5 Longshot 2025 Heisman Bets That Could Actually Hit
Think Johnny Manziel. Think Robert Griffin III, or even DeVonta Smith. If the pieces fall into place, these five under-the-radar quarterbacks could make serious noise in the 2025 Heisman race.
Don't be surprised if one of them crashes the party by November.
Kaidon Salter – Colorado
Salter arrives in Boulder after flashing real dual-threat ability at Liberty. Now, he'll be working under NFL veteran Pat Shurmur in an offense that should simplify reads and create opportunities for chunk plays. Salter's 2024 numbers weren't eye-popping-1,886 yards and a 15:6 TD–INT ratio-but that came in just 11 games and under constant pressure.
At Colorado, with upgraded weapons and national visibility under Deion Sanders, Salter is a textbook "system + spotlight" breakout candidate. If Colorado wins early, his name will surface pretty fast.
Sawyer Robertson – Baylor
Robertson quietly had one of the best seasons in the Big 12 in 2024. He threw for 3,071 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just 8 interceptions while leading Baylor on a six-game win streak. His top-5 QBR (83.7) tells the story that this guy was flat-out efficient. Jake Spavital's system fits him like a glove, and with most of the offensive core returning in Waco, Robertson has the tools and the structure to post Heisman-caliber numbers. He's not a name being tossed around yet-but that could change quickly.
Kevin Jennings – SMU
SMU's offense under Rhett Lashlee has quietly become one of the most productive systems in the country and Kevin Jennings is right in the middle of it.In 2024, Jennings completed 65% of his passes for 3,245 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while leading SMU all the way to the College Football Playoff in the program's first year as a Power 4 team.
Jennings also added mobility as a runner and proved he could go toe-to-toe with big-time defenses down the stretch.
Now entering 2025 with a playoff run behind him and the spotlight of the ACC schedule ahead, Jennings is poised to take another step. If he can clean up the turnovers and lead SMU to another 10+ win season, he could follow the Michael Penix Jr. blueprint-efficient, experienced, overlooked until suddenly in the thick of the Heisman conversation by November.
Marcel Reed – Texas A&M
Reed is one of the most interesting breakout candidates in the country. The former top-15 dual-threat QB out of Nashville saw action in 10 games as a sophomore at A&M last season, going 121-of-198 (61.1%) for 1,864 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He also showed flashes as a runner, keeping defenses honest.
What stood out is his composure and decision-making for a young quarterback. With a good offensive system under Collin Klein and a clear path to the starting job, Reed could explode, especially if A&M's talent finally clicks in the SEC.
Jalon Daniels – Kansas
When healthy, Daniels is electric. That's always been a question. Still, his leadership, and ability to create off-script give him legitimate Heisman upside. With a strong O-line, talented receivers, and a creative staff, Kansas is built to win shootouts under new offensive coordinator Jim Zebrowski.
Daniels has posted multiple 300-yard games against top-tier Big 12 defenses. If he stays upright and the Jayhawks stay hot, he's the kind of experienced, stats-heavy quarterback voters love.

The Walter Camp preseason first-team All-American has been named to the 2025 Walter Camp player of the year Watch List. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. The 6-foot, 206-pound Fighting Irish junior ran for 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2024, and he caught 28 passes for 237 yards and two receiving scores. Included in those numbers is his school record-tying 98-yard touchdown run on the third play of the first-round College Football Playoff game against Indiana. As Houston aims to push deeper into the postseason in 2025, here's a complete look at the Texans' 2025 preseason schedule, including dates, times and TV channels. Houston Texans 2025 Preseason Schedule Check out the team's preseason schedule below: Jalen Hurts ranked ninth in NFL's Top 10 QB list behind Justin Herbert and Jayden Daniels | The Facility James Jones explains why it is "awful" to rank Jalen Hurts the ninth-best QB in the NFL behind Justin Herbert and Jayden Daniels. How will the Texans do this season? Ben Arthur predicts that the Texans will finish the year at 9-8. Here's Arthur: "The Texans' Super Bowl-caliber defense has gotten even better this offseason with the addition of former Eagle C.J. Gardner-Johnson , who had six interceptions last season. But Houston's offense is still filled with question marks. Its revamped offensive line looks underwhelming on paper, and, outside of Nico Collins , quarterback C.J. Stroud is expected to lean heavily on rookie receivers. That could mean some tough sledding with a first-place schedule, against opponents like the Bills and Bucs at home and the Chiefs, Rams and Ravens on the road. The Texans should be the team to beat in the AFC South once again, but they remain a step below true contention in the conference." share Get more from the National Football League Follow your favorites to get information about games, news and more

Ohio State QB Julian Sayin on leaving Alabama, competing at OSU, Will Howard's mentorship
Presumed Ohio State starting quarterback Julian Sayin recently joined On3's 'Off Script' with host Zak Herbstreit to reflect on his first year and a half in Columbus. Sayin spoke about taking on more of a behind-the-scenes role last season, using the opportunity to learn from College Football Playoff national championship-winning quarterback Will Howard. 'I think I learned a lot last year,' said Sayin. 'Learning from Will, just learned, you know, how to be a leader. He was a great leader for the offense and for the team, and, you know, I think that was definitely something I tried to learn from him. And, definitely learned a lot also from Will. You know, just learning about the preparation aspect and, you know, how much preparation goes into each week." Coming out of high school, Sayin was a five-star recruit and ranked as the No. 2 quarterback in the nation. He originally committed to Alabama, but after the retirement of legendary head coach Nick Saban, Sayin made the decision to transfer to Ohio State. In the interview, he also opened up about his thought process behind leaving Tuscaloosa and choosing to continue his journey in Columbus. 'When I ended up going to Alabama, I wanted to go play for Coach Saban," Sayin said. "And when he retired, I decided to transfer and Ohio State was just a big decision for me and I was excited to make it just because of the quarterback development history they've had with Coach Day.' 'The guys like Justin Fields, CJ Stroud come before and they've done a great job with quarterbacks and then just the talent they have at the offensive skill positions," continued Sayin. "It was definitely a great decision for me and I couldn't be happier." Sayin is still locked in a quarterback competition with Lincoln Kienholz for the starting job as the Buckeyes prepare to open their season against the Texas Longhorns on August 30. However, the redshirt sophomore carries himself with a calm confidence, shaped by last year's championship run, where he learned behind veteran Will Howard, and by the Buckeyes' storied tradition of quarterback development.
