Ludhiana: 1.7L voters to lock nominees' fate today
As many as 1.74 lakh voters in Ludhiana West will exercise their right to franchise on Thursday in the by-election which has 14 candidates in fray. The bypoll comes after 20 days of campaigning and will be followed by the counting of votes on June 23.
The election is expected to witness a tight four-cornered contest among the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). AAP has nominated Sanjeev Arora, a sitting Rajya Sabha MP and prominent industrialist, whose declared assets, including those of his spouse, amount to ₹301 crore. This makes him the richest candidate in the recent Punjab elections. Arora's candidature has triggered criticism from Opposition leaders who allege that he was made to contest merely to secure a Rajya Sabha seat for Arvind Kejriwal.
The Congress has placed its hopes on Bharat Bhushan Ashu, a seasoned politician, former cabinet minister and two-time MLA. The BJP has fielded Jiwan Gupta, a local leader and the party's general secretary, who is contesting his first election. Similarly, the SAD has nominated advocate Parupkar Singh Ghumman, who is known for offering free legal aid to the poor. Both Gupta and Ghumman are debutants in the electoral arena.
The by-election was necessitated due to the unfortunate death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Gogi in an accidental firing incident in January. Since the formation of the Ludhiana West seat in 1977, the constituency has witnessed 10 elections. The Congress has won six of these, SAD two, while AAP and the former Janata Party have secured victory once each. In 2022, AAP's Gogi defeated Congress' Ashu, marking AAP's first win from this constituency.
The district administration has made extensive preparations to ensure a smooth polling process. District electoral officer and deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain has confirmed that all 194 polling stations will be equipped with masks, sanitizers, tents, fans, drinking water, wheelchairs and ramps to facilitate voters. Strict Covid-19 safety measures will be in place and polling will be closely monitored through webcasting to maintain transparency.
In an innovative move, the Election Commission of India has introduced a mobile phone deposit facility at every polling booth this time. Special arrangements have also been made to encourage inclusive voting. A women-staffed polling station has been set up at Lodhi Club in Rajguru Nagar. Persons with disabilities (PwDs) will manage a polling station at BVM School in Kitchlu Nagar, while a green polling station has been established inside the PAU campus at the Government Senior Secondary School. Ten model polling booths have also been created to showcase ideal voting conditions.
Additionally, the 'Vote from Home' initiative has been launched for senior citizens and voters with disabilities. On the eve of the election, 194 polling teams departed from Khalsa College for Women in GPS-enabled vehicles to reach their designated locations.
Security arrangements have also been tightened in the constituency. Additional deputy commissioner of police (operations) Ramandeep Singh Bhullar stated that 60 checkpoints have been established and 19 patrol teams are actively monitoring the area. There are also 21 flying squads and nine strategic surveillance teams in place. More than 1,000 police personnel will be deployed on election day to ensure law and order.
Historically, Ludhiana West has recorded strong voter turnouts. Since 1977, voter participation has consistently stayed above 55%. In 2012, 2017 and 2022, the voter turnout crossed the 60% mark, reaching close to 70% in 2012 and 2017.
The political stakes are high, particularly for AAP, which is looking to recover from its recent defeat in the Delhi assembly elections, where even party leader Arvind Kejriwal lost his seat. Arora, contesting his first assembly election after being nominated to the Rajya Sabha, is seen as a key figure in AAP's plan to regain ground.
Congress' Bharat Bhushan Ashu is aiming for a comeback after losing in 2022 and spending over a year in jail following a corruption case. Though the high court quashed the charges against him, internal rifts within the party may affect his prospects.
The SAD, once a dominant player in Punjab politics, is attempting to rebuild its influence after two successive electoral defeats in 2017 and 2022. The party is banking on Ghumman's clean image and social work to strike a chord with voters, but it faces an uphill battle to regain relevance.
Meanwhile, the BJP is trying to gain foothold in Punjab. The party performed strongly in Ludhiana West during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where it secured the highest number of votes in the segment, pushing AAP to a distant third. Its candidate Jiwan Gupta, a local resident, hopes to ride on this momentum to achieve victory in his maiden electoral contest.

