Virat Kohli retirement: Timeline of events that led to end of decorated Test career

India Today14-05-2025

Virat Kohli's retirement from Test cricket has come as a bolt from the blue. Why? Because at a time when most observers expected him to carry on for a couple more years, the decision does appear rather abrupt. Granted, the selectors had reserved the right to drop him in the near future. After all, he had endured a lean run over the past five years-just one century in that period, with his average dipping from 54 to 46.advertisementBut for a bona fide fighter, a cricketer who built his career by defying the odds and silencing critics, walking away in the face of an uncertain future seems uncharacteristic. And while the retirement decision was Kohli's alone-not one taken by the BCCI-it would not be inaccurate to suggest that recent messaging from the selectors nudged him towards bringing his illustrious 14-year Test career to an end. Also Read: Test cricket will feel quieter without its gladiatorSo, what exactly transpired in recent months? What led a man who, until a month or two ago, was intent on touring England and scoring centuries on those challenging shores to suddenly step away from the format he had often described as his "favourite"?SECOND WEEK OF DECEMEBER 2024This is when the sequence of events truly began to unfold. India lost the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide under Rohit Sharma, after having won the opener in Perth under Jasprit Bumrah. The Indian selectors felt that the team lacked clarity and direction during the transition of captaincy between the two matches.advertisementConcerns emerged about the team's mindset during the interim practice match in Canberra. Instead of strategising for the remainder of the series, players seemed to be in a holiday mood.According to sources close to Kohli, this is when he was informally sounded out about leading the Test side again in the short term, at least until a young captain could be identified. It's worth noting that this coincided with Kohli scoring a century in Perth-a reminder of his enduring class with the bat.LAST WEEK OF DECEMBER 2024India went on to lose the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, falling 2-1 behind in the series with only one match remaining. The chance of retaining the BGT was gone. Kohli, too, had a disappointing run with the bat across the last three Tests.Talks with the selectors resumed, this time with a notable change in tone. Kohli was made aware that his place in the side was no longer secure. For a player of his stature, being under threat of the axe was a first-and a jarring experience.Despite the pressure, Kohli remained determined. He was convinced he could still deliver both as a batter and, if needed, as captain. That conviction was on display when he stepped in as interim skipper for the Sydney Test in Bumrah's absence.advertisementLAST WEEK OF JANUARY 2025Kohli turned out for Delhi in a Ranji Trophy fixture-his way of reaffirming commitment to the red-ball format. During that time, he reportedly told Delhi coach Sarandeep Singh that he was looking forward to the England tour and was determined to score multiple hundreds, silencing critics once again.LAST WEEK OF APRIL 2025 Things began to shift once more during the IPL. In informal conversations, selectors briefed Kohli on the evolving situation: The team management had decided to back a young captain for the England tour, rather than appoint an interim leader.Despite Kohli's stature and past performances, he would now be assessed like any other batter-meaning poor form could lead to exclusion from the squad.Feeling increasingly disillusioned, Kohli reportedly informed the selectors that he did not wish to be part of the England tour.FIRST WEEK OF MAY 2025Close associates within Indian cricket and some officials from the BCCI made efforts to persuade Kohli to reconsider. But his mind was made up. 12 MAY 2025 Virat Kohli formally announced his retirement from Test cricket, stating: "It's not easy to step away from this format, but it feels right. I'll always look back at my Test career with a smile."And just like that, the curtains fell on one of India's greatest Test careers. The announcement has also triggered the search for India's next No. 4 in Tests-a position held with unmatched consistency by two legends, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, for over four decades.Tune InMust Watch

Vijay Mallya ‘overwhelmed' by podcast gaining 2 crore views, says ‘fills my heart with joy, factual story being heard…'

