Watch Karl Urban's Johnny Cage Be a B-List Movie Star in This Faux Movie Trailer

Gizmodo16-07-2025
Ahead of the release of the official trailer for Mortal Kombat II, Warner Bros. sneakily released a spoof movie trailer to go along with its meta marketing for its leading man, Johnny Cage, played by The Boys star Karl Urban.
When Mortal Kombat first released back in 2021, fans of NetherRealm's long-running fighting game series collectively scratched their heads in confusion over one of its original characters, Johnny Cage, being absent from the film. As if overcorrecting from past mistakes, Warner Bros. has been leaning hard into advertising Cage as the central focus of its sequel film. Not missing a beat from announcing Star Trek, Dredd, and Lord of the Rings star Urban, Warner Bros. released a first look at the Hollywood actor-turned martial arts tournament contestant in a trailer for one of his in-universe films, Uncaged Fury.
One thing of note about the tongue-in-cheek trailer, which leans heavily into Cage's mystique as Mortal Kombat's resident actor, is that the above trailer isn't viewable on Warner Bros.' official YouTube page. The trailer, which is private on Warner Bros.' YouTube, can only be found on the website for Cage's in-universe action film, Uncaged Fury. How would you know to look for it there? Well, in the lead-up to Mortal Kombat II's official trailer release, Warner Bros did some sneaky internet marketing, creating an IMDb page for Cage, which lists a slew of films he's starred in, one of which being Uncaged Fury.
The more terminally online denizens of the internet found a link to the website for Uncaged Fury, which, upon clicking a still of Cage flipping the bird, whisked them to Warner Bros.'s private trailer. It's all as much of a headache as enduring one of the game's fatalities firsthand, so be thankful we spared you the trouble of scouring the internet to find a morsel of a glimpse at Cage ahead of Mortal Kombat II's official trailer release.

— Ed Boon (@noobde) July 15, 2025For those wondering why Warner Bros. would engage in such unconventional advertising, it all relates to Cage's role as Mortal Kombat's notable Hollywood A-list actor who becomes a contestant in the fighting tournament. This legacy has followed the character from the original 1992 video game to the present day. Any man willing to tattoo his last name across his navel deserves top billing for a fatality-filled battle that Mortal Kombat II is setting itself up to be with Cage as its central character.
'[Johnny Cage's] integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores,' Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. 'He's a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing. Karl, his depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways. He's adding his own flair to it, but I think it'll feel fresh. There's like a novelty factor in there.'
Mortal Kombat II releases October 24.

Liz Lee Says She's 'Squashed Beef' with Her Former 'My Life as Liz' Rival as She Plans a 'Nerd Herd' Reunion

'My Life as Liz' aired in 2010 and 2011 Liz Lee is getting some closure on a confusing period in her life. The artist, 34, who was at the center of the 2010 MTV series My Life as Liz, has recently talked about her brief time in reality TV on TikTok. In doing so, she's reconnected with some of her other classmates who appeared on the show, revealing she's even "squashed beef" with formal rival Cori Cooper. "I cannot relay to you guys how healing this has been. Without all of this renewed interest, I wouldn't have found her TikTok, where she started making TikToks about her experience. And it seems pretty awful, what she went through. I just felt so much empathy for her because we were both collateral damage from this machine." After Lee "slid into her DMs," she shared the two had "a really good talk" and encouraged fans to listen to her side of things. On Cooper's TikTok, she opened up about how, much like Lee didn't know she'd be at the center of the show, Cooper didn't know she'd be portrayed as a "villain." "It was very staged. It's not necessarily, it wasn't scripted, but I was told, 'Hey, say this,' 'Hey, do that,' 'Hey, be meaner.' It was just a lot of weird situations to be put in as a child by an adult," she shared. "Yes, I was 18. I signed my own contract. I didn't have to have my parents' permission. I have a lot of people that were, 'I can't believe your parents let you act that way and let you do that.' They didn't let me act any certain way, or do any certain thing. I was told that this was a show about high school life and what it's like to be in high school. And it was not." Cooper said that she didn't see the show until the rest of the world did, and she was "just as shocked" by how she was presented, adding "a lot of the stuff I filmed was never used." When commenters accused her of not taking accountability for her behavior, Cooper replied, "I actually never said that I didn't own it. I never said that I wasn't a bully. I just said that it wasn't... the show was very one-sided. There was stuff that went on, on both parties. I received a lot of backlash and again, I was never told, 'Hey, you're going to go be a bully,' or 'You're going to be made out to be the bad guy.' " Cooper says that she has "grown" from the experience, adding that at 34, she feels she doesn't deserve some of the backlash she gets. It appears that Lee's friends have also been thinking about the show since her TikToks have gone viral. In a video on July 22, Lee revealed that as part of her plan to watch and react to the series live on Twitch, members of "the nerd herd" would be joining her in an upcoming stream. "I reached out to Sully, Troy, Zona, Miles... those who were once affectionately referred to as 'the nerd herd,' the proud, the few. They are going to join me for live commentary on My Life is Liz on Twitch." The pseudo-cast reunion is likely on the slate for next week. In the meantime, Lee is working on getting Taylor Terry to also join in. "Even Cori said she'd be down, so stay tuned, " she concluded. Read the original article on People

What to Watch This Weekend (July 26-27): 9 Best New Movies and Shows to Stream Now (Including One That'll Take You Back to the '90s!)

