Malaysia Aviation Group receives ISO certification for anti-bribery system

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has become the first Malaysian airline group to achieve the ISO 37001:2016 Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS) certification.
According to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the certification is an internationally recognised standard for the implementation of anti-bribery management systems within an organisation.
MAG said in a statement the certification currently applies to group-level functions involving governance, risk, compliance, sustainability, and leadership, with controls in place to manage bribery risks across high-impact areas such as procurement, vendor engagement, and third-party interactions.
"An effective anti-bribery system must be driven from the top. This certification is not just a formality—it is a firm declaration of our zero-tolerance stance against bribery, fraud, and corruption.
"ISO 37001 reinforces the controls we have built into every part of our operations, from procurement and policymaking to how we engage with partners be it in Malaysia or our international offices," said MAG group managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail.
MAG's certification process was strongly supported by its board of directors and group executive committee, and included a detailed corruption risk assessment, the formation of a dedicated Working group committee, and the development of the ABMS framework.
This was complemented by 16 training sessions, workshops, and awareness campaigns rolled out across key business functions to embed the principles of integrity throughout the organisation.
MAG also operates a publicly accessible whistleblowing platform, providing a safe and confidential channel for reporting suspected misconduct.
Within the organisation, the Group Business Integrity unit currently has two Certified Integrity Officers (CeIOs), with plans to certify more personnel across departments to ensure the ABMS is sustained and embedded throughout the Group.
The group now aims to progressively expand the certification scope to include other business pillars
and entities, with the goal of fostering a business ecosystem grounded in integrity and ethical conduct across all touchpoints.

LONDON: Malaysia is looking to strengthen its bilateral cooperation with the United Kingdom in several strategic sectors, following a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and United Kingdom Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed. In discussing closer bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and the UK, Ahmad Zahid said he expressed the Malaysia's commitment to becoming the Asean Hub for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Certification and Excellence. "The focus will be on high-value industries such as semiconductors, electric vehicles (EV), aerospace, and green energy. "I also conveyed Malaysia's intention to expand collaboration with UK academic institutions and industries to enhance TVET training, certification, and the employability of Malaysian graduates," he told reporters during his working visit to Britain on Monday (June 2). On rural development, Ahmad Zahid said the country is keen to learn from the UK's approach in transforming rural areas into sustainable economic growth zones. "We also discussed matters related to disaster management, access to clean water, and the use of new technologies to strengthen resilience against global climate change," he said. Several issues concerning the environment were also discussed especially on ways to overcome the problem of polluted rivers. "Malaysia needs to learn how the UK dealt with rehabilitating polluted rivers. "We need to take heed of how polluted rivers have become a thing of the past in the UK as we are still facing the same problem. "The first step to learning from them is to raise public awareness of the problem with polluted rivers," he said. The meeting also touched on renewable energy cooperation, including the proposal to reactivate the Asean Power Grid and explore investment opportunities in solar and green energy, he said. "The UK's establishment of GB Energy, a national clean energy company, was noted as a positive signal of its strong commitment to the green agenda. "I expressed Malaysia's readiness to be a strategic partner in this development," he said In addition, Ahmad Zahid said he also highlighted the potential of Islamic financial instruments such as sukuk to support climate finance and sustainable development cooperation. "This includes bolstering the global halal industry through the establishment of a World Halal Council and a unified halal logo, which aims to reinforce international consumer confidence in Malaysia's standards," he added. Ahmad Zahid said both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade ties, including through frameworks such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and increasing business-to-business (B2B) engagement between the private sectors of both nations. "I believe this meeting has opened new avenues to elevate Malaysia–UK cooperation to a more strategic level, especially in building a more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient future," he said. Ahmad Zahid also hosted a special gathering on Monday night with approximately 101 Malaysians, including 60 Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) sponsored students based in the UK, reinforcing the government's engagement with the diaspora community. He reminded the students to never forget to give back to the country once they have finished their studies. "While the salaries here (UK) might be substantially higher, returning and helping to develop the country further is priceless and much more meaningful. "We must instil in the Mara students the spirit of togetherness," he said.

Millions of M'sian homes uninsured and vulnerable
PETALING JAYA: Day in, day out, stories appear about fires, flash floods or other catastrophes caused by extreme weather. Yet, few Malaysian homeowners seemed inclined to protect their homes against such calamities. 'More than 50% of Malaysian households remain uninsured against structural damage caused by fire, floods or severe weather conditions,' said the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM). According to its data, the take-up rate for fire and home insurance policies has remained at around 43% for the past two years. In 2023, only 3.89 million homes were insured out of the 8.88 million households. Last year, of the 9.1 million households, only 3.87 million had a fire and home insurance policy. As climate events grow more unpredictable and property values rise, PIAM said homeowners should reassess their protection strategies for their property and contents. Citing a 2024 climate resilience survey by Zurich Malaysia, PIAM said 54% of Malaysians feel unprepared for potential climate risks, with 38% citing financial constraints as a barrier to being adequately protected. 'Floods (75%), heatwaves (74%) and landslides (70%) are the top worries, while urban infrastructure risks, for example fallen trees and sinkholes, are becoming an emerging concern (67%), following recent incidents in Kuala Lumpur,' it said. PIAM, on its part, is raising awareness of the flood coverage options available for homeowners, citing policies that could be just RM14 a month (or 0.086%) of the sum insured for a RM200,000 property. 'The key advice is to contact your insurance provider or agent to learn more about fire and home insurance policies and how to best protect your home and belongings against potential risks,' it said. However, the association acknowledged that there had been a gradual increase in demand among Malaysians for more comprehensive home insurance plans, particularly those covering flood and climate-related risks. 'In the first half of 2023, the take-up rate for fire insurance policies with flood coverage increased to 33%, up from 31% in 2022,' it added. Some of the preferred coverages include the basic fire coverage, which covers damages from direct burning, heat, smoke, and extinguishing water, which can affect nearby properties. Financial institutions often mandate this for homes with mortgages. Aside from that, householder and house owner policies cover damages that are not only confined to the structure but also to contents and personal liability. 'These policies offer broader protection, particularly valuable given Malaysia's vulnerability to floods and fire,' it said.
