for Tribal Students (NEST), should adopt a more concerted, result oriented and pro-active approach through continuous and rigorous monitoring of all activities related to construction of schools. In its March report, the House panel had recommended to MoTA that all old EMRS be upgraded in a time-bound manner and new schools sanctioned be made functional in their own building. It had also recommended that requisite funds and necessary guidance should be provided to executing agencies to avoid a shortage of funds for the scheme. The residential schools for students belonging to the Scheduled Tribe community were set up from 1988 onwards. Initially, 288 schools were funded through grants under Article 275 (1) of the Constitution. In 2018-19, the Central sector scheme of Eklavya Model Residential School was started to provide quality education at par with Navodaya Vidyalaya to tribal children in their environment. Under the new scheme, the government decided to establish 440 EMRS, one in every block that has more than 50 per cent of ST population and at least 20,000 tribal persons (as per census 2011). The new target is to set up 728 schools for 3.5 lakh tribal ST students, as per government data. The government informed the panel that out of 288 schools approved previously, 256 have been completed up till January 17, work was progressing on 23, and 9 were in the pre-construction stage. Out of the 717 locations approved for EMRS, 476 are already functional. 'The proposal for upgradation of 189 old Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) has been approved. NESTS is consistently engaging with state governments to make use of this opportunity,' MoTA informed the House panel. The committee had said in its March report that out of 452 EMRS sanctioned, 223 are functional, and 211 out of 288 old EMRS have been identified for upgradation. The committee had also noted challenges such as the availability of appropriate land, non-availability of construction material due to state government policy, extreme weather conditions, non-availability of electricity supply, in the construction of EMRS. PM Modi to visit Bengaluru today, flag off three Vande Bharat trains
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a one-day visit to Karnataka on Sunday to inaugurate a series of major infrastructure and transport projects in Bengaluru. As part of the visit, the Prime Minister will flag off three new Vande Bharat Express trains from KSR Bengaluru Railway Station. These will include the Bengaluru–Belagavi service (physical flag-off), and virtual inaugurations of the Amritsar–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Nagpur (Ajni)–Pune routes. These trains are expected to significantly improve connectivity across various parts of the country, further strengthening India's high-speed rail network. Following the flag-off ceremony, PM Modi will inaugurate the much-awaited Yellow Line of the Namma Metro, which stretches from Ragigudda (RV Road) to Electronic City. He will also undertake a metro ride between the two stations. This new corridor will cater to thousands of daily commuters, especially in the tech corridor of Electronic City, and is expected to begin commercial operations from 5:00 a.m. on Monday. The Prime Minister will then lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple urban infrastructure and connectivity projects in the city. A key highlight will be the foundation laying of Bangalore Metro Phase-3, a Rs 15,610 crore project that will add over 44 km of route length and 31 elevated stations to the city's metro network. At around 1 p.m., the Prime Minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of urban connectivity projects in Bengaluru. He will also address a public function. Due to the high-level visit and expected crowds, the Bengaluru Traffic Police have implemented traffic restrictions and parking bans across several routes between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Major impacted areas include Marenahalli Main Road, Electronic City Flyover, Hosur Road, and internal roads in Electronics City Phase 1 like Infosys Avenue, Velankani Road, and HP Avenue Road. Citizens are advised to plan alternate routes and avoid restricted zones during these hours. Over 10,000 police personnel will be deployed across the city, and more than 50 checkpoints will be in place to ensure smooth movement and security.
