NEW DELHI: Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has suspended four officials after controversy erupted over an old rake with dirty coaches being provided to transport BSF personnel from Tripura to J&K, for deployment during the Amarnath Yatra.

"The train's rake was changed. And action has been taken. Four officials responsible for the lapse have been suspended," Vaishnaw said Wednesday.
Railway ministry stated: "The railway minister said the dignity of security forces is paramount and such negligence will not be tolerated at any level. An enquiry has also been ordered, so that such lapses don't recur". The coaching depot officer and three senior section engineers of Alipurduar division were suspended.
"Another train was used for transportation of BSF personnel," said an official.
Earlier in the day, after social media users, reacting to videos that surfaced online, criticised Railways, Northeast Frontier Railway Zone dismissed the episode. "The allegation that BSF was provided such kind of coach for travel is incorrect. Coaches are provided for travel only after necessary maintenance, repairs and cleaning. This video is of an unexamined coach which was being sent for repair and was not meant for travel of BSF forces," it posted.
About 1,200 BSF personnel, bound for Jammu Tawi, were scheduled to board the special train, starting from Udaipur in Tripura on June 6. The train had to make a few stops, with personnel also boarding from Tripura, Assam and West Bengal.

Rangarajan, Chennai Limited progress The progress being made as far as an India-U.S. trade deal is concerned (Page 1 'India, U.S. inch closer to limited trade agreement', June 12) is encouraging, especially amid global economic uncertainty. While an initial 'mini-deal' is welcome, India and the United States must resist piecemeal compromises. Instead, they must pursue a holistic, fair, and mutually beneficial pact. Tariff reductions and market access should be reciprocal, not one-sided. India must safeguard its domestic interests while opening its doors for innovation and investment. A deadline-driven approach, with transparency, will strengthen trust and global credibility. When we realise that not much has changed over three decades, it points to serious lapses in the planning, the development and the implementation of basic infrastructure, which is the lifeline of Mumbaikars. I have seen trains operating in Dubai and Japan, and I have travelled on the Dubai Metro for three years, from 2009. There are a few measures that the Railways and the Government can adopt to minimise such accidents. To flatten the peak in passenger volume, office hours can be staggered. The Railways can increase the frequency of local trains. Providing automatic sliding doors is also needed. More coaches and vestibules to connect them would be ideal. Jiji Panicker K. Authorities decide to commence land acquisition for Sabari rail
Bringing renewed hope to more than 2,000 families across central Travancore whose properties have been marked for the long-pending Sabari rail project, the Revenue department has decided to resume land acquisition for the project. Official sources said an online high-level meeting convened by the State government on Wednesday has directed the District Collectors of Ernakulam, Idukki and Kottayam to proceed with acquiring the required land. As part of this renewed effort, the previously functional land acquisition offices at Perumbavoor and Pala will be reopened, while new offices are slated to be established in Muvattupuzha and Kanjirappally. 'Work on the project is expected to formally begin with the visit of a high-level team from the Indian Railways early next month,' sources said. The meeting also decided to retain the existing alignment of the rail line. The project is being planned in such a way that land acquisition and construction can proceed simultaneously. 24.4 hectares acquired So far, 24.4 hectares of land have been acquired for the project in the Angamaly–Kalady stretch. However, more than 200 hectares still need to be acquired across the three districts. In the first phase, land will be acquired from Kalady to Ramapuram. The second phase, covering the stretch from Ramapuram to Erumely, will follow completion of alignment surveys and a Social Impact Assessment (SIA). 'A special revenue team will be deployed for this purpose,' the sources added. As the initial notification for acquiring land for the project was issued prior to the introduction of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act in 2013, the government will have to restart the entire process in accordance with the new legislation. According to officials, a new government order (GO) for the land acquisition will be issued shortly to commence the proceedings. CM's meet The approval for the construction of the rail line connecting Angamaly and Erumely, the gateway to Sabarimala was announced after a meeting held between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi recently. The 111.48-km line was proposed in the 1997-98 Budget.
