GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING: AFL star Sam Butler posts stomach-churning photo of horrific injury that has kept him off the field for 418 days

Daily Mail2 days ago

AFL star Sam Butler has posted a stomach-churning image of his broken leg which saw the Hawthorn forward sidelined for over 400 days.
Butler, 22, broke both his fibula and tibia in a game for VFL side Box Hill on April 28 last year in horrific scenes.
Adding to the drama was Butler then having to wait half an hour for an ambulance to arrive and take him to hospital.
A few niggles late in the pre-season delayed the youngster's start to 2025, but he has been recalled by Hawks coach Sam Mitchell to play the Western Bulldogs in a blockbuster at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on Thursday night.
Butler, who has displayed his versatility by playing in the midfield for Box Hill in recent weeks, will look to help the Hawks avoid a fourth successive defeat.
Concerningly, they were hammered by premiership favourites Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions in their last two outings.
Mitchell has outlined what he desperately wants to see from his players more than any other against the Bulldogs.
'I just think it's pressure,' the coach said.
The Hawks were outclassed in the tackle counts against the Magpies and Lions, with the numbers - 82-38 and 59-36 - painting a grim picture.
'The winning tackle count is often not the winning team, but you can't get beaten the way we have been,' Mitchell added.
'Enabling the players to be able to put pressure on the opposition is going to be the most important thing for us.'
Meanwhile, Luke Beveridge's Bulldogs are bracing themselves for a fierce attack on the contest from a desperate Hawthorn side.
'You're always wary when a club's been under the microscope a bit and the way they galvanise and prepare for their next game,' he said.
'We've got to be ready for their intensity in this game, because it might be more explosive than what you're sometimes used to.
'That's our challenge in the bigger part of the platform to springboard into the back half of the year off a really good experience.
'It's a really critical game for both clubs.'

Conor Wallace is ready to ‘shoot for the stars' as he prepares for Dylan Colin fight

Conor Wallace will return to the ring this weekend to take on Dylan Colin as chief support to his stablemate Jai Opetaia vs Claudio Squeo in Australia. The Irish-born Aussie had a busy 2024, fighting three times. He outpointed Jerome Pampellone between two knockouts over Jack Gipp and Asemahle Wellem. Wallace has had a brief lay-off after having surgery on his hand but is happy for the time off and feels as though he will be back better than ever as he continues to rebuild from a loss to Leti Leti in 2021, which he avenged via knockout eighteen months later to get back on track. Wallace said: '[After a couple of hand surgeries] I've gone from strength to strength. Having that loss to Leti Leti - then rematching him and knocking him out is probably the best thing that could have happened. I got that loss out of the way, it made me hungrier. I wasn't an undefeated prospect anymore.' Dmitry Bivol vs Artur Beterbiev trilogy fight - with many top-ranked fighters waiting for their opportunity. Wallace is ranked number two by the IBF and number seven by both the WBC and WBO. He said the state of the division is frustrating for the top fighters at the moment due to the uncertainty surrounding the belts. But he doesn't want to focus on that - instead relishing the opportunity to fight again and stay ready for any opportunities that may come. He said, 'It's frustrating, we have done all this good work to get to number two in the IBF.' He added: 'It is what it is, all that stuff is out of my control. My job is to stay focused, and I've got a great team around me, and I'm happy to be given the chance to stay active' Having only fought in Australia so far, Wallace has gone through all the top opposition domestically at 175 lbs and is ready to take the next step to fight internationally because he has nothing left to prove at the national level. Wallace said: 'I can't get any higher [ranked] than I am without fighting an international opponent. I've taken the risk many times in Australia with Jack Gipp and even fought the South African guy [Asemahle Wellem]. I've got everything to lose and nothing to gain in those fights.' He continued: 'We are happy to go wherever for the big fights, we have done all the hard work to get into the position I am now, so the main thing is to beat whoever they put in front of me, and no matter where that is, we will go.' The Aussie said he will fight anyone to achieve his world title dream sooner rather than later, and is not overlooking Colin, but represents the next step on his journey to the top of the light-heavyweight division. Wallace said: 'My goal is to win a world title, and I'll fight whoever for that.' He added on his future: 'There is only so long you can wait. Hopefully, everything goes to plan. I'm not overlooking this opponent, but hopefully we can get through him, and hopefully we can get a big fight towards the end of the year. You've got to shoot for the stars.'

Ange Postecoglou breaks silence on Tottenham sacking after he was dismissed despite winning the club's first trophy in 17 years

Ange Postecoglou has broken his silence on his sacking by Tottenham after he was relieved as boss on Friday. 'When I reflect on my time as Manager of Tottenham Hotspur my overriding emotion is one of pride,' the Australian wrote in a statement shard by his representatives. 'The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. 'That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. 'We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. 'I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. I know there were some difficult times but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. 'And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. 'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere.'

Fabio Wardley vs Justis Huni predictions: Boxing tips and odds

Our boxing tipster Dan Fitch has predictions for Saturday's fight between Fabio Wardley and Justis Huni at Portman Road, Ipswich (ring walks, 10pm). They include a knockout victory for Wardley in a bout that has the WBA interim heavyweight title on the line. Wardley vs Huni tips Fabio Wardley to win in rounds 7-12 @ 11/5 with talkSPORT BET Fabio Wardley, Mike Perez and Pierce O'Leary all to win @ 5/6 with talkSPORT BET Odds courtesy of talkSPORT BET correct at the time of publication and subject to change. Wardley can inflict Huni's first defeat Both Fabio Wardley and Justis Huni have unbeaten records, but it is the Ipswich-born boxer who has the advantage of fighting on home turf and boasts an impressive record of stoppages. Of the 30-year-old's 19 fights, 17 have been won by KO. The only exceptions have been a points victory in his first contest back in 2017 and a draw in his first fight against Frazer Clarke, which he brutally avenged with a stunning first-round knockout victory in last year's rematch. Wardley was a latecomer to boxing, turning professional after just four white-collar fights. This lack of amateur pedigree was evident in the first meeting with Olympic medallist Clarke and Huni will be aiming to outbox the favourite and record a surprise points victory. The Australian only has two notable names on his 12-0 record in the form of Andrew Tabiti and Kevin Lerena. Both were small for heavyweights, having previously campaigned at cruiserweight. Lerena is at least a puncher and he had Huni's legs wobbling in the 10th round of their fight last year, but lacked the energy to finish off his opponent. If Wardley gets such a chance he will make no such mistake. His fast right hand can set up such opportunities and when he smells blood he is a deadly finisher, as he proved in that rematch against Clarke, when he broke his opponent's jaw. Huni may well have some early success and can win rounds, but eventually the home fighter will land cleanly. When that happens, I expect Wardley to be decisive and I am backing a stoppage win in the second half of the bout. Treble looks to be a banker The undercard to the main event features Mike Perez's cruiserweight contest against Steven Ward, with the Cuban a strong favourite to win, having campaigned at a much higher level during his long career. Pierce O'Leary is another fighter expected to have his hand raised, with the unbeaten Irishman facing Liam Dillon in a European super-lightweight title match. talkSPORT BET has boosted the odds of a treble on wins for Perez, O'Leary and Wardley to 5/6 and it looks to be something of a banker that offsets the risk taken with our first bet.
