Patna: With
women empowerment
being a big theme in today's social and political discourse, there is an indigenous community in Bihar where women have long been enjoying an empowered lifestyle. The women, inhabiting 'Tharuhat' in the 'terai' region along Bihar-Nepal border (mostly in West Champaran district), are not only economically self-dependent but also manage their families well.
As the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is commemorated on Aug 9, a lesson or two can be learned from the lifestyle of not just these women but the entire Tharu community, which resides in six 'tapa' (zones) in West Champran.
The Tharu people are an ethnic group indigenous to the 'terai' region in Bihar and are recognised as a scheduled tribe by the Govt of India. They say they are about 2.5 lakh in number, but the govt figure is slightly less.
Secretary of Tharu Kalyan Mahasangh, Deep Narayan Prasad, said that women have a high reputation in their society, and enjoy more social and economic rights in their family system, compared to others. Like, the 'Tharuhat' women play an active role in fishing, chasing animals away, business and above all choosing their life partners.
The women of the Tharu community have also formed self-help groups pursuing different businesses.

A sizeable number of these women are engaged in the production of bathing soaps from the milk of goats reared by them. These special soaps are in high demand among the health-conscious people living in metropolitan cities, said Suman Devi, the leader of a self-help group at Kadmahiya village in Bagaha-II block. Soap manufacturing has, of late, emerged as a popular cottage industry in this area, she added.
In recent times, education has played an important role in their socio-economic development.
Secretary of Bhartiya Tharu Kalyan Mahasangh, Rabindra Prasad, however, regretted that the women of this region are facing great difficulties in pursuing their higher education as there is not a single college in the entire Tharuhat. While some guardians afford to send their wards to distant places for higher education, a vast majority are compelled to discontinue their education after Class XII, he said.
Deep Narayan said that the Tharu culture is very eco-friendly, and all their practices and religious activities are deeply related to nature.
Their residence, food, clothes, art, religion, economy and many other parts of life are nature-based, and they try their best to maintain the ecological balance. Tharu people worship mainly their tribal Goddess 'Bhumsen' (Mother Earth).
Marriages in Tharu community are considered an act of god, and hence both bride and groom are worshipped at the time of marriage. No dowry is demanded. When the marriage is fixed, a token amount of Rs 5 or 11 is offered for the marriage, said Deep Narayan.
Rabindra said that about 500 marriages are solemnised every year in the community.

SECR honours legacy of two leprosy warriors, installs plaque at Champa station

Raipur: The South East Central Railway (SECR), Bilaspur division, installed a commemorative plaque at the Champa railway station in Janjgir-Champa district to honour the contributions of two social workers, the late Sadashiv Govind Katre and the late Damodar Ganesh Bapat. The plaque, placed near the main station manager's office, is dedicated to the social service journey of the two men. Katre, who was a railway employee and a leprosy patient, founded the Bharatiya Kushtha Nivarak Sangh (BKNS) in Champa district of Chhattisgarh in 1962. He dedicated his life to the rehabilitation and empowerment of leprosy patients, working against societal neglect and personal challenges. While working as a railway employee, he elevated the concept of social service. In honour of his contributions, the govt of India established the Katrenagar post office and released a special postal cover and cancellation stamp on Nov 12, 2024, according to SECR officials. Inspired by Katre, his colleague Bapat furthered the mission and gave the association a national identity. Bapat was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2018. The plaque is a tribute to the two social workers and is meant to inspire current and future generations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Costco Shoppers Say This Fat-Burning Patch Triggers Weight Loss "Unlike Any Other" Health Advice Today Undo The Indian Leprosy Eradication Association continues its work from its headquarters located about 7 km from the Champa railway station. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Anurag Kumar Singh said the SECR is committed to preserving such inspiring works and memories that connect society. "We hope the plaque will send a message to passengers and every section of society that service, sensitivity, and dedication are true human values. The railway administration will always respectfully remember such distinguished personalities of society," he said. Katre, affectionately known as 'Katre Guruji' by his associates, founded one of the largest leprosy centres in the country in Champa. A leprosy patient himself, he started his mission by cycling for hours with his deformed hands and feet to collect grains from village to village. The inspiration for this service came from Guru Golwalkar, who motivated Katre to dedicate his life to social service. Today, the Indian Leprosy Eradication Association in Champa is regarded as a sanctuary for leprosy patients, offering not only medical treatment but also a nurturing and dignified environment. Here, over 300 patients are trained in skills like making candles, weaving ropes, and making chalk, enabling them to live with self-respect. The centre also has a school and a hostel, the Sushil Vidyalaya, to educate the children of these patients. Born to Govind Katre and Radha Bhai in the Aron area of Guna district, Madhya Pradesh, Katre was the only son among three sisters. After losing his father at the age of eight, his life was marked by hardship. He joined the railways after his secondary education and became involved with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He was jailed for six months during the ban on the organisation in 1948. Noted social worker and Padma Shri awardee Damodar Ganesh Bapat passed away in 2019. He was 84. He dedicated his life to treating and serving leprosy patients at the BKNS in the Janjgir-Champa district. For his services to society, he was honoured with the fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 2018. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Govt arms people with meds to make state filariasis free by 27

1 2 Ranchi: State health, food supplies, and disaster management minister Irfan Ansari launched the mass drug administration (MDA) campaign against filariasis from Jamtara on Sunday. The drive aims to administer DEC, albendazole, and ivermectin to 1.27 crore people out of an identified 1.42 crore population in 80 targeted blocks across nine districts — Chatra, Godda, West Singhbhum, Seraikela, Hazaribag, Jamtara, Palamu, Latehar, and Dumka. Consuming the filariasis-preventive medicine on stage, Ansari said, "I have taken the medicine, you should too. We must make Jharkhand filariasis-free by 2027." The campaign aims to ensure that no eligible individual misses the dose, and fulfil the vision of a healthy and capable state. Exemptions apply for children under two years of age, pregnant women, and those with severe illnesses. Trained health workers would administer age-appropriate doses either at booths or through door-to-door visits, he added. Additional director and state programme officer for vector-borne diseases, Dr Birendra Kumar Singh, said, "The success of the MDA drive depends on coordinated efforts with departments including education, ICDS, Panchayati Raj, urban development, drinking water and sanitation, livelihood, and PHED." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Japanese AI invention allows you to speak 68 languages instantly.
