Parker's manager says Paul vs Usyk 'would be a homicide'

Joseph Parker's camp has suggested a fight between heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and influencer Jake Paul would be a slaughter.
Paul has polarised the boxing world since venturing into the sport in 2020.
He has fought some of the biggest names in combat sport, his much maligned fight with Mike Tyson generated a $60 million purse for each man.
However, many have questioned the legitimacy of his fights, and his methods of promotion.
The former Disney star squared off with both Usyk and Parker following the Ukranian's impressive title defence against Daniel Dubois on Sunday.
Paul has since suggested a boxing bout with former champion Anthony Joshua and an MMA fight with Usyk.
Paul posted on social media "First AJ. Then OU. Book it. I respect you a lot. Now we do an MMA match for the world."
Usyk only fuelled the speculation when speaking to media.
"Jake Paul came to the ring for a face-off. I'm ready to fight with Jake Paul in MMA rules. I'm ready but I need to rest."
Parker's manager David Higgins has dismissed Paul as any sort of threat and said Parker had no interest in a bout with him.
"If Usyk fought Paul in a proper boxing match (it) will be a homicide, legally it shouldn't be allowed."
Despite exchanging respectful words in the ring, Parker's camp has shut down any speculation about a possible fight with Paul.
"It's silly stuff. I think it's more likely to see Anthony Joshua fighting Jake Paul," Higgins said.
"We're at the serious end of the business and Joseph wants to fight for the proper world title, none of that."

Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers. Photo: HARRY HOW / AFP The Los Angeles Lakers have signed five-time NBA All-Star guard Luka Doncic to a three-year, $165 million (NZ$279m) contract extension, securing the long-term future of one of basketball's brightest stars, the team announced on Saturday (local time). "I just signed my extension with the Lakers," Doncic wrote in a social media post. "Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. "This is just the beginning." Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka called it a "monumental moment" for the franchise. "Luka Doncic's future is with the Los Angeles Lakers," Pelinka said in a statement. "Luka is one of the game's most transcendent players, and his on-court dominance and passion is without compare." Doncic, 26, was acquired by Los Angeles in a blockbuster trade in February that sent Anthony Davis to the Mavericks in a move that stunned the sports world. Since joining the Lakers, he has averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.6 steals over 28 games to close the regular season, helping lift the Lakers to the third seed in the Western Conference. The Slovenian guard, who was the third overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, boasts career averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.2 assists across seven NBA seasons with the Dallas Mavericks and Lakers. Doncic, who has been selected five times to the All-NBA first team, led the league in scoring during the 2023-24 campaign with 33.9 points per game and recorded a career-high 73 points in a single contest. He ranks third all-time in regular season scoring average and has notched 82 career triple-doubles, fourth among active players. - Reuters

Former MMA fighter Conor McGregor loses appeal against civil rape case
Conor McGregor. Photo: INPHO Former mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Conor McGregor has lost his attempt to overturn a civil jury's order that he compensate a woman who accused him of raping her, with Ireland's Court of Appeal rejecting the bid in its entirety. The plaintiff, Nikita Hand, alleged that McGregor - one of the world's highest-paid athletes - sexually assaulted her in a Dublin hotel room on 9 December, 2018. A jury last year ordered McGregor to pay her nearly €250,000 in damages . McGregor, 36, denied the allegation and said he had "fully consensual sex" with Hand. The ex-Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star also denied causing bruising to the plaintiff. Hand last year said that she and a friend made contact with McGregor, who she knew, after a work Christmas party. She said they were driven by McGregor to a party in a penthouse room of a south Dublin hotel where drugs and alcohol were consumed. The verdict against McGregor was reached at the conclusion of a two-week civil trial in Ireland's high court, by a jury of eight women and four men. They handed down their decision after just over six hours of deliberations. Speaking outside the court in November last year after the initial verdict was handed down, Hand said she was overwhelmed by the support she had received and felt vindicated. "I hope my story is a reminder that no matter how afraid you might be, speak up," she said. The now-retired MMA star earnt $180 million in 2021, making him the world's highest paid athlete in 2021, according to Forbes. In March this year, McGregor was invited to the White House by United States President Donald Trump on St Patrick's Day, where the former UFC champion made various anti-immigration comments in relation to Ireland . "It's about time that America is made aware of what's going on in Ireland. What is going on in Ireland is a travesty," McGregor said, ahead of an Oval Office meeting with the US president. - Reuters

Lydia Ko six strokes off the pace at last major of year
Lydia Ko won the event last year when it was held at St Andrews. Photo: Brian Spurlock/Icon Sportswire / PHOTOSPORT New Zealand's Dame Lydia Ko is six strokes off the pace after the first round of the Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl in south Wales. Japan's Eri Okayama and Rio Takeda topped the leaderboard, with rounds of five-under 67, while Ko had a one-over 73 as she failed to take advantage of calm conditions on the coastal course. Fellow Kiwi Amelia Garvey is a stroke further back, in joint 91st place. Ko won the event last year at St Andrews, but it is her first time playing in Wales. She opened well enough in the final major of the year, with a birdie on the first hole but negated that with a bogey on the par-4 third hole. She had one more birdie, on the ninth hole, while dropping shots at the par-5 13th and the par-3 15th before finishing in a 17-way tie for 74th place. Garvey had birdies on the same two holes that Ko birdied, with four bogeys spoiling her round. Okayama's five-under 67 gave her the lead before she was joined by Takeda after she birdied the 18th, Reuters reported. Japanese players dominated the opening day with Miyu Yamashita at four-under ahead of a large group on three-under that included Chevron Championship winner Mao Saigo, Shiho Kuwaki and Chisato Iwai. World number one Nelly Korda finished two-under par. Okayama, who is world number 139, bogeyed her opening hole but birdied five of the next eight and was rock solid on the way back with another birdie at the 17th moving her ahead. Takeda recovered from a double-bogey seven at the ninth with four birdies on the back nine, putting her joint first. By far the largest galleries assembled just after lunchtime to watch England's Lottie Woad in a group alongside Ko and American Lilia Vu. An astonishing July, which culminated in Woad winning the Scottish Open in her first event as a professional, had made the 21-year-old favourite for the year's final major. But the former Florida State University player found the going tough as she ground out a level-par round of 72 thanks to a birdie at the last. - RNZ Sport/Reuters
