Casamigo in Thiruvananthapuram serves a blend of international flavours in a cosy bistro setting

The Hindu2 days ago

The wicker basket of toasted bread and butter placed on a table covered with a green plaid tablecloth at Casamigo transports you to an Italian supper setting. Resembling a European bakery, the bistro, located at Ambalathumukku in Pettah, Thiruvananthapuram, reveals a cosy interior with warm hues illuminated by lanterns. An abundance of imitation plants and flowers adorn the ceiling, while desserts gaze intently at the entrance through a misty glass case at the counter.
'It took us around a year to set this up,' says owner Anusha Ann Antony, who worked in the aviation sector in Africa with her husband earlier.
'I was in Africa for 10 years, but I didn't feel like I fit into my job there. I was idle for a bit and then started baking for my friends and neighbours — a mixed crowd of Lebanese, French, American, and Europeans. They motivated me to start baking as a business, and I did that there for seven years,' says Anusha, who recently moved to Thiruvananthapuram from Bengaluru after her stint in Africa.
'When I got here, I wanted to do something more than baking cakes. I wanted to bring in the taste of my travels to the table,' says Anusha, attempting to showcase fusion food, combining elements of Asian, French, Italian and African cooking. At Casamigo, cuisines blend seamlessly, from the sweet and spicy wings to fly to stewper boeuf (a version of French beef stew).
Wings to fly is a rendition of the classic wings tossed into a wok with a sticky, sweet and spicy sauce, generously coated with chopped shallots, scallions, chilli flakes and so on. The baked wings are tossed into the sauce which is rich in aroma. It is a great start to a meal at ₹180.
While the name stewper boeuf might sound foreign, the flavours share similarities with the Kerala-style beef stew. The marbled meat is braised for six hours in the oven with mushrooms and Italian herbs. It is generously seasoned with powdered pepper and peppercorns. The beef fat from the braising, creates a rich gravy. It is pure bliss to scrape off the gravy with a piece of buttered bread, and a small piece of tender meat with a soft, fat lining. It is priced at ₹340 and is available with buttered bread and rice.
Amigos spaghetti is a bowl of Italian pasta served with an array of luncheon meats and a fried egg. The long and thin pasta is tossed in a butter-based sauce and garnished with chilli oil, which breaks the richness of the butter. While tomatoes are used in the sauce, it steers clear of being the typical red-sauce pasta dish. The flavours of oregano and other Italian herbs sing through this pasta dish at ₹290.
Their menu also includes dishes such as amigos chicken, a plate of shredded slow-cooked chicken flavoured with African spices and Italian herbs. It is served with porotta or rumali roti and is available at ₹280. Belly belly bake (₹240), a baked and stuffed bell pepper dish, and paneer blanche (₹250) with mushroom gravy are available for vegetarians.
Desserts at Casamigo have gained social media attention since their opening in April. Their strawberry cheesecake with an Oreo biscuit base can be suggested for people who like their desserts, a little less sweet. The strawberry jam on top adds tartness to the dish while the crumb and cream cheese contribute to sweetness. However, this dessert was on the slightly heavier side and could be served in a smaller portion.
Blush milk cake from Casamigo is the star of the dessert menu. This rendition of a tres leches cake with rose milk is the perfect ending to a meal. The soft, spongy, moist cake soaks in the fragrant rose and saffron milk, which oozes out on a tender touch of the spoon. Topped with a white chocolate mousse, each bite is a contrasting sensation of textures — light, moist sponge with a slightly heavier but smooth mousse, dry rose petals and a few nuts too. It is inevitable to pour rose milk into the plate until you run out of cake and all you can do is drink it directly and count the calories. The dish is available at ₹180.

Experience life by Odisha's Chilika Lake at the Rambha Palace, a boutique hotel with European aesthetics

