BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Magistrate's Court recently sentenced a local man to 15 months' imprisonment after finding him guilty of assaulting a man and causing property damage during an incident last year.
Ezzeddin Abdul Rahman faced two charges — voluntarily causing hurt to the male victim by punching him on the right side of his head, and committing mischief by using a slingshot to shoot a nut at the front glass window of the victim's house, resulting in BND1,900 in damages.
During the trial, Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Musawwir Haji Mahli produced eight witnesses, including the victim and his daughter, who were eyewitnesses to the incident.
Their accounts were corroborated by CCTV footage showing the defendant damaging the property before attacking the victim.
A medical report confirmed injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.
The defendant, in his defence, denied the charges and claimed he acted in self-defence, also alleging that his police statement was made under duress.
However, the court found his explanations contradictory, inconsistent, and implausible.
Magistrate Qamarul Affyian Abdul Rahman ruled that the prosecution had proven both charges beyond reasonable doubt, preferring their evidence over the defendant's testimony.
In delivering the sentence, the court emphasised that the offences involved violence and intentional property damage, warranting a custodial sentence. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN

Meghalaya honeymoon murder: New bride devised two plans to kill husband, bad weather forced her to shelve ‘plan A', switch to ‘plan B'

FILE photo. Sonam Raghuvanshi with husband Raja (left), and Sonam Raghuvanshi after arrest (right). NEW DELHI: Sonam Raghuvanshi, who allegedly killed her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during her honeymoon in Meghalaya just days after their wedding on May 11, had reportedly devised two plans to execute the cold-blooded murder. According to Meghalaya police, Sonam and her aides killed Raja as their initial plan had to be shelved due to bad weather. Sonam had arrived in Shillong on May 22, the day they originally planned to kill Raja. The three killers were also supposed to reach the location Sonam shared with them the same day. Plan A, according to the investigators, was that Sonam would take Raja to a mountain during a trek and then push him off while taking a selfie to make it look like an accidental death. However, due to rain, they could not go for the trek and Sonam switched to plan B. On May 23, Sonam and Raja went with their planned trek, and the three hired killers met them midway. This was also confirmed by a local guide, who told the police that he saw the three men accompanying the couple and speaking in Hindi. Sonam feigned being tired of the journey and started walking behind. It is being suspected that Sonam's mother-in-law also called them around the same time and that is why Sonam made up stories that it was Raja who forced her to go to the mountain and disconnected the call without letting the mother suspect anything wrong. As per some reports, when they reached the top of the mountain, Sonam, who was walking behind, shouted, 'Kill him'. Subsequently, one of the hired killers, Vishal Chouhan, attacked Raja with a sharp weapon, first from behind and then from the front. The three men and Sonam then pushed him into a deep gorge. After the murder, Sonam and the hired killers reportedly regrouped at another location some 11 km away from the crime scene to plan their escape. After the murder, Sonam travelled back to Indore by train via Siliguri and stayed there at a rented room, said a report. She then went to Varanasi in a cab, reportedly arranged by her suspected lover Raj Kushwaha. From there, she went to Ghazipur, which is also the hometown of her boyfriend Raj, and was subsequently arrested by the police. The police have arrested all five accused – Sonam Raghuvanshi, her lover Raj Kushwaha, and the three hitmen, Vishal Chouhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi. They have all been remanded to transit custody of the Meghalaya police. - The Statesman/ANN

Jail for causing death of Sabah courts head

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Sun, 42, was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. SIBU: A Chinese national who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving resulting in the death of Sabah State Courts director Marutin Pagan, was Tuesday sentenced to five years' imprisonment and fined RM20,000, in default three months' jail, by the Magistrate's Court here. Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad, to whom the case was previously reassigned, ordered that Sun Xue Song's jail term take effect from the date of his arrest on March 30. Advertisement Sun, 42, was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. Rosli said the court took into account the accused's plea of guilt, the circumstances of the offence, mitigation presented and the broader public interest. 'I accept the accused's guilty plea and convict him as charged. After considering all circumstances, I sentence him to five years' imprisonment from the date of arrest and a RM20,000 fine, in default three months' imprisonment,' he said. The court also ordered that Sun be disqualified from holding a driving licence for five years from the date of the charge and for his passport to be returned upon completion of his sentence. In mitigation, Sun's counsel Terence Tiong Ing Jie submitted that the accused, an engineering graduate, had lawfully entered Malaysia for employment to support his 70-year-old mother and seven-year-old son. He further noted that the accused had no prior convictions, had fully cooperated with the authorities, voluntarily surrendered himself following the accident and expressed sincere remorse over the victim's death. 'The accused made a bereavement payment of RM70,000 to the deceased's wife, not as an attempt to seek leniency but as a sincere act of compassion,' said Tiong. The court was also informed that the collision occurred along a known accident-prone stretch of Jalan Kanowit-Durin. According to the statement of facts, the incident occurred on March 30 at approximately 1 pm when the accused was driving a Proton X70 along Jalan Kanowit-Durin towards the Kanowit roundabout. At the same time, a Toyota Fortuner driven by Margaretha Jeramy Marutin, with four passengers, including the deceased, Marutin Pagan, was already navigating the roundabout. Sun failed to stop and give way at the designated road markings and dangerously entered the roundabout, resulting in a collision which caused the Fortuner to overturn and land on its side outside the roundabout. Marutin sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to Kanowit Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as 'head and chest injuries due to a road traffic crash.' Sun initially claimed trial on April 7 before Magistrate Romario Jonoi but changed his plea to guilty during pre-trial case management on May 16. The case was initially handled by Magistrate Oon Kork Chern, who later recused himself due to a personal acquaintance with the deceased. The matter was then reassigned to Judge Rosli Ahmad. Deputy Public Prosecutor Cynthia Emmelda Jerry conducted the prosecution. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
