Search operation resumes at Gujarat bridge tragedy site, two still missing
Several vehicles plunged into the river after a segment of the four-decade-old bridge, connecting Anand and Vadodara districts, collapsed near Gambhira village close to Padra town on Wednesday morning.
The operation resumed on the third day of the Gambhira bridge tragedy, with 18 bodies recovered by Thursday night. Efforts are still underway to trace two more persons, who are missing, Vadodara Collector Anil Dhameliya said.
The primary objective of our operation today is to recover a body trapped under a slab in the river, and the missing driver of a truck stuck in the water, he told mediapersons.
A list of eight missing persons was compiled on Thursday, and the bodies of six of them were recovered, he said.
The operation is being carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies, with locals joining the efforts.
Dhameliya said that the rescue teams continue to work amid challenges, including muddy terrain, release of soda ash in water and a tanker filled with a highly corrosive substance.
A tanker that fell into the river was carrying sulphuric acid, and care is being made to ensure that it does not leak, he said.
There is a presence of soda ash in the water, which is causing irritation and itching for the rescuers. Attempts are being made to neutralise it, the official said.
Dhameliya said the mud in the river and on its banks has also complicated the rescue operation.
Since some vehicles, including a loaded truck, are still stuck in the muddy waters of the river, the district administration had used a high-performance truck' of the Indian Army to pull them out, a government release said earlier.
To overcome the problem of mud, a temporary platform has been prepared on the riverbank for the rescue teams by spreading three truckloads of concrete mix, said the release.
On Thursday, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel suspended four engineers of the state's roads and buildings department in connection with the bridge collapse.
At least six major incidents of bridge collapse have taken place in Gujarat since 2021.
In December 2021, a slab collapsed during the construction of the Mumatpura flyover on the outskirts of Ahmedabad city. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident.
In October 2022, as many as 135 persons were killed when a British-era suspension bridge over the Machchhu river in Morbi town collapsed, when over 200 tourists were on it.
In June 2023, a newly built bridge on the Mindhola river in the Tapi district collapsed. No one was hurt in the accident.
In September 2023, four persons were injured after a portion of an old bridge on the Bhogavo river in Surendranagar district collapsed when a 40-ton dumper was navigating it near Wadhwan city.
In October 2023, two persons sitting in an autorickshaw died after six concrete girders or slabs, which were installed on the pillars of an under-construction bridge near the RTO Circle in Palanpur town of Banaskantha, collapsed.
In August 2024, a small bridge on the Bhogavo river connecting Habiyasar village with Chotila town in Surendranagar district collapsed after a sudden rise in water following discharge from an overflowing dam. No casualties were reported in the incident.

Delhi: Divers, drones searching for body of missing DU student in Yamuna
The body of a 19-year-old Delhi University student was recovered from the Yamuna near the Geeta Colony flyover in east Delhi. The woman was reported missing on July 7. Police had initially believed that the woman had been kidnapped, until her family found a note in her bedroom suggesting that she intended to take her own life by jumping off Signature Bridge, officers said. Boats, divers, and drones were deployed to search the river from Nigam Bodh Ghat to downstream areas near Noida. The woman is believed to have died by suicide. (Representational image) The family, originally from Tripura, lives in an apartment complex in south Delhi. The woman is a second year undergraduate student at a college in south Delhi. 'The woman's sister approached police on July 7 and said she had been missing since 5pm. The woman had left her house saying she was going to Sarai Rohilla Railway Station to drop a friend. Her mother took note of the phone number of the cab driver who came home to take her to the station,' said deputy commissioner of police (south) Ankit Chauhan. 'Around 8.45pm, when the woman didn't return home and her phone became switched off, her family called the friend who she had said she was going to drop at the railway station. But the friend said the woman didn't meet her. We questioned the cab driver, who told us that he had dropped the woman at Signature Bridge,' he added. 'Technical surveillance corroborated the cab driver's testimony, placing the woman's mobile phone location at Signature Bridge shortly after she left home,' said a senior police officer. Police registered a case on charges of kidnapping and began a probe. However, later that day, her family a note in her bedroom suggesting that she intended to take her own life by jumping off Signature Bridge, police said. Eyewitnesses at Signature Bridge reported seeing a young woman standing on the edge of the bridge. Moments later, she was no longer in sight. The Delhi Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams quickly began searching the Yamuna, using drones to scan inaccessible patches of the river. Investigators reached out to the woman's friends who said that she had been under emotional distress for the past few months. On the morning of July 7, she had sent messages via email and WhatsApp that hinted at her mental state, police said. These are now being examined as part of the investigation, police said. On Saturday, Tripura chief minister Manik Saha had asked the police to take steps to rescue the woman. 'The report of the woman, a resident of Sabroom who has reportedly gone missing in New Delhi, has come to the notice of the chief minister's office. Necessary instructions have been promptly issued to the police to take immediate and appropriate action,' the CMO said on X. A Tripura police official, requesting anonymity, said they are in touch with the Delhi Police. With inputs from Priyanka Deb Barman

