Gen AI single most transformative force of 2024: TCS' N Chandrasekaran

Tata Sons and TCS Chairman N Chandrasekaran has singled out generative AI (Gen AI) as the most transformative force in 2024, achieving near-human reasoning capabilities and redefining analytics, customer experience, and marketing.
'Gen AI is not just another tech cycle, it is a civilisational shift. Its widespread adoption is accelerating, powered by parallel advances in semiconductors, cloud computing, quantum technologies, robotics, and energy innovation,' he wrote in a letter to shareholders as part of TCS' latest annual report.
TCS is pursuing four strategic vectors to establish itself as a leader in this AI-first world. These include creating a large pool of AI agents to work alongside employees, delivering solutions through a human-plus-AI model, investing in AI data centres and cloud infrastructure, and forging industry-best partnerships with hardware providers, solution innovators, and start-ups.
'This integrated approach will help us bring the best capabilities to every customer, ensuring they are future-ready, resilient, and competitive. We remain steadfastly committed to leading the industry with purpose, innovation, and responsibility,' he added.
Companies across the technology ecosystem and broader businesses are putting in place AI adoption strategies, refining their proprietary data to better harness results, and integrating AI and AI agents into their systems to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Chandrasekaran cautioned that, to lead in this new world defined by AI, the IT industry must evolve. Many traditional IT business services are now rapidly being automated, including coding and testing, which are reshaping the software development life cycle. Agentic AI is also being deeply embedded into enterprise systems.
'TCS is proactively leading this change. We have systematically infused AI across our offerings and built intelligent agent solutions throughout the value chain. In 2025, we will have the largest AI-trained workforce in the industry and have launched our enterprise-grade Gen AI platform: TCS WisdomNext,' he added.
Earlier this week, TCS said it would split its AI.Cloud business into two separate units to drive higher growth in its artificial intelligence cloud business. The company is actively hiring AI experts from the market while also enhancing internal capabilities by updating training programmes for existing employees.

TCS' 34% share price crash from peak hits LIC portfolio — ₹27,000 crore wiped out

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT services company, has seen its stock price tumble to levels not witnessed in the recent past as weak earnings in the June quarter and its plans to lay off 2% of its workforce, around 12,000 jobs in the ongoing fiscal year, have made it one of the worst-performing blue-chip stocks. In fact, TCS shares have been on a downward trend since hitting an all-time high of ₹ 4,592 apiece in August 2024, amid growth concerns in key markets such as the US and Europe, brought down by Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs on major trading partners. The decline was further accelerated after the release of June quarter figures, which fell short of Street estimates, also triggering the brokerage firms to lower the target multiple for the stock. In July alone, TCS stock shed 12% of its value, its second-biggest monthly drop of 2025 and continued to face selling pressure in early August. On Monday (August 04), the Tata group stock fell below the ₹ 3,000 mark for the first time since October 2022 to reach ₹ 2991.60 apiece. At current levels of ₹ 3,045, the TCS stock is trading at a 34% discount to its August peak, with the crash erasing ₹ 5.56 lakh crore from the company's market capitalisation and making as one of the worst performers among group stocks in the current year so far. LIC is one of the largest shareholders in the company, holding a 4.86% stake at the end of the June quarter, as per the BSE shareholding data. The crash has also caused the insurance behemoth's investment value to drop by nearly ₹ 27,000 crore. Meanwhile, the company missed June quarter revenue estimates as clients remained cautious about non-essential spending amid U.S. tariff-related uncertainty. Its revenue rose 1.3% YoY to ₹ 63,437 crore, while net profit increased 5.9% to ₹ 12,760 crore. The brokerage expects weak performance to continue in the remaining period of FY26, citing persistent macroeconomic pressures, delayed project ramp-ups, and subdued discretionary spending that continue to weigh on demand. Anshul Jain, Head of Research at Lakshmishree, said, 'TCS has slipped to the major support zone of ₹ 3,018, but the charts show no sign of a bullish reversal or constructive structure forming. Price action remains weak, and volumes are unconvincing, indicating a lack of strong buying interest. Without evidence of accumulation, the probability of a sustained rebound from this zone is low.' "We expect the stock to eventually give up the ₹ 3,000 level and head towards the monthly swing low of ₹ 2,682. This remains the next key support area and a likely near-term target unless a high-volume reversal changes the current negative bias," he further added.

Tata Capital Launches Roadshows Ahead of Rs 17,000 Crore IPO

Last Updated: Tata Capital IPO: Tata Capital begins IPO roadshows, aiming to raise over Rs 17,000 crore. Tata Capital IPO: IPO-bound Tata Capital has kicked off a series of institutional roadshows to engage with both global and domestic investors, sources told Moneycontrol. The move comes as the company gears up for its highly anticipated initial public offering, which is expected to be sized at over Rs 17,000 crore. Tata Capital had earlier filed an updated confidential draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) for its much-anticipated initial public offering (IPO). Tata Sons is expected to offload up to 23 crore shares in the offer for sale (OFS), while International Finance Corporation (IFC) may sell 3.58 crore shares. The IPO will also include a fresh issue of up to 21 crore shares. The move is in line with the Reserve Bank of India's directive requiring all 'upper layer' non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) to go public by September 2025. Tata Group's financial services firm Tata Capital has reported strong financial performance ahead of the listing. In the March 2025 quarter, the company's consolidated profit after tax (PAT) surged 31% year-on-year to Rs 1,000 crore, while revenue from operations jumped nearly 50% to Rs 7,478 crore. For the full FY25, PAT rose to Rs 3,655 crore from Rs 3,327 crore in FY24, and total revenues climbed to Rs 28,313 crore from Rs 18,175 crore. In April 2025, Tata Capital filed draft papers with markets regulator Sebi to launch its initial public offering. The draft papers for the $2-billion IPO was filed through a confidential pre-filing route. At this size, the company is expected to be valued around $11 billion. Tata Capital, identified by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as an upper-layer non-banking finance company (NBFC), has already secured board's approval to proceed with the initial share sale. Notably, Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Capital, owns a 92.83 per cent stake in the company. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
