Chery launches new Lepas premium brand and it's coming to South Africa
Yet another Chinese vehicle brand is heading to South Africa, following the introduction of Chery's new Lepas nameplate at the recent Shanghai Auto Show.
Chery describes it as 'ushering in a new premium era', but says it will cover all mainstream segments with a diverse portfolio that caters for families as well as luxury car buyers.
First out the starting blocks is the L8 SUV, and it is set to be followed by the smaller L6 and L4 SUV models, which embody a similar design language, which Chery refers to as 'Leopard Aesthetics'.
The Lepas name, incidentally, is a combination of the words 'Leap' and 'Passion'.
Chery has no shortage of automotive brands in its portfolio. It already owns the Jaecoo, Omoda and Jetour nameplates, although these are marketed separately, and Chery also unveiled its Himla bakkie sub-brand at the Shanghai show, which is bound for South Africa too.
Lepas didn't release detailed specifications for its L8 flagship model displayed at the Shanghai show, but international media report that it will be offered with a combination of petrol, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

Chinese warehouse workers welcome Trump's extended tariff truce
Employees in China's export hubs are cautiously optimistic as US President Donald Trump prolongs a fragile truce on tariffs with Beijing. Labourer Shuai Hang went a week without work earlier this year when sky-high US tariffs on Chinese goods overwhelmed the warehouse he works at and slowed the company's US-bound parcels to a trickle. But on Tuesday, after US President Donald Trump announced a truce on those duties would be extended, the depot in southern China's manufacturing hub Guangzhou was alive with noise as workers stuffed trucks with packages of clothes and kitchenware. Many are destined for the doorsteps of US customers of Chinese-founded online shopping giant Temu. Tariffs hit workers' wages and job stability 'Tariffs impact our daily lives,' said 31-year-old Shuai, whose monthly pay of more than 10,000 yuan ($1,400) had dropped by a third previously. 'If tariffs are slightly lower, then there are more outgoing shipments, and then we have higher wages,' he said. Trump's tariff policies since taking office have upended global trade and set off a blistering tit-for-tat with Beijing — but in May the two major economies agreed to a fragile truce, with each temporarily lowering levies on the other's goods. That agreement was extended to November by Trump on Monday, hours before it expired. Deliveries plunge during peak tariff periods At the height of the tariffs, said Shuai, who has been loading parcels for Guangzhou-based logistics company Weijiang International for a year, 'there was not a single truck' for him to fill, so he couldn't work. 'We might have been worried in May, but now we are indifferent,' said Xiong. 'We are used to it'. 'Cards reshuffled' These days the warehouse is sending out 100 tonnes of packages every 24 hours, with up to 70 trucks making trips. On Tuesday industrial fans whirred as sweat-slicked workers methodically scanned yellow, black and sage green bundles into lorries. Xiong's company has recently invested in its own warehouse in Chicago. While the truce is welcome, Shuai, who packs three to four tonnes in a truck daily, said he still pays close attention to tariff news. 'For those of us who have travelled over 1,000 kilometres to work here, we definitely don't want frequent breaks. We all want to earn more money,' said the native of neighbouring Guizhou province. Chery completes CSH roll-out with Tiggo 8 plug-in hybrid
Chery has officially completed the roll-out of its Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) models in South Africa with the arrival of the Tiggo 8 CSH. Not the flagship The Citizen reports that joining the Tiggo 7 Pro Max and Tiggo 7 Pro, the Tiggo 8 CSH adopts the same plug-in hybrid configuration as the latter, but is restricted to a single, unbadged derivative which, surprisingly, isn't the local line-up's new flagship. Positioned between the two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the Tiggo 8 Pro Max, the Tiggo 8 CSH doesn't adopt the 'Pro' suffix and as such, will be marketed as the Tiggo 8 CSH as opposed to the Hybrid-e description used at its official preview launch in China two years ago. Changes inside and out Similar to the newly facelifted Tiggo 7, which takes leave of the 'Pro' and 'Pro Max' names, the Tiggo 8 CSH differs aesthetically from the combustion models by featuring a new grille with black surrounds, a restyled front bumper, standard Auto High Beam Assist LED headlights and new 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the differences continue in the shape of the same centre console as sister brand Jaecoo's J7, complete with a pair of wireless smartphone chargers, a rotary drive mode selector and two cupholders. With the gear lever moving to the steering column, Chery has also redesigned the Tiggo 8 CSH's dashboard by eschewing the dual 12.3-inch displays for a freestanding instrument cluster of the same size, plus a new 15.6-inch infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latter's inclusion has seen the central air vents move to the centre console, while the previous toggle switches and physical buttons on the steering wheel make way for touch-sensitive switchgear. Space and tech As with the rest of the Tiggo 8 range, the CSH keeps the seven-seat layout, with boot space ranging from 117-litres to 494-litres. Dropping the middle row results in space maxing out at 1 930-litres. The result is a total system output of 255kW/525Nm, an electric-only range of 90km, and a combined overall distance of 1 200km. The claimed fuel consumption is 5.2L/100km. Sending the amount of twist to the front axle is a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). In addition, three driving modes are offered: Eco, Normal and Sport.
