Rayan Khan making a name for himself as he follows in father Khurram's footsteps in UAE cricket

In the decade and a half he spent putting together arguably the finest career yet by a UAE cricketer, Khurram Khan rarely looked flustered.
The all-rounder might have been one of the feistiest competitors the country has ever produced. But when he was at the batting crease, he was seldom anything other than calm and composed.
His move into coaching - and more specifically parenthood - has altered that, though. The former UAE captain's son, Rayan, is showing great promise in the sport, although his dad often has to watch from behind the sofa.
'When I used to play cricket, when I went out to bat I was as calm as anything,' Khurram said.
'Now when he is batting, I can only watch four or five balls. In the [Under 19] Asia Cup, he played four or five matches here and the only one I could watch was against India.
'I watched the others on TV, because I didn't have the courage to go and sit there and watch him. For the India game, I came here and sat watching with my wife, and there were always jitters.
'I cannot watch him batting. If he says he played well and scored some runs, I'll turn on and watch the highlights.'
Happily, son Rayan is taking everything in his stride. Carrying on the family name in a country where his father achieved so much could be a burden. But, despite his youth, he appears to understand the challenges facing him.
Islamabad-born Rayan attended a non-cricket playing school in Sharjah. He became aware of the sport on the sidelines watching his dad as a small child, but only started pursuing it seriously in his mid-teens.
His progress was swift, and at 15 he was selected to play age-group cricket for the UAE.
'It felt good that I got selected so early, but there was a question in my mind, 'Did I get selected because of my dad, or was it because of my performances?',' Rayan said.
'But I went on to perform well in the camp, and so those doubts went away.'
Rayan was only eight when his father went off to represent the country for two months at the 2015 Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
His memories of that are vague, but he says watching his dad inspired a passion for the sport in himself.
'My first memory of cricket was going to The Sevens Stadium in Dubai and watching my dad play when I was nine. I absolutely fell in love with cricket,' Rayan said.
'I used to watch him play and I got motivated to do the same. That is how it started.'
Now he is making his own way in the sport. But he is aware he will be known by some for being the son of the player who as good as single-handedly inspired UAE's qualification for T20 and 50-over World Cups a little over a decade ago.
'Two or three years ago, when I started playing good matches in A Division cricket, people would come up to me and say, 'Your dad was one of the best in the UAE',' he said.
'It is a big deal - the legacy he has in UAE cricket. I realised it was a big thing and that I should be grateful for it.
'It is scary sometimes when I go out to bat and I have to live up to his legacy and the expectations of it.
'But it is good because he can give me some good advice after all the years he has played. He has plenty of experience, so he can help me out. That is better for me.'
Tuition is, after all, Khurram's day job now. After juggling his own playing career with a job with Emirates Airline, he is now a coach at Sharjah Cricket Academy.

He says Rayan is more advanced than he was at his age. There is a good reason for that: Khurram played nothing more than tape-ball cricket before attending university, and was nearly 30 by the time he started out on international cricket with the UAE.
'I am coaching now, and there is the risk you always judge everybody at your standards,' Khurram said.
'But he is young. He started playing cricket at nine or 10, and he is only 18. I hadn't even started playing cricket at 18; I started at university. He has a long way to go, but he is learning very fast.
'When somebody in your family has played cricket and you are living with that, obviously there is a positive side to it.
'There is also pressure. Whatever happens, every time he comes back I will talk him through his batting. If I have seen him batting I will ask what he was feeling, if he was feeling confident, and ask him to talk me through his innings.
'He will have that sort of pressure. He will know if he has got out in a certain way I will ask him about it, but there is always pressure.'
For all the wisdom his dad can impart, Rayan's ambitions are his own. He has already had some noteworthy achievements, too, most obviously when he made a half-century against Pakistan in the U19 Asia Cup last winter.
He knows only performances, rather than a family name, will get him to where he wants to go. And that is the very top with the UAE senior men's team.
'Being in the UAE, one of the biggest dreams is to help make UAE a Test nation,' Rayan said.
'You also want to make the ILT20 and play in T20 leagues. If you perform well in one, there is scope for you to play in more. If you play in three or four, you can make a big name for yourself.'

