Who's in, who has work to do to make the top 70 for 2025 FedEx Cup Playoffs?

Yahooa day ago
The race is on to the 2025 FedEx Cup Playoffs.
There are just four events left (two this week) over the next three weeks for players to stay or get inside the top 70.
That's the new rule in 2025, only the top 70 players earn playoff spots. The three FedEx Cup Playoff events are the same: the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, the BMW Championship, played this year at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, and then the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, where a new format will be used this season.
FedEx Cup stadings Nos. 1-5
Just a slight change at the top of the standings with Thomas and Henley flipping spots.

Scottie Scheffler

Rory McIlroy

Sepp Straka
4
Justin Thomas
5
Russell Henley
FedEx Cup standings Nos. 26-30
Top 30 is actually the key place to be as only the top 30 advance to the Tour Championship. The last five in for the top 30 looks like this:
Position
Name
26
Daniel Berger
27
Sungjae Im
28
Ryan Fox
29
Brian Campbell
30
Jacob Bridgeman
FedEx Cup standings Nos. 46-50
To make the second leg of the playoffs at the BMW, golfers need to be inside the top 50.

Bud Cauley

Joe Highsmith
48
Jordan Spieth
49
J.T. Poston
50
Max Greyserman
FedEx Cup standings Nos. 61-70
But you can't make East Lake or the BMW if you don't first make it to Memphis for the St. Jude. Here's the last five in for a top-70 spot:
Position
Name
66
Matti Schmid
67
Emiliano Grillo
68
Davis Thompson
69
Eric Cole
70
Alex Smalley
So that makes Smalley this week's bubble boy. He was No. 70 in the official rankings a week ago as well.
FedEx Cup standings Nos. 71-75
And here's the first five out, with Rickie Fowler, playing in the Open Championship this week, the first one on the wrong side of the line. He was 68 a week ago. It's not an unfamiliar position for Fowler, who was hovering around the top 100 cutoff mark a year ago. He's 30 or so spots better this year but because of the reduction to 70, he's walking a fine line once again.
Position
Name
71
Rickie Fowler
72
Chris Kirk
73
Gary Woodland
74
Kevin Roy
75
Christiaan Bezuidenhout
Movers up and down in the latest FedEx Cup Playoffs standings
Like Fowler, Chris Kirk has slid from inside the top 70 to out. Kirk was 69th a week ago and now he's 72nd. With someone sliding out, someone else slides in and that someone this week is Matt Fitzpatrick, who went from 73rd to 60th in the standings after a tie for fourth at the Genesis Scottish Open on Sunday.

Woad leads Korda at Scottish Open as Lee slips back

Lottie Woad, competing in her first tournament as a pro, holds a two- stroke lead over world No.1 Nelly Korda at the midway point of the Women's Scottish Open, but Australia's Minjee Lee has fallen back. World No.5 Lee was lying joint-third after a steady first-round 68, but a score of 74 on Friday saw her slump down the order to join a group of nine players sharing 29th place on two under at Dundonald Links in Ayrshire. Fellow Australian Cassie Porter carded a second consecutive round of 70 and stands two shots above Lee on four under, but eight shots behind leader Wood. Woad, 21, carded a 7-under 65 on Friday to move to 12-under. She was the No.1 amateur in the world before turning pro after a tied third finish at the Evian Championship two weeks ago. Korda and Denmark's Nanna Koerstz Madsen both shot 66 in the second round and are tied for second at 10-under. Sei Young Kim (67) is in solo fourth at 9-under and fellow South Korean Hyo Joo Kim (66) is another shot back in solo fifth. Woad collected seven birdies during a clean round, including birdies at all four par-5 holes. "Bogey-free is always nice," Woad said. "Hit a lot of greens ... a lot of fairways, and then holed a few nice putts." Woad's remarkable month began with a six-shot victory at the Women's Irish Open, which made her the first amateur to win on the Ladies European Tour since 2022. She finished 13-under at the Evian Championship the following week, one shot behind winner Grace Kim. Woad played the first two rounds with Korda, whose round Friday featured seven birdies and one bogey at the par-5 18th hole. Korda is still looking for her first win of the season, which includes a T2 at the US Women's Open, as players ramp up for next week's British Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl in Wales. "I started out strong with two birdies on my first two holes, and then the wind kind of died down throughout the day, so capitalised on the weather," Korda said. Defending champion Lauren Coughlin (70) is part of a seven-way tie for 12th at 4-under. First-round leader Charlotte Laffar of England plummeted into a tie for 91st place and missed the cut after a 10-over 82 on Friday.

Scottie Scheffler Clears Air on Awkward Noise at Open Championship

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A lot happened during the Open Championship, much of it starring Scottie Scheffler. After several days, now more in control of his emotions, the World No. 1 shocked the world with an unexpected revelation about one of the most hilarious situations of the week. It was none other than the fart heard on the 17th hole during the first round. As you may recall, the sound was heard loud and clear on the television broadcast, and fans have been wondering who was the protagonist of such an embarrassing moment. "Oh, yeah. That was me," Scheffler admitted on "Pardon My Take". Scottie Scheffler of the United States reacts after finishing his round on the 18th green during Day Three of The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club on July 19, 2025 in Portrush, Northern Ireland. MoreThe four-time major winner seemed hardly embarrassed by the matter and, in fact, said he was surprised something like this didn't happen more often during golf broadcasts. "You're out there for like six hours. You're eating some different food over there. Some stuff's going to happen," Scheffler told the hosts of the podcast. "You never know when the boom mic's there. You never know what they're going to pick up. I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened more in the past, picking up stuff like that. "But I literally didn't think anything about it. And then after we got inside, Xander (Schauffele) was showing me the video. He just pulled up the video and I see myself standing on 17. I was like, 'Oh, I know what this is.' " Scheffler also joked that, thanks to the wind, he wasn't the one who suffered the worst consequences of the viral moment. "No, we were outside, so I mean, breeze was blowing. Somebody else caught it (the smell). It wasn't me," he said during the podcast. This hilarious situation occurred during the second shot on the 17th hole of the first round. Scheffler made his fifth and final birdie of the day (two bogeys) there to finish at 3-under 68. It was the only night Scheffler slept outside the top spot on the leaderboard. A day later, he stormed to the lead carding a 64, and held on there with scores of 67 and 68 to win by a comfortable four-shot margin.