'Want To Blame Pilots....We Don't Accept It': Kin Of Air India Crash Victims On Probe Report
Last Updated: The relative of a victim said that he has dismissed the compensation amount offered by the airline, adding that he would take them to court for 'killing our family members'. Relatives of those killed in the Air India plane crash in Gujarat on 12 June have criticised the preliminary probe report, with some also calling it a 'cover-up". 'This report is wrong. We don't accept it," said Ameen Siddiqui, the brother-in-law of British national and Gloucestershire resident Akeel Nanabawa — who died along with his wife, Hannaa Vorajee and their daughter Sara in the crash. Siddiqui told the UK's The Telegraph that 'they want to blame dead pilots who can't defend themselves". He also mentioned that he has dismissed the compensation amount offered by the airline, adding that he would take them to court for 'killing our family members". A relative of another victim, Vallabh Nagji Agheda, called the probe a 'cover-up" for Air India and Boeing. Vallabh Nagji was travelling with his wife, Vinaben Vallabh Agheda, when the tragedy unfolded. 'We were pre-empting that they would start blaming the pilots. Why are they not looking for a mechanical fault? How qualified are the people in the Indian Air Accident Investigation Bureau? The FAA (US aviation regulator) gave an advisory in 2018 to check the potential disengagement of the fuel control switch locking feature. Shouldn't they have made this a mandatory requirement rather than an advisory?" Joge asked. Speaking to TOI, the youngest son of the Agheda couple said, 'It does not look like it's the pilot's fault. It could be Boeing's design fault with the switches, or it could be Air India's maintenance issues. Most of the families believe it's a problem with the aircraft. Air India is helping us with compensation but we are more concerned about getting the right report. We want the truth to make sure another disaster doesn't happen." The Indian Commercial Pilots' Association (ICPA) on Sunday raised concerns over the probe report into the Air India crash, saying they are 'deeply disturbed". 'In the aftermath of this incident, we are deeply disturbed by speculative narratives emerging in sections of the media and public discourse — particularly the reckless and unfounded insinuation of pilot suicide," said the ICPA. In an official statement, the ICPA called the accusations against the AI171 pilots and flight crew a 'gross violation" and a 'disservice to the profession". Air India Crash Probe Report The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), in its preliminary report on the crash that killed 260 people on 12 June, said the fuel switches to the engines were cut off within a gap of 1 second immediately after take-off, causing confusion in the cockpit of Air India flight AI171. A five-member team appointed by the AAIB is probing the crash, which is also the first case where a Boeing 787 Dreamliner accident resulted in hull loss. view comments First Published: July 14, 2025, 09:26 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘This is nuisance': Police see surge in hoax calls to Pune airport
Pune: From January to June-end this year, within a six-month period, Pune airport and airlines operating flights out of the city received as many as 16 hoax bomb threats, 16 times more than what they received in 2021, police data accessed by TOI has shown. All the 16 messages were confirmed as hoaxes, officials said, after security did a full sweep of the airport premises and planes. Each sweep takes nearly five hours, but that also depends on the number of planes parked at the airport during that time, the officials added. Since 2021, the data showed only two people have been arrested for making hoax calls or sending emails, claiming "bombs" had been placed at locations. The majority of hoaxers are yet to be traced, police officials said. "This has become a nuisance in the city," said joint police commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma. "The number of calls or emails has increased this year, and we have registered cases against the callers and email senders. In a couple of cases, we even took action against the email senders," he added. "We will take stern action against those involved in creating this disturbance," Kumar said, adding that authorities rely on standard protocols whenever there's a threat perception. "We make sure our teams immediately reach the spot along with dog squads and the bomb disposal equipment. If something amiss is spotted, we respond appropriately," he said. Officials said the hoax messages have also put pressure on the bomb disposal unit, which responds to a range of calls from across the city, to safely dispose of everything from gelatin sticks found at construction sites, crude bombs used to kill pigs to even British-era grenades and shells that have turned up in some parts of Pune.
