SMK Wallace Bay upgraded for a better learning experience
TAWAU: After years of studying in rundown facilities, students of SMK Wallace Bay on Pulau Sebatik here finally have a reason to smile – two brand-new double-storey blocks, complete with 12 classrooms, an administration block and a surau are now ready for use.
The new buildings were launched by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek ( pic ) during her two-day working visit to the Kalabakan parliamentary constituency, as part of the parliamentary follow-up action programme, which began on Thursday.
SMK Wallace Bay is one of 230 schools out of 390 identified as dilapidated in Sabah that have already been rebuilt, said Fadhlina.
She said the redevelopment of the school reflects the government's serious commitment to providing a comfortable and conducive learning environment for students and teachers in rural areas.
For SMK Wallace Bay principal Jumaan Mahmud, the new school buildings are more than just upgraded infrastructure – they represent renewed hope and ambition for the younger generation on Pulau Sebatik.
'This transformation shows the government's dedication to rural communities, especially here in Sebatik. SMK Wallace Bay has a long history, having first opened on Feb 4, 1974,' he said, Bernama reported.
He also thanked the ministry for recognising the unique challenges faced by students on the island, including difficulties in commuting and the risk of school dropouts due to geographical barriers.
To address these issues, the government has approved the construction of a new school hostel under the 12th Malaysia Plan, with capacity for 200 students.
The hostel is expected to make a significant difference for students from remote villages such as Kampung Sungai Tongkang and Mentadak, many of whom face long and difficult journeys to attend school due to the island's terrain and limited transport options.
During the visit, Fadhlina also announced an additional allocation of RM200,000 to upgrade essential facilities at SMK Wallace Bay, including the science lab and canteen.
She also visited SMK Mentadak Baru, also located on Pulau Sebatik, and Kampung Serudung Laut, Kalabakan, accompanied by ministry officials and Kalabakan MP Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy.
On another matter, Fadhlina said a special initiative, ProKhas, has been launched in Kampung Serudung Laut, to provide children in the remote village access to education.
'The ministry identified a group of children here who lack formal education. After discussions with parents and the local community, we assured them the issue would be addressed.
'Through ProKhas, classrooms and teaching staff will be provided, along with essential schooling support,' she said.
Meanwhile, village chief Ronny Akai shared that the informal class has been operating for about a month in the village church, under the Social Welfare Department's early childhood development programme.
Ronny expressed hope that the children in the village would be able to receive better education locally, saying that only education could ensure a brighter future.
Access to Kampung Serudung Laut requires a sea journey of up to three hours or a four-hour drive from Tawau, depending on conditions.

Gaza-bound Aid Flotilla With 12 Activists On Board Nears Gaza Coast Despite Israeli Warning
A drone view shows the Gaza-bound aid ship Madleen, organised by the international NGO Freedom Flotilla Coalition, anchored off the coast of Catania, Italy, on June 1, 2025. REUTERS/Danilo Arnone ANKARA, June 8 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The aid ship "Madleen" has entered Egyptian waters on its way to Gaza, despite Israel's stated intention to prevent it from docking, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported citing the International Committee for Breaking the Siege on Gaza announced Sunday. The committee, one of the aid flotilla organisers, said in a statement that the ship has passed through Alexandria, northern Egypt, and will "in hours reach Mansoura city... en route to Gaza." "The coming hours will be most critical," the statement read. bootstrap slideshow The ship also has 12 activists on board, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham. Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament who is also on board the vessel, posted a live photo update on her X account. Last week, Israeli state broadcaster KAN reported that Tel Aviv had reversed its initial decision to allow the ship to pass. The approval was withdrawn under the pretext of "setting a precedent" for future humanitarian aid missions. The ship is carrying urgently needed supplies for the people of Gaza, including baby formula, flour, rice, diapers, women's sanitary products, water desalination kits, medical supplies, crutches, and children's prosthetics, according to its organisers. Another ship operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Conscience, was targeted by drones off the coast of Malta on May 2. Israel, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,800 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's more than 2 million inhabitants.

Many opportunities for Asean amidst US' tariff tantrum, says Asean-BAC head

Indonesia and EU are close to finalising major trade pact
JAKARTA (Bernama): Indonesia and the European Union are moving closer to finalising a major trade deal, with substantive negotiations on the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) nearing completion, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said. He said the agreement has entered its final phase after nearly a decade of negotiations, with both sides aiming to conclude discussions by the end of June. "This is an important milestone in today's unpredictable global economy and highlights the need for strong international cooperation,' he stated in a statement. Airlangga met with EU Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič in Brussels on Friday. The two sides agreed to resolve remaining issues and finalise a deal encompassing trade, sustainable growth, and environmental standards, with a key breakthrough on the long-contentious sustainability framework. Airlangga also urged the EU to grant preferential access for Indonesian fishery products and welcomed signals of flexibility on deforestation rules for countries with existing trade agreements. Bilateral trade between Indonesia and the EU reached US$30.1 billion in 2024, with Jakarta posting a surplus of US$4.5 billion an increase from US$2.5 billion the previous year. Talks on the IEU-CEPA began in 2016 but have faced delays over regulatory and environmental concerns, with a final deal set to strengthen economic ties between South-East Asia's largest economy and the 27-member bloc. - Bernama