A forgotten palace, with peeling walls and cobwebbed ceilings, once stood at the far end of a quaint village in Odisha. Locals called it Rani Palace. Today, it stands with its original sheen intact, as a boutique hotel, by the Chilika Lake in Rambha, a town in Ganjam district. Rambha's streets come alive in the evenings with shops selling fresh catch off the Chilika. It is home to several families who depend on the river for a living. Rambha Palace, a walkable distance from the lake, lets one experience life by a lagoon in a setup fit for the kings. We arrive at its gates on a humid afternoon from Bhubaneshwar, that is around 120 kilometres away. The palace was restored over a period of six years by Chana Daswatte, a protégé of the popular Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Walking past the foyer, the walls of which have photos of the palace from its previous life, we instantly feel the antiquity of the building. Everything, right from the billiards table, crystal chandeliers, terrazzo tiles, lime plaster walls, sabai grass carpets, and ikkat-inspired interiors, feels right out of a museum display, yet, retains a certain newness. This is the result of the restoration team's guiding principle — to retain the soul of the original 18th Century structure. Himangini Singh, co-founder, Hunch Ventures and partner, Rambha Palace, who has taken the property on lease from the royal family, says that the village and the palace always take her back to her childhood when she would visit the Chilika with her parents. When she first saw it in its decayed state, she says, 'It felt like it was quietly asking for a second chance.' They set out to restore it using materials and techniques that were used in the original architecture. Himangini, who played an important role in its restoration, adds, 'Throughout the journey, we often asked ourselves: If Rambha's Rani were restoring this palace today, what choices would she make? How would she have lived? What aesthetics would she have embraced? This imagined narrative became our compass. We drew inspiration from her envisioned values, her love for her people, her affinity for local talent, her refined yet grounded sensibility.' European roots After a late afternoon lunch of a typical Odia thali — their in-house restaurant serves local as well as Continental and Chinese food — head chef Gaurav Juyal walks us through the sprawling lawns with ornate fountain centrepieces. The palace, he explains, was built by Thomas Snodgrass, who was the Collector of Ganjam from 1791-92. 'It was built by European architects and engineers,' he explains, adding that it was eventually bought by king Rama Krushna Mardaraj of Khallikote and later, by king Harihar Mardaraj, who played a crucial role in the Odia Movement until his death in 1909. An important monument in the history of Ganjam, it was here, explains Gaurav, that the foundation stone of the Utkal Union Conference (UUC) was laid. The palace played host to thousands of delegates from the various Odia Speaking Tracts, and the UUC eventually lead to the unification of Odisha. The main structure is flanked by a printing room and ice mill room on one side, both of which have also been renovated. Himangini says that the only modification they did was for the roof. 'Originally divided into six smaller sections, it has now been unified into a single, stronger roof,' she says, adding that the revival was a 'careful, deliberate process.' The property, spread across six acres, has 15 rooms for guests. It was opened to the public on April 1, 2024. While the queen was not able to witness the palace after its restoration, Himangini says her family visited it, walking through the halls and lawns. 'It was an emotional moment,' she says, adding that their response was 'one of the most meaningful validations of everything we had hoped to achieve.' Markets and rain hats An important part of the itinerary for guests at the palace, is a visit to the village. Rambha is home to several artisanal fishermen. On the highway by the village, is an ancient dry-fish market that is run entirely by women. Prawns are a mainstay at most of the shops here. At Renuka Bahera's stall for instance, there are over five dried prawn varieties, that she sells for ₹200 to ₹400 a kilogram, depending on the size. How can we not visit their fish markets? Here, one can see gigantic, freshly caught prawns that are still alive and wriggling — a rare sight, as any regular at seafood markets would agree. Ragunath Behera, a middleman between fishermen and sellers, explains that most of what is caught at Chilika is taken to a fish depot at nearby Balugaun town, the largest in the region. 'This is then purchased by sellers who have shops at the markets here,' he explains. Rambha is also home to bamboo artisans from whom one can buy baskets and the exquisite talari, hats worn by workers in the fields. These hats, used for protection against the sun and rain, are huge — so huge that they do not fit into even the largest suitcase. We buy one nevertheless and lug it around the airport on our journey back, drawing curious glances. But there can be no better souvenir from Odisha. Room tariffs start from ₹30,000. There are special fares for summer and monsoon months ranging from ₹19,000 onwards. Rambha can be reached by road or train from Bhubaneshwar. Prince Harry ‘Feels Alone' In California With Meghan Markle, Misses UK Friends: Report

Last Updated: The Duke of Sussex is feeling 'desperately lonely,' largely cut off from longtime friends and family, and struggling to find meaningful companionship in California. Prince Harry may be living in a $14 million Italian-style mansion in California with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children but behind the gates life is far from idyllic for the former royal family member, it was reported. NewsNation reported, citing unnamed sources, the Duke of Sussex is feeling 'desperately lonely," largely cut off from longtime friends and family, and struggling to find meaningful companionship in California. 'He doesn't really have any real friends in the area except for polo star Nacho Figueras, and Nacho travels constantly for matches," a friend told the outlet, adding, 'He spends a lot of his time chilling with his bodyguards." Prince Harry is said to remain close with a few of his inner circle from the UK, including Guy Pelly and Mark Dyer but the distance and time zone differences make regular contact difficult. The source said as per the outlet, 'There's no one else for him to hang out with besides Nacho, Meghan, and the children." The UK royal's social circle has narrowed since stepping back from official duties and relocating to the US in 2020, the report claimed, citing a friend who said, 'It's hard to forge deep friendships when you're older especially when you're wary of people leaking things to the press." Another source compared Prince Harry's exile-like existence to that of his great-great-uncle Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne for love and lived out his days abroad with Wallis Simpson. 'It's like history is repeating itself," the friend said. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have remained in the public eye through Netflix deals, books and public appearances. Although behind the scenes, Prince Harry is also said to have been frustrated over delays in securing British passports for his children, Archie and Lilibet. 'Meghan wishes her husband could feel less burdened by the past and more present in the life they've built together," a source told People Magazine. First Published: June 06, 2025, 21:08 IST
