‘We cannot allow bus services to be driven off our streets by fear', says Dublin TD
The driver was waiting to start driving a number 13 bus at Mountjoy Square on Friday night, when a man got on board and pointed a gun at him.
The 7, 7a and 13 bus routes are not serving Mountjoy Square after 7pm as a result.
For Routes 7 and 7a, customers can go to stop 4725 O'Connell Street Upper, while for Route 13, they can go to stop 261 Parnell Square East instead.
Grace Boland, Fine Gael TD for Fingal West, said greater security on public transport is required.
'Central Dublin bus services were disrupted this weekend following violent threats against drivers – most recently, a terrifying incident where a driver was threatened with a suspected firearm in Mountjoy Square,' she said.
'Recent violent attacks on bus drivers in Dublin have highlighted the dangerous conditions facing our public transport workers.
'These incidents are not isolated. SIPTU has been raising the alarm for months about escalating violence and anti-social behaviour on our buses.
'Our drivers are on the frontlines, serving the public every day, and they deserve to feel safe in their workplaces.
'Drivers are being left to manage rising passenger numbers in an increasingly volatile environment, with little or no added support.
'The Programme for Government made a clear commitment to establish a dedicated Transport Security Force under the National Transport Authority.

'That commitment must be honoured. Delays are putting lives at risk. We cannot allow bus services to be driven off our streets by fear.
'It's not enough to condemn these attacks after they happen – we need a proactive, coordinated response. That means visible enforcement, a dedicated security presence on our public transport.'
Dublin Bus confirmed the incident involving one of their vehicles in the vicinity of Mountjoy Square late on Friday night.
'No customers were on board at the time. We are providing full support to the driver involved and we are liaising with An Garda Siochana,' a spokesperson from Dublin Bus said.
'We will continue to assist them in any way possible. As the investigation is ongoing, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.
'Dublin Bus has been actively working to address the issue of anti-social behaviour, through increased co-operation with An Garda Síochána and strong community work across the city and county.
'In October 2024, Dublin Bus launched its new Safer Journeys Team, aimed at enhancing safety and security across its network.
'This landmark pilot, the first in the company's history, arose from key recommendations put forward by independent security experts, and forms part of the company's ongoing commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for customers and employees.
'The safety and security of our customers and employees has always been, and remains, our top priority.
'We have consistently lobbied for the establishment of a transport police since 2022. While the commitment in the Programme for Government is a significant and positive step, the key now is timely and effective implementation.'

‘Social media firms should face Oireachtas over spread of lies and fear' says TD
Social media companies should 'most definitely' be brought before the Oireachtas Media Committee to discuss how they deal with disinformation on foot of claims made online in the wake of the shooting in Carlow over the weekend, a TD has said. When the incident became public, some far-right actors pushed false information that the incident was carried out by a foreign national. Some social media users described the incident as a mass shooting with multiple victims wounded. However, the gardaí moved quickly to clarify that the shooter was Evan Fitzgerald, 22, of Portrushen, Kiltegan, Co. Wicklow, who was a white Irish male. The clarification of his ethnicity was made in a bid to stop disinformation from spreading about the identity of the shooter. Emergency services near the scene at Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow. Pic: Niall Carson/PA Wire Gardaí confirmed Fitzgerald was alone when he walked through the shopping centre and discharged the firearm into the air a number of times. Fitzgerald ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot. Some web users claimed Ireland may have a civil war 'very soon' on the foot of the incident, with others talking about a 'cover-up' of the incident. Other accounts suggested the shooter was 'not white' and 'probably' an illegal immigrant. None of these allegations was true. Micheál Carrigy, a Fine Gael TD who sits on the Oireachtas Media Committee, said: 'They [social media firms] should be quicker in taking down this information that's on the platforms. Other platforms are being used to spread disinformation and spread disquiet and untruths.' The deputy said this is 'something that can't be done through mainstream media because you have to publish what is correct', adding: 'Their platforms are being used to spread fear in communities and false information. Senator Micheál Carrigy. Pic: Gareth Chaney/Collins Photos 'So they need to be quicker in taking down what has been identified as incorrect information and spreading hatred within communities.' He said he would 'most definitely' like to see companies such as X, Meta and TikTok back in front of an Oireachtas committee soon to discuss the matter. Mr Carrigy added: 'There's people out there using those platforms to promote their racist views. 'As I said, spreading something that's factually incorrect, I think they need to have stronger measures or stronger controls on where people are found to be using platforms or accounts [improperly]. They should be banned, or their accounts should be shut down and closed down and banned. They have to have stricter and tighter controls with regard to the accounts that are being hosted on their platforms.' No one was injured by the shots discharged on Sunday. However, one young girl suffered a 'minor leg injury' when she fell while running from the scene.. In a transparency report issued last year, social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, stated that it had suspended over four million accounts for a variety of breaches of its service and had removed more than ten million posts. However, since Elon Musk took over the platform, it has become much more robust in defending free speech rather than moderating its content.

Former county councillor to be sentenced for assault and attack on van during family dispute
A FORMER DONEGAL County Councillor is to be sentenced after admitting assaulting a man and damaging his van. Gareth Reid appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court where he pleaded guilty to the charges which arose out of a family dispute over land. The former Fine Gael councillor admitted the charges which occurred following an incident at Knockfair, Stranorlar, in May 2021. The 42-year-old was charged with assaulting Paul McCool and causing him harm, the charge being contrary to section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997. Reid, of Lawnsdale, Stranorlar, was also charged with an act of criminal damage. Advertisement He was charged that he did, without lawful exact, damage property, namely the driver's side of a Peugeot Partner van belonging to Paul McCool, a charge contrary to section 2 (1) of the Criminal Damage Act, 1991. He spoke only to plead guilty to the charges when he appeared before Judge John Aylmer. His barrister, Mr Peter Nolan BL, told the court that Reid has previous convictions 'going back some time'. Mr Nolan said that there is a 'very involved family history in this matter'. He told Judge Aylmer that the matter is also before the High Court over 'lands, wills et cetera' and the court should be informed about these matters. Judge Aylmer requested a probation report and asked that it include an assessment on Reid's suitability for community service. In September 2008, Reid was co-opted onto Donegal County Council, taking the seat of his grandfather, JJ Reid, following his retirement from politics but failed to be re-elected to the Council the following year.