Sharjah gears up to host Pakistan and Afghanistan in T20 Tri-Series

UAE will host Pakistan and Afghanistan in a seven-match T20I Tri-Series at the historic Sharjah Cricket Stadium from Aug. 29. The three teams will play each other twice in the six-match group stage. The top two teams will then compete in the Sept. 7 final. Afghanistan will take on Pakistan in the tournament opener Aug.29). UAE will play Pakistan on Aug. 30 followed by Afghanistan's clash against UAE on Sept. 1 and their second group-stage match against Pakistan on Sept. 2. Pakistan and UAE's second group-stage match will be played on Sept. 4 followed by the Afghanistan-UAE match on Sept. 5. The tournament will provide the ideal preparation opportunity to the three teams ahead of the eight-team ACC Asia Cup 2025 which will be played in the UAE from Sept. 9. India and Pakistan are set to meet in the marquee 2025 Men's Asia Cup group stage clash on Sept.14. In the detailed fixtures announced by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) recently, India will also face UAE and Oman on Sept.10 and 19 respectively. In the tournament happening from Sept.9-28, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi as the likely venues, India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman are placed in Group A, while Group B comprises of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Hong Kong. After the group stage clash between India and Pakistan on Sept.14, both the teams might take on each other in the Super Fours and potentially the final to be held on Sept.28. It is understood that India will play all its game at the Dubai International Stadium, though the schedule released by ACC doesn't have any mention of it. 'Hosting the ACC Men's T20 Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE allows fans from across Asia to come together in a setting that mirrors our region's incredible diversity. When crowds gather to witness the tournament's unforgettable clashes, it will be a great reminder of cricket's power to build bridges,' said ACC President Mohsin Naqvi said in an official statement. It's also the first time Asia Cup, to be held in the T20I format keeping in mind the preparation for 2026 Men's T20 World Cup, will have eight teams. Top two teams from each group will proceed to the Super Fours stage, with the top two facing each other in the title clash. While India is the designated host of the Asia Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will stage the tournament in the UAE due to the mutual agreement between them and Pakistan to play at neutral venues in 2027 owing to the geopolitical and diplomatic tensions between the two nations. The tournament was in uncertainty due to India-Pakistan cross-border tensions in May, but an ACC meeting in Dhaka on July 24 cleared the decks for the tournament to happen. A recent spat of a brief war between the countries added fuel to the rivalry. The neighbours have not met on either side's soil in a bilateral series since 2012, and only play each other in international tournaments on neutral grounds as part of a compromise deal. But already-frosty relations took a turn for the worse this year when the two nuclear rivals fought an intense four-day conflict, their worst standoff in decades. More than 70 people were killed in missile, drone and artillery fire on both sides. The conflict was triggered by an April 22 attack on civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir that New Delhi accused Pakistan of backing -- a charge Islamabad denies. India are the defending champions of the Asia Cup, having beaten Sri Lanka in the 2023 final held in the 50-over format in Colombo. Sri Lanka had won the Asia Cup in the T20I version after beating Pakistan in the final in 2022. 'The ACC Men's T20 Asia Cup is the marquee event of Asian cricket, and we are proud to present an expanded platform this year. This year marks yet another milestone in ACC's journey and a noteworthy development for cricket in Asia.' 'With the inclusion of additional teams in the tournament, we are witnessing the game's boundaries expand, both geographically and competitively. This will be Asia Cup at its finest,' added Naqvi.

UAE to play Afghanistan and Pakistan in T20 tri-series in Sharjah

Cricket fans in UAE are set for a T20 summer bonanza after it was announced that the national team will host a high-profile tri-series against Pakistan and Afghanistan. The seven-match series will take place at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium from August 29 and run until September 7. The three teams will play each other twice in the six-match group stage. The top two teams will then compete in the final. The tournament is not only an opportunity for an in-form UAE team to test their mettle in the T20 format, but also a chance to prepare for the main event next month – the T20 Asia Cup. The UAE will host the Asia Cup tournament from September 9 where they will compete against the top teams in the format, which in turn serves as a build-up to the T20 World Cup early next year. In the Asia Cup, India and Pakistan are in Group A with Oman and hosts UAE. Group B comprises of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Hong Kong. The top two from each group there will qualify for the Super 4 stage where all four teams will play against each other. The top two teams will then go through to the final which will be held on September 28. Before that, the UAE team will lock horns with two powerhouses of T20 cricket, who have also played a large number of their matches in the UAE over the years. In the tri-series, Afghanistan take on Pakistan in the tournament opener. Match tickets and broadcast details for the tri-series will be announced over the next few days. The UAE are in fine form heading into the T20 tournaments. Under the captaincy of Muhammad Waseem, the national team famously defeated Bangladesh in a T20 series in Sharjah in May. Then, they took part in the Pearls of Africa T20 series in Uganda where they won four out of six matches.
