Ex-BBC journalist says covering Bloody Sunday sparked decades-long career

Peter Taylor, 82, from Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, subsequently dedicated a large portion of his working life to documenting events in Northern Ireland.
During the Troubles he interviewed republican and loyalist inmates in a notorious prison which he said had not been accessed before, or in the same way since.
He also tracked down and spoke to an MI5 officer who he said was 'central to getting the IRA to commit to peace' in a secret mission.
As he was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE), Mr Taylor told the Princess Royal that his first assignment in Northern Ireland was covering Bloody Sunday for ITV's This Week.
On January 30 1972, British soldiers shot dead 13 civil rights protesters on the streets of Londonderry.
Speaking to the PA news agency at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, after being honoured for services to journalism and public service broadcasting, he said: 'I remember being shocked at what happened and feeling guilty that I knew nothing, or very little, about the background to the conflict.
'I remember that day thinking I better start trying to find out, so I spent the past 50 years trying to do exactly that.'
It took him nearly 10 years of work to get permission to make a documentary inside the high-security Maze Prison housing paramilitaries, which is no longer in operation.
It was otherwise known as Long Kesh and was the site of 1981 hunger strikes.
People serving sentences for murder 'and a whole series of dreadful atrocities' were inside, Mr Taylor said, adding that he gained their trust to be interviewed.
The conversations were conducted without prison officers' oversight, he added.
At Windsor Castle, the former BBC journalist told PA: 'In the end, when they saw the film they were glad that they had taken part because it gave a different view of the contribution that they were potentially prepared to make towards peace.
'You know you've succeeded when you get that kind of reaction, when they're clearly expecting to take you to the cleaners for what you've done, and they say 'wasn't bad for a Brit'.'
He earned the trust of major figures including former IRA commander Martin McGuinness, whose funeral he attended, and Ian Paisley, previous leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), whose memorial he was invited to.
The aim was 'to get behind the mask' and that 'required them trusting me, but me trusting them to be as straight as they were prepared to be'.
'They knew I had a job to do, so when I asked really difficult questions – which in most cases they tried to answer, they knew that was part of my job – they didn't take it personally, but they knew what I was trying to do.'
Another major scoop was accessing the 'back channel between MI5 and the IRA' leadership.
The security service ran a secret mission designed to 'encourage the IRA to stop killing people and engage in the political process', he said.
The MI5 officer, unearthed by Mr Taylor and his team, was 'part and parcel' of that process.
He 'flatly denied' working for MI5 when Mr Taylor first approached, but the journalist left his calling card and a book he had written titled The Provos: The IRA And Sinn Fein.
Around 20 years after Mr Taylor first started working on the story, the officer wrote to him and said he had watched his documentary My Journey Through the Troubles.
'He said, if there are any gaps in your knowledge that you would like to sort out, I'm now prepared to talk to you.'
Mr Taylor travelled to interview him on the condition of anonymity.
Fewer programmes like Mr Taylor's are now made because of lack of funding, he said, adding that his did not attract 'huge viewing figures'.
'My worry is that public service broadcasting and the climate in which I grew up and learned my trade is under threat,' he told PA.
'It needs finances. What we do, people like me try and do, is to help people understand and make political choices and pass judgments on these extremely difficult, complex issues.'
The public's appetite is changing too, he said, adding: 'People just grow weary of bombs, mayhem, murder, bad news.'
Young people need to 'carry the torch onwards', which is 'a hard ask' because getting jobs and story commissions is increasingly difficult, he said.

