Govt takes step towards agri sector reforms

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday instructed relevant authorities to formulate a long-term and sustainable policy aimed at advancing the country's agro-industrial sector.
The directive from the prime minister comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance agricultural productivity, combat climate change, and promote economic resilience.
Chairing a high-level meeting on agricultural sector reforms, Sharif emphasised the importance of modernising the country's agriculture through coordinated efforts involving provincial governments and key stakeholders.

'The agriculture sector holds immense potential for driving Pakistan's economic development,' he added. 'With fertile land, skilled professionals, and hardworking farmers, we must harness these resources to achieve self-sufficiency.'
Sharif called for the development of a National Agri-Innovation Plan, with a focus on research and modern technology to increase crop yields and sustainability.
He also urged the expansion of agricultural loans under favourable terms, and reforms to the existing seed certification system to promote the use of high-quality seeds.
He also said that a regulatory framework for the agricultural sector is also to be developed, with an emphasis on facilitating technological integration and ensuring environmental sustainability.
The meeting included presentations from a working group on agricultural reforms, and was attended by federal ministers, Rana Tanveer Hussain, Ahad Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Musadik Malik, and senior government officials.

Along with the act of animal sacrifice, Eid calls upon us to make a solemn pledge to always care for those in need,' President Zardari said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz said the message of Eid-ul-Adha is not limited to the sacrifice of animals alone, but teaches us to sacrifice our ego, desires, and personal interests for higher purposes. Eid teaches us not only the importance of sacrificing life and wealth but also that nations achieve greatness when they work for collective welfare and selflessness alongside individual development, the PM said. 'Today, we must especially remember our Palestinian brothers and sisters who are enduring ruthless and inhumane oppression and hunger.'

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday exchanged Eid greetings with Muslim world leaders in separate telephonic conversations, the Prime Minister's Office said. During a telephonic conversation with Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, the prime minister extended cordial Eid greetings to Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait, as well as to the brotherly people of Kuwait. The two leaders prayed for peace and prosperity of the Ummah. The prime minister thanked His Highness the Crown Prince for Kuwait's strong and balanced position in support of peace and dialogue during the recent crisis between Pakistan and India. He emphasized that Pakistan had always desired peace in the region. In a phone call with Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani the premier extended warm wishes to him and the brotherly people of Qatar. He expressed gratitude to the Qatari Amir for his proactive diplomacy and valuable efforts in helping to de-escalate tensions between Pakistan and India during the recent crisis. The premier especially acknowledged Sheikh Tamim's timely phone call at the peak of the crisis, and also appreciated the supportive role played by Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister.