Vijay Mallya, the former owner of 2025 IPL champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines, has reacted to the reception of his extensive podcast with YouTuber Raj Shamani. The podcast, titled 'Vijay Mallya Podcast: Rise & Downfall Of Kingfisher Airlines, Loans & RCB', has so far garnered 2 crore views on YouTube, besides multiple clips being shared on other social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. In a post on X on June 10, Vijay Mallya wrote: 'To say that I am humbled and overwhelmed is well short of what I truly feel.' 'A big heartfelt thank you to all those who took the time to watch my 4 hour plus podcast with @rajshamani 20 million views on YouTube alone in 4 days and god knows how many more reposts on Instagram and Facebook fills my heart with joy that my true factual story is being heard. May god bless you all. (sic)' he added. Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, fled India in 2016 after being accused in a bank loan default case of over ₹ 9,000 crore. During the podcast he denied all allegations and issued a rare apology to his former employees while reflecting on the fall of Kingfisher Airlines. He also spoke at length about his first media appearance in nine years, the rise and collapse of Kingfisher, and how he founded the IPL franchise team RCB. When asked by when Shamani, 'Would you be willing to return to country if you are assured fair time'. The fugitive responded, 'If I am assured, Absolutely I will. I will think about it seriously.' On the allegations of financial misconduct, Vijay Mallya said, 'You may call me a fugitive for not going to India post March, but I didn't run away. I flew on a prescheduled visit. Fair enough, I didn't return for reasons that I consider are valid… so if you want to call me a fugitive, go ahead. But where is the 'chor' (thief) coming from? Where is the 'chori' (theft)? From where is the 'chor' [thief] comming from? Where is 'chori' [theft]?' Vijay Mallya lives in Britain at present, and has been embroiled in a long legal battle with lenders – as well as the Indian authorities – following the 2012 collapse of his defunct Kingfisher Airlines. He is accused of defrauding a consortium of Indian banks of over ₹ 9,000 crore (approximately $1.2 billion), primarily through loans granted to Kingfisher Airlines. In February, Mallya informed the Karnataka High Court that the ₹ 6,200 crore debt he owes to the banks has been recovered 'multiple times over,' and requested a detailed statement of accounts showing the amounts recovered from him, his liquidated company United Breweries, and other certificate debtors.

Rishabh Pant breaks Lord's roof with monstrous six, shows pulsating trailer before India vs England Test series

The Shubman Gill-led India have arrived in the UK and the 18-member squad has begun its training in full swing for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, beginning June 20 in Headingley, Leeds. The squad, which is minus Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma due to their Test retirements, started preparing for the high-octane series last week. India are currently based in London and have been training at the Lord's Cricket Ground, which is also the venue for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Rishabh Pant has begun his preparation in full swing and the left-handed batter is leaving no stone unturned in fine-tuning his skills to take on the likes of Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes. During a training session at the Lord's Cricket Ground, Rishabh Pant was seen practising big-hitting against the spinners, and it was then that he showed what he is truly capable of. Off the bowling of Washington Sundar, the left-handed Pant brought out the slog sweep and this ended up breaking the roof of the training ground at the Lord's Cricket Ground. This might be just a trailer for the upcoming India versus England Test series. Pant has a good record in the UK, having smashed two centuries. In the nine matches he has played on English soil, the 27-year-old has scored 556 runs at an average of 32.70. His numbers would have looked abysmal had he not scored a century in the final league stage match against the eventual champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Against Rajat Patidar's side, Pant played an unbeaten knock of 118. However, this knock went in vain as RCB chased the total down. The Indian team will be playing an intra-squad match later this week against India A ahead of the first Test against England. The match is set to begin on June 13. India A recently played out two draws against the England Lions. However, the likes of Karun Nair and KL Rahul impressed one and all and the duo have emerged as the sure-shot starters in the playing XI in the first Test. The Test series between India and England will commence on June 20 in Leeds. The action will then move to Birmingham for the second Test. The Lord's Cricket Ground will host the third Test, while Old Trafford and Kennington Oval will host the fourth and fifth Tests of the series, respectively. India squad: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

Bengaluru matches moved out of KSCA: BCCI

BENGALURU: Amid rising concerns over Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) administrative stability in the aftermath of Wednesday's stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, hosting of cricket in the city has taken a huge hit. The first casualty is the three-match one-day series between India 'A' and South Africa 'A' scheduled to be held here from Nov 13 to 19. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Without specifying any reason, Indian cricket board ( BCCI ) issued a press release, stating Bengaluru matches have been shifted to Rajkot. The KSCA president did not dwell on the reasons but maintained that the stampede and change of venues were not related. Sources said the decision was taken on Thursday and communicated to KSCA. Poll Do you believe the stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium will impact future cricket events in Bengaluru? Yes, significantly Yes, but not much No, it won't have an impact Unsure Before the limited-overs series, the two teams will play two multi-day red-ball matches and those will be held as per schedule at BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) — a dedicated centre near the airport on the outskirts of the city. This could probably be the beginning of problems for KSCA as a host association. MLC: Venky Harinarayan on growing cricket in the USA, AI-driven teams and the Olympic boost Speaking to TOI, former India captain Shantha Rangaswamy said, 'I'm yet to come to terms with the tragedy at the stadium, which has brought joy and happiness to fans for 50 years. If the women's World Cup matches are shifted out of Bengaluru, it will be a huge blow to cricket in the state. As for women's cricket, we haven't seen much growth in the past two-and-a-half years, and it will set us back further.' According to sources, it is unlikely KSCA will host a major cricket match for some time. To begin with, the stadium needs to be renovated, with the fan frenzy on Wednesday resulting in significant damage to the structure, including compound walls, railings, the staircase, and sanitation.
