Form favours the King
Last week trainer Candice Dawson was extremely disappointed that she was forced to pull Chronicle King out of Race 2 at Turffontein.
Her charge had a bruised foot and that left her with little option but to give the son of Vercingetorix a break. Fortunately, Chronicle King has overcome that injury and he has been declared to line up in Race 2 on the Vaal Classic track on Thursday, a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1600m.
Chronicle King has only raced once, in a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1450m on the Turffontein Inside track. He was easy to back and went off at odds of 25-2, but that was mainly because Mike and Mathew de Kock-trained Whispering Death was sent off a 4-10 favourite after finishing an excellent second on debut.
Whispering Death, a half-brother to Grade 1 SA Derby winner Aragosta and six-time winner Mrs Browning, went on to win his next start as well, going off at 4-10 in that field over 1600m and beating Ideal Summer by 2.40 lengths. Even that form was franked as the Alec Laird-trained runner-up went on to win his next start by 3.25 lengths.

So overall, those look to be extremely potent form lines and that augurs well for Chronicle King.
What is even more relevant is the fact that Gavin Lerena has elected to ride Dawson's charge over the De Kock-trained Fire Starter, who he rode on debut and who he steered to a very encouraging third on debut. Lerena has also been aboard Whispering Death in his two victories so he clearly values the respective form lines.
In fact, Race 2 and Race 3 look the two races on the day to help build up a kitty for the rest of the meeting which does not look easy.
In Race 3, trainer Paul Matchett could be on the mark when he sends out Matcha Mint in a Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies over 1600m. This filly is a half-sister to Tyrconnell by Gimmethegreenlight and finished third on debut and followed that up with a second place in her next start.
Those two races were over 1160m and 1200m respectively and on breeding she should be looking for this kind of distance.
Matcha Mint will be assisted by the news that there are three scratchings in the race, Far Beyond, Fire On Fire and Opera Fan. Craig Zackey will be taking the ride this time and a TAB AllTo-Come bet on the pair, or a double, looks the way to go.

R10m Pick 6 ends season with a bang
It's also a World Pool day at Greyville. A Pick 6 with a likely pool of R10-million tops the betting menu at Sunday's Gold Cup race meeting at Greyville. It is a last chance to play for outsize payouts for a while as the fixture is a climactic send-off of the 2025 season. It's not just the Pick 6 that will draw in punters. The Quartet on the World Pool Gold Cup itself – South Africa's most important marathon race – is predicted to top R2-million, thanks to TAB bunging in a R500,000 carryover. As the big-race sponsor indicates, the meeting is a Hong Kong World Pool event. This means all TAB betting (accessible through Betway) on the card will be comingled into gigantic pools hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club and open to punters in racing centres around the world. The World Pool bets are Win, Place, Exacta, Quinella and Swinger. These bets must be in multiples of R2 – for example, R8, R10, R12 and so on. In addition to the Gold Cup, Race 7 on the card, four Grade 1 contests and five other feature events make up the 10-race bill of fare. The R1.5-million HKJC Champions Cup over 1800m is the headline grabber as it sees Durban July champion The Real Prince taking on Equus Horse of the Year Dave The King, who won the race last year. These two charismatic stars were level-pegging at 1.36 for the Win on Wednesday afternoon. The Mercury Sprint sees some of the country's best speedsters vying for a R1-million purse. The ante-post favourite here is Tenango at 1.40, with Mia Moo, I Am Giant and Buffalo Storm Cody jointly on offer at 2.00. The Douglas Whyte Thekwini Stakes (Race 4) honours the famous Durbanite who ruled the Hong Kong jockey championship for more than a decade and who now runs a successful training yard in the racing-mad enclave. Interestingly, the hot-pot favourite here is an uncommon raider from the Eastern Cape, Alan Greef-trained Golden Palm (1.05) to be ridden by champion jockey Richard Fourie. The filly goes for a fourth win in a row, within five months, and offers a potential banker for punters to kick off their assault on the R10-million Pick 6.

The Real Prince, the real deal: Hot favourite narrowly beaten in Durban July
The four-year-old gelding started at bookmaker odds of 14-1. Spectators celebrate during the Durban July main race on 2 July 2022. Picture: Jacques Nelles The Real Prince won the 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July at Greyville – just ahead of hot-pot 2-1 favourite Eight On Eighteen. Ridden by Craig Zackey and trained by Dean Kannemeyer, the four-year-old gelding started at bookmaker odds of 14-1, paid R10.30 a Win and R2.90 a Place on the TAB tote. It was Kannemeyer's fourth Durban July victory and a first for Zackey in South Africa's premier horse race. In third place was Selukwe (17-2), with Royal Victory (20-1) in fourth and Madison Valley (25-1) in fifth. This is a developing story

Explosive material detected at Greyville
There's plenty to get punters excited at this year's Durban July. The words 'bombs', 'dynamite', and 'have a full go' are blared out by the marketers of Saturday's Durban July race meeting at Greyville. Just hype? A glance at the massive sums of money on offer for a wide variety of wagers suggests that the fanfare is pretty apt. It's not just a huge R15-million Pick 6 mega-pool that's on the menu. The Quartet on the July itself, Race 7 on the card, is predicted to amass a pool of more than R10-million. Tote agency TAB has bunged in a carryover of R1-million to get the big-race Quartet started and popularity of the first-four-finishers prediction is expected to do the rest. A R500,000 carryover to Jackpot Three on the day is set to push that pool all the way to R3-million. That bet kicks off at 5.40pm in Race 9 on the 12-race programme. Often the third Jackpot at a major meeting is something of an underfunded afterthought; not this time! Money, money, money Jackpot One, which starts in Race 1 – off at 11.45am – is likely to have a pool of R750,000. Jackpot Two, starting in Race 5 on the card, will have R2-million for division among the winning tickets. The first leg of Bipot One is Race 2 at 12.25pm. The likely pool there is R750,000. Race 3 at 1.05pm is the first leg of the meeting's Place Accumulator, which is expected to garner a pool of R2.5-million. Race 4 at 1.40pm is the first leg of the R15-million Pick6. Race 7 is, of course, the Grade 1, 2200m Durban July, which carries a purse of R5-million for the successful horses' owners – and the aforementioned R10-million for winning Quartet punters. The July is a designated World Pool race of the Hong Kong Jockey Club – which means there is a common, comingled tote on certain bet types for punters around the world. This results in gigantic pools and very stable approximate dividends in the race preamble. 'Expect an Exacta pool of around R5-million, Win and Place pools exceeding R10-million each, and Swinger and Quinella pools of more than R10-million,' says operator Race Coast.