Here's where to watch the top nine best movies and shows the weekend of July 26-27 If you're craving a walk down memory lane, this is the weekend for you: we've got a number of nostalgia hits this time around, and they're just getting started. This weekend, July 26-27, Netflix is throwing it back to the 1990s with the release of a sequel to a nearly 30-year-old movie. Over in theaters, one Marvel group of heroes is getting its third reboot in 20 years. Basically, it's a big week for fans of the "good old days." Not into revisiting the glory days of yore? All good, each streaming platform has something fresh for you, from a new installment of Netflix's Trainwreck docuseries to a frightening Hulu true crime about a dentist who murdered his wife on a safari. And there's more! Here's a list of the nine best new movies and shows to watch this weekend and where to stream them. The Fantastic Four: First Steps Pedro Pascal, welcome back to the big screen for the third time this summer. But this time around, it's for one of his biggest roles yet: Mr. Fantastic/Reed Storm. Joining him are Vanessa Kirby as the Invisible Woman/Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch/Johnny Storm and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/Thing. This chummy little family has a new storm (pun intended) coming for them when the humans they've sworn to protect with their magical abilities are threatened by the mysterious Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) and her boss, Galactus. Kicking off Marvel's phase 6, The Fantastic Four: First Steps reintroduces the beloved heroes after two previous iterations in less than 20 years. The Fantastic Four: First Steps releases in theaters on July 25. Happy Gilmore 2 If you're still wishing for a reboot of your favorite '90s movie, keep wishing because it just may come true! After 29 years, Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) is coming back to the green, golf club in tow. Not much has changed: he's still with Virginia Venit (Julie Bowen), has a tendency toward profanities and an aggressive attitude. But most importantly, he's still a beast at golf — and will need to put his skills to the test once again. Watch Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix. Trainwreck: P.I. Moms Every week, Netflix treats us to another juicy true crime or crazy case in its Trainwreck series, and this time is no different. In P.I. Moms., the streamer looks back at the group of moms who doubled as private investigators in a firm run by Chris Butler, a former cop. That is, until Butler was caught running a drug operation and many of his "private investigations" turned out to be staged. Watch Trainwreck: P.I. Moms on Netflix. Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari A successful dentist, an impatient mistress and a woman found dead in an African safari. It may sound like the plot of an Agatha Christie murder mystery, but it is actually the true story of Larry Rudolph's murder of his wife, Bianca, in 2016. Trophy Wife: Murder on the Safari delves into the details behind the murder, which was believed to be a tragic incident on a hunting trip until five years later, when suspicion began to turn onto Larry. Now, both Larry and his mistress are serving time. Watch Trophy Wife: Murder on the Safari on Hulu. Justice On Trial Judge Judy is back — and is just as ruthless as ever. In her new series, Justice on Trial, the famous judge and her legal team recreate notorious trials from history to evaluate whether following the law truly felt "just" in the outcomes. Watch Justice on Trial on Prime Video. The Hunting Wives Fans of women-led murder mysteries where a newcomer joins a squad of mysterious, secretly-crazy-party-ladies going behind their husbands' backs and getting up to nefarious deeds, this one's for you (crazy that's a genre, but it really is!). The Hunting Wives stars Brittany Snow as said newcomer, Sophie, who becomes enamored with her husband's boss' wife after she moves to East Texas from Cambridge, Mass. The two quickly form a tight bond, but when Sophia is suddenly in the throes of a gruesome murder, she begins to question her new friends. Watch The Hunting Wives on Netflix. Oh, Hi! Molly Gordon plays a crazy, obsessed woman who just wants Logan Lerman's character's love — and will go to any lengths to get it. And you know what? With that salt-and-pepper hair he's been sporting, so would we! Adding Lerman to our ever-growing list of internet boyfriends we are only too excited to see on the big screen, Oh, Hi! captures the worst and best aspects of a crush and the perfectly reasonable repercussions when one has been led on. Oh, Hi! releases in theaters on July 25. Acapulco season 4 In the fourth and final season of Acapulco, present-day Máximo (Eugenio Derbez) is working tirelessly to restore his resort, Las Colinas, to its former glory. Meanwhile, his younger self (Enrique Arrizon) is doing some espionage on another resort, which took the No. 1 ranking from his — and he's determined to take it back. Watch the first two episodes of Acapulco season 4 on Apple TV+. Billy Joel: And So It Goes Billy Joel is one of the American greats, so it's only fitting he gets a two-part HBO Max documentary dedicated to his life and legacy — featuring the Piano Man himself! The series dives into not only the singer's music catalogue and the stories behind the lyrics, but also his personal past struggles with substance abuse and mental health. Watch both parts of Billy Joel: And So It Goes on HBO Max. Read the original article on People

Paramount Global says Skydance merger should close in two weeks

(Reuters) -Paramount Global said on Friday it expects to complete its merger with Skydance Media by August 7, following government approval for the $8.4 billion deal. Skydance CEO David Ellison is prepared to assume the helm at Paramount, home to the venerable Paramount Pictures, the CBS broadcast network, and a collection of cable television channels. The new chief executive already is confronted with questions from investors about the future of the Paramount+ streaming service, plans for Paramount's declining television assets, and forecasts for spending on content -- including professional sports. "Now that the long, drawn-out sale process is finally nearing its end, Skydance leadership is poised to take control," wrote MoffettNathanson media analyst Robert Fishman. "With that, the real work begins -- rebuilding Paramount, addressing the critical strategic questions ahead, and charting a path toward a more sustainable and competitive future."