Eligible families in KCR's adopted village get Indiramma Houses
Hyderabad: Minister for Revenue Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy on Wednesday announced that the Congress government has sanctioned Indiramma houses to all eligible families in Vasalamarri village of Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, the village once adopted by former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. The Minister, who is set to personally distribute sanction letters to 205 beneficiaries on Thursday, said the Congress government under CM Revanth Reddy is standing by those who were 'betrayed' in the name of development during the previous BRS regime. 'On November 1, 2020, then CM KCR adopted Vasalamarri village. Later, on June 22, 2021, he held a Gram Sabha and shared a community meal with the villagers, promising to develop it into a 'Golden Vasalamarri' and build double-bedroom houses for every family. However, KCR failed to keep his word, as not a single house was built during his tenure. Worse, several homes were demolished on either side of the road for the expansion of the route to KCR's farmhouse, leaving many families homeless. Those affected have been living in makeshift huts and tents ever since. They lost what little they had, and the promise of a model village remained just that, a promise,' Ponguleti recalled. Criticising former Chief Minister KCR, Minister Ponguleti said, 'Vasalamarri clearly shows how people's hopes were used for political gain. KCR said he would set an example for the whole country, but he couldn't even fulfil promises in the village he adopted.' The Minister said that under CM Revanth Reddy's directive, a fresh survey was conducted in the village, and 205 eligible families were identified for Indiramma housing. 'These houses have now been sanctioned. I will personally hand over the approval letters to the beneficiaries,' he said. The Minister reiterated the Congress government's commitment to welfare and inclusive development, stating that the Indiramma housing initiative is being revived to ensure that no deserving family is left without a home.

Row over Hindi: Marathi literary body opposes three-language formula
The Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Mahamandal, an apex Marathi literary body, has opposed the Maharashtra government's decision to adopt a three-language formula for classes 1 to 5, claiming the New Education Policy does not recommend it. The Mahamandal's statement came on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) amid opposition from the Congress and Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena to an amended government order issued on Tuesday which said Hindi would "generally" be a third language for these classes. "It is clearly mentioned [in NEP] that a third language should be introduced from Class 6," a release from the Mahamandal said. It also questioned the need to teach a third language when many schools do not have enough teachers, and students of higher classes struggle to read Marathi books of Class 2 level. "Instead of improving the quality of education, attempts are being made to make a third language compulsory," it claimed. Though the state government has provided that students can opt for any other Indian language instead of Hindi, it would be practically impossible as teachers of these languages will have to be brought from a respective state which is very difficult, it said. The Mahamandal claimed its opposition to Hindi was for cultural reasons as Hindi's "invasion" of Marathi was increasing. It also asked why the Maharashtra government has adopted such a policy when Hindi is not compulsory from Class 1 in any other State. A government resolution (GR) issued on Tuesday said Hindi will "generally" be a third language, instead of being mandatory, but gave an option to opt out if 20 students per grade in a school express the desire to study any other Indian language. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said, "We had earlier made Hindi compulsory, but in the GR issued yesterday, that compulsion has been removed... students can now opt for any Indian language as a third language."

Ludhiana: Ashu alleges bid to detain Cong man, confronts cops
A high drama unfolded in Jawahar Nagar on Wednesday afternoon when Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu confronted police officials over their 'bid to detain' a party supporter, Lakhan. The incident, on the election eve, added to the political heat in the city. According to the police, Lakhan was accused of threatening and slapping a local resident while accusing him of taking home ration provided by a rival political party. The police stated they were acting on a complaint filed by the alleged victim. However, Congress leaders strongly contested this version. Ashu, who arrived at the scene during the incident, accused the police of acting on behalf of the ruling party and intimidating Congress workers. 'Lakhan was live on Facebook when the police arrived, broke open the glass door of his premises and dragged him out,' said Ashu. 'The video clearly shows a man calmly parking his scooter and seeking not to be filmed, saying meri video te na bana. He then walked away without any confrontation. There was no threat, no slap.' In a video, also shared by Ashu on social media, he was seen confronting cops and even pushing one of them while they were in Jawahar Nagar for Lakhan. Congress supporters claimed that Lakhan had initially called the police himself to report the alleged distribution of ration by the opposition. However, they said the police did not respond at that time. Hours later, a team led by inspector Bikramjit Singh Ghuman, station house officer (SHO) of the division number 5 police station, and Dharampal Chaudhary, in-charge of Kochar market police post, arrived at the location and allegedly tried to forcibly detain Lakhan. Ashu claimed that when Lakhan asked to see the complaint against him, police officers forcibly entered his premises and attempted to arrest him without showing any formal document. 'While I protested, cops were seen writing a complaint on the spot to justify their actions. This clearly shows they were trying to cover up a wrongful act. It's shameful how the police are being used as a tool by the ruling party to harass our workers,' he said. When asked about the incident, a senior police official confirmed that a complaint had been received from a scooter-borne individual who claimed that Lakhan had stopped and slapped him while accusing him of accepting political ration. The officer further said, 'A police team went there only to question Lakhan who has a criminal history with four FIRs registered against him between 2017 and 2019, including two cases of scuffles, one involving snatching and one of theft.' Commissioner of police Swapan Sharma said, 'The police are verifying all aspects of the incident and will take appropriate action as per the law.' The incident has sparked a new wave of political controversy with the Congress accusing the administration of suppressing its workers ahead of the crucial Ludhiana West bypoll. Later Bharat Bhushan Ashu filed a complaint against the Ludhiana police and AAP workers for distribution of cash, liquor and ration and harassment of party workers. Ashu also demanded for immediate transfer of officers and FIR against AAP candidate and associates.