Photo byIn exactly a month's time, the Green Party will be in the first moments of a new, or renewed leadership. The battle to lead the party will be passed into the hands of members this afternoon as a month-long period of voting opens (the winner will be announced on 1 September). Since May, candidates to take on the role – the MPs Ellie Chowns and Adrian Ramsay (who is a current co-leader) and the London Assembly Member Zack Polanski – have been locked in a head-to-head. This race comes at a defining moment for the Green Party, and more widely for the left. After winning four MPs in last year's general election (a record performance), the party could have the chance to capitalise on its victories in this new era of five party politics. And, with the imminent founding of a new left-wing party led by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, the future of the left hangs in the balance. Whichever candidate (or candidates) is successful, their leadership will define the party's place in British politics going forwards. Polanski fired the starting gun on this race when he announced his surprise (although not so to most party insiders) decision to run shortly after this year's local elections. His platform of 'eco-populism' has, in some ways, defined the campaign and its place in the wider political moment. Polanski, who is the party's current deputy leader, said in his leadership pitch that the Greens should occupy a more progressive, populist space on the left in order to confront the infectious populism of Nigel Farage's Reform. He has called for a wealth tax, a better approach to net zero and a more robust left-wing position on immigration. In doing so, he has captured the imagination of the former Corbynite left, some of whom have ditched their former Labour allegiances and become paid-up members of the Greens. The commentator and former NS columnist Grace Blakeley announced her defection to the party in order to vote for Polanski in June. This, insiders in his campaign believe, is reflective of wider increases in membership of the party: people have signed up to Green Party membership in order to vote for Polanski. (This mirrors those who took advantage of Labour's £3 membership deal to vote for Corbyn's leadership in 2015). 'I'm delighted,' Polanski told me, 'there's been a lot of focus on all the new members that have joined to vote for me.' He added: 'I'm feeling confident, but not complacent. I will be campaigning until the very last day of voting for every single vote.' (When asked, the Green Party said they would not share membership data during the election campaign.) Though it was clearly obvious Polanski was on manoeuvres, he did not inform Ramsay of his decision to run. Nor was Chowns aware of her now-opponent's intentions. The pair stepped forward as candidates shortly after Polanski's announcement, with Chowns stepping in to run as a co-leader, replacing Carla Denyer, the MP for Bristol Central who has been leading the party alongside Ramsay since 2021. Their campaign has focused on their ability to win first-past-the-post elections, and the pair have made clear the damage they think having a leader sitting outside of parliament would do to the progress the Green party has made. 'People really want a professional party that can win elections,' Chowns told me when we spoke over the phone shortly before voting opened. 'That's what Adrian and I are standing for. Members can vote for a leadership who knows how to win elections.' This has been a perennial criticism thrown at Polanski throughout the campaign: that as a London Assembly Member and not an MP, his leadership would provide a stumbling block for the Green Party's enduring progress. Jenny Jones, a party grandee and former deputy mayor of London, who is backing Ramsay and Chowns told me: 'I get on well with Zack, he's an excellent campaigner.' But she added: 'The reason I am voting for [Ramsay and Chowns] is because they are good at getting not only themselves elected, but getting other people elected'. But this is a moment of flux in British politics. As Labour has moved rightward in order to face-up to the ongoing threat of Reform, it has become more exposed on its left flank. Analysis by Stack Data Strategy and shared with the New Statesman found that Labour is losing more votes to its left than to the right. The founding of Corbyn and Sultana's party, and the increasing anger and frustration from left-wing voters over Gaza, has provided an opportunity for the Green Party. James Schneider, Corbyn's former director of strategic communications, said in a recent interview with the New Left Review that Corbyn and Sultana's party should be open to some form of red-green cooperation. Chowns and Ramsay have all but turned their backs on this idea: 'We have a really distinct identity as Greens,' Chowns told me. On the eve of voting opening, they criticised Polanski's eco-populist platform as 'chasing the next headline, the next set of likes, rather than real substance'. This has been an unprecedented campaign for the Green Party, not least