Former county councillor to be sentenced for assault and attack on van during family dispute
Gareth Reid appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court where he pleaded guilty to the charges which arose out of a family dispute over land.
The former Fine Gael councillor admitted the charges which occurred following an incident at Knockfair, Stranorlar, in May 2021.
The 42-year-old was charged with assaulting Paul McCool and causing him harm, the charge being contrary to section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997.
Reid, of Lawnsdale, Stranorlar, was also charged with an act of criminal damage.

He was charged that he did, without lawful exact, damage property, namely the driver's side of a Peugeot Partner van belonging to Paul McCool, a charge contrary to section 2 (1) of the Criminal Damage Act, 1991.
He spoke only to plead guilty to the charges when he appeared before Judge John Aylmer.
His barrister, Mr Peter Nolan BL, told the court that Reid has previous convictions 'going back some time'.
Mr Nolan said that there is a 'very involved family history in this matter'.
He told Judge Aylmer that the matter is also before the High Court over 'lands, wills et cetera' and the court should be informed about these matters.
Judge Aylmer requested a probation report and asked that it include an assessment on Reid's suitability for community service.
In September 2008, Reid was co-opted onto Donegal County Council, taking the seat of his grandfather, JJ Reid, following his retirement from politics but failed to be re-elected to the Council the following year.

Time for Fine Gael Áras candidate contest 'tight'
A member of Fine Gael's National Executive has said that while she would like to see a contest for the party's presidential nomination if there was more than one candidate, the time to do so was now "tight". Speaking on RTÉ's This Week, Fine Gael MEP Regina Doherty said the original timeline was to officially launch their campaign at the beginning of the second week of September, which was drawing near. "Time is of the essence, lots of people are still on their holidays is what maybe makes it a little more will deal with whatever is put in front of us tomorrow evening we will open the contest we will see how many contenders there are and then decisions will be made based on timelines thereafter," she said. The party's national executive council is due to meet tomorrow evening to discuss next steps following the withdrawal of Mairead McGuinness earlier this week. "The purpose of the meeting now is to assess where we are as a political party and to make decisions for the days and the weeks ahead in relation to the presidential election," Ms Doherty said. She thanked Ms McGuinness for her service to the party as well as the country and wished her family well. She said that tomorrow night, the national executive will reaffirm the decision made last April to run a candidate. "And for us to set out the process by which that candidate can be nominated and voted upon by the electoral college." Ms Doherty said. She added that timelines will also be decided by the national executive as they are conscious that "the clock is ticking". "We've been planning for this election since April, I think we are one of the first political parties to start our process and obviously, what we thought was finish that process earlier on in the summer, but obviously we will make these decisions tomorrow night based on the current circumstances," she said. She said people were expressing their views but said there was no evidence that camps had begun to form. Ms Doherty stressed that most people were still in shock and had "huge respect and regard for Mairead and her family". "I think most people will be happy to wait for the national executive to meet tomorrow night to see what process is put out in place and then I think you will probably see naturally people will decide to declare who they are supporting or who they think might be a great candidate for us and express their views and opinions both privately and publicly," Ms Doherty said. Ms Doherty refused to speculate about who she wanted to support, adding she would rather attend the meeting tomorrow night and wait for the process to be set out. "We don't have anybody official as of yet," she said. She added that she did not have anyone specific in mind at the moment. Asked about growing support for Heather Humphreys, she said people hold the former Cavan-Monaghan TD in high regard, but added that people like MEP Seán Kelly had a team of supporters championing him at the moment. Ms Humphreys told the Sunday Independent that she is now giving it "very serious consideration". "We are very lucky in the position in Fine Gael that we have more than a number of people who are both affable, amiable, well qualified, you know, politically experienced, so we are in a very, very lucky position, I suppose and we will set that ball rolling again now tomorrow evening. "If there were more than one candidate, she said it was healthy for a party to have a contest and members to decide who they wanted to represent them as a political party. "I'm one of those pragmatic people that likes to see people allowing them to have their say and have their day to make their decisions as opposed to having things pre-orchestrated beforehand," Ms Doherty said. However, Ms Doherty appreciated that a contest could put them under time pressure. Heather Humphreys likely to be second confirmed candidate to enter Áras race
Heather Humphreys is likely to be the second confirmed candidate to enter the race for the Aras and yesterday she received the backing of a government minister. Independent TD Noel Grealish has said he believes the former social protection minister would make an excellent president if she were to put her name forward. The Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture said Ms Humphreys is vastly experienced and well regarded by TDs across parties. He said: "Heather was a vastly experienced Minister at cabinet, having served in a number of different portfolios and representing the interests of all Irish people. 'She was very well regarded by TDs across all political parties and she would appeal to a broad base of voters,' said Minister Grealish. 'Heather has an in-depth knowledge of the Constitution and the role of President and she would represent our country with distinction both at home and abroad if she were to be elected as President of Ireland.' So far independent TD Catherine Connolly is the only confirmed candidate after formally launching her bid to become Ireland's next president last month. During the week former justice minister Frances Fitzgerald ruled herself out of the presidential race shortly after Mairead McGuinness' departure from the election contest on health grounds. Senior Fine Gael party members will meet over the coming days to consider its next steps and it is likely Ms Humphreys will be urged to become a candidate. The former Cavan-Monaghan TD had been linked with a presidential bid before, and while she said she was flattered to be considered before withdrawing her name. Former GAA chief and MEP Seán Kelly is another possible Fine Gael candidate after saying he will "most likely reconsider" his possible candidacy in the presidential campaign in light of Mairead McGuinness' withdrawal. Meanwhile presidential hopeful Gareth Sheridan, who claims he has the backing of two local councils, has criticised what he claimed are Catherine Connolly's 'aggressive nationalism' and her attack on Ireland's allies. He said: Catherine Connolly is wrong to engage in a form of aggressive Nationalism and worse, attacking our long-established allies. 'I fear this is evidence of her Anti-EU politics. Ms Connolly is hoping to be our next President and her claim that Ireland can't trust the United States, the United Kingdom and France is an ill-judged over-step. 'We will have a new President in less than thirteen weeks and here is Deputy Connolly, a Party candidate endorsed by the Social Democrats and People Before Profit, on the weekend of a US – Russian Summit to achieve peace in Ukraine, expressing what could be interpreted as a pro-Putin stance. 'Ukraine President Zelensky is on record numerous times thanking the EU, USA and UK for their financial and military aid to defend his country against the Russian invasion. 'For myself, as a non-party, a-political candidate not beholden to any ideology, seeking a nomination under Article 12.2.2. of our Constitution, I am calling for an immediate end to invasions of Ukraine and Gaza. Presidential campaigning ramping up as potential candidates take stock after McGuinness withdrawal

Campaigning is picking up pace as potential candidates take stock of a changed election landscape after the unexpected withdrawal of Fine Gael nominee Mairéad McGuinness, who has taken herself out of the running due to health reasons after spending time recently in hospital. Fine Gael is now faced with deciding who will replace her to run against left-wing candidate Catherine Connolly and others who may secure a place on the ballot between now and the official start of the election period.