because of the volume of media attention it has courted. But the outcome also bears wider political significance. A party led by Ramsay and Chowns would likely mean business as usual for the Green Party (beefed up local campaigning, and a focus on winning more seats). A victory for Polanski, however, would mark a new era for the party and more widely, for the left. In partnership with a new left party led by Corbyn, the Greens could do some serious damage to Labour's left flank. A 'Spellbinding' crime thriller based on a harrowing true story is finally free to stream on ITV. Canadian true crime drama Under The Bridge, based on Rebecca Godfrey's book of the same name, premiered on Hulu in April 2024. The eight-part series follows the true story and murder of a 14-year-old girl called Reena Virk. ITVX's synopsis reads: ' Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone star in this haunting drama inspired by a tragic true story. A writer and a cop investigate a brutal murder tied to a group of troubled teens.' It stars Lily Gladstone, Vritika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon "Wanna" Walton, Izzy G, Aiyana Goodfellow, Ezra Faroque Khan, Archie Panjabi and Riley Keough. Those who have watched the programme have hailed it '10/10' and 'binged it all at once'. Now fans will be happy to know that it has landed on ITV, so they can watch all the episodes online. Many have rushed to IMDb Under The Bridge unravels the heart-wrenching tale of Reena Virk who was attacked by eight teenagers - seven girls and one boy - at a gathering in Saanich in British Columbia, Canada, in 1997. The series is based on the 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, which chronicled the heinous bullying and murder of 14-year-old Reena. After the initial attack, she was allowed to stumble home but was followed by two of the original offenders - Warren Glowatski, 16, and Kelly Ellard, 15 - who continued the brutal beating before rolling Reena's unconscious body into a waterway. Reena was found dead by authorities eight days later with the killers tried as adults over the severity of their crime. Reena's family later started a campaign to bring awareness to bullying in schools and violence among teenagers. They were awarded the Anthony J. Hulme Award of Distinction for their work in 2009.

Andrew Bowie called for a review of policies affecting the oil and gas industry. The US president was in Scotland earlier this week and during his visit he described the North Sea as 'a treasure chest for the United Kingdom', and warned fossil fuel taxes make 'no sense'. He also took aim at 'some of the ugliest windmills you've ever seen', referring to wind turbines off the coast near Aberdeen. Mr Bowie has written to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer calling for a meeting in London to explore the effects of oil and gas policies. In his letter to Sir Keir, Mr Bowie wrote: 'As president Trump has said, the UK's 'very high' tax on oil and gas companies is a deterrent to investment. 'The extension of the energy profits levy (EPL), coupled with uncertainty around future licensing and investment signals, has created a climate of instability that threatens jobs, innovation and the region's economic resilience. 'President Donald Trump's remarks during your visit – calling Aberdeen the 'oil capital of Europe' and urging the UK to 'bring it back' – reflect a sentiment shared by many in the region. 'May I urge you to consider the president's call to 'incentivise' domestic production of hydrocarbons? 'Oil and gas still have a vital role to play in our energy mix and economic future; British people would rather see the UK benefit from domestic exploration and drilling than import more from Norway and Qatar.' Mr Bowie, who is the Conservative MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, added: 'Will you urgently call a meeting in Downing Street to conduct the review in partnership with industry leaders, our world-leading supply chain business, and the local workforce to ensure a coherent and sustainable path forward?' During his visit with Sir Keir, Mr Trump posted on his Truth Social website: 'North Sea Oil is a treasure chest for the United Kingdom. 'The taxes are so high, however, that it makes no sense. 'They have essentially told drillers and oil companies that, 'we don't want you'. 'Incentivise the drillers, fast. A vast fortune to be made for the UK, and far lower energy costs for the people.' Speaking at his Turnberry golf resort in South Ayrshire, Mr Trump said: 'When we go to Aberdeen, you'll see some of the ugliest windmills you've ever seen, the height of a 50-storey building.' Gesturing with his hands, he added: 'You can take 1,000 times more energy out of a hole in the ground this big.' Sir Keir at the time said oil and gas are 'going to be with us for a very long time, and that'll be part of the mix, but also wind, solar, increasingly nuclear'. Aberdeen has been chosen by the Government to host the headquarters of GB Energy, a state-owned company set up to accelerate the rollout of renewables.
