BBC News6 days ago
A new Metro train has been hit with its first major act of vandalism.Operator Nexus said it was the first time one of its new Tyne and Wear Metro trains had had a window shattered.Northumbria Police said the train was targeted with a "missile-style" object at about 14:30 BST on Tuesday as it passed through the Tynemouth and Cullercoats area.Previously the Stadler-built fleet was daubed with graffiti on the journey to the North East.
Vandals also managed to deface one of the first of the trains to arrive in the country in 2023.Kevin Storey, operations director at Nexus, said all 44 of the CCTV cameras, including 28 on board the carriage and 16 exterior ones, would be checked to try and find the perpetrator. He said the damaged train was withdrawn and returned to the Gosforth depot for repairs, but was now back in service.
It is hoped the rollout of the new fleet of 46 trains will be completed by the end of next year, replacing the Metro's existing stock. There have been issues with the Stadler fleet in recent weeks, with their air con systems suffering leaks during hot weather and an incident in which a train's doors opened on the wrong side.

Erik Menendez hospitalised with 'serious' condition before hearing for release

Erik Menendez has reportedly been diagnosed with a 'serious' health condition and hospitalised just weeks before a parole hearing he and his brother have long awaited. The 54-year-old – who along with his brother Lyle, 57, has spent decades in prison for murdering their parents in 1989 – is so ill that his lawyer is urging California's governor to release him right away. 'It's a serious condition,' Mark Geragos told TMZ. 'I just think he should be parole furloughed, I think is the proper term, and he could be medically furloughed in advance of the hearing so that he can work with the parole attorney and get up to speed and be ready and do it and give it his best shot. In an update on Tuesday afternoon, TMZ reported that Erik is being treated for kidney stones. Geragos said his client's condition is so serious that Governor Gavin Newsom should release him before the parole hearing scheduled for August 21 and 22. Though Erik is receiving medical treatment in prison, he presumably would benefit from seeing a specialist outside the confines of the Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. The siblings were sentenced to life in prison without parole for shooting dead their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, inside their Beverly Hills home. Erik and Lyle, then 18 and 21 years old, claimed that their father, who was RCA Records' chief operating officer, sexually abused them and that their former pageant queen mum turned a blind eye to that. The brothers have argued that their dad threatened to kill them if they told anyone, and that they acted in self-defence. But prosecutors said the brothers murdered their parents out of greed and pointed to their lavish spending after the killings. On May 13, the brothers were resentenced to 50 years to life in prison, which made them eligible for parole. The final decision on if the Menendez brothers are suitable for parole lies with Newsom. On Sunday, the Democratic governor spoke about the case with Ryan Murphy, who created the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. More Trending The governor said he has not watched the Netflix show in order to avoid it influencing his decision on whether the brothers should be freed. 'I'm going to see if I made the right decision,' Newsom said with a laugh. 'Like, 'Jesus, I should've watched this before.'' Newsom could also seek to grant the brothers clemency, but has said he will hold off until their last parole board hearing to make that decision. AOC's office vandalized after recent House vote involving US aid to Israel

A Bronx office of the US House member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was vandalized early on Monday, according to New York City police, who say they are investigating. The vandalism occurred as the progressive Democratic congresswoman grapples with 'threats on [her] life', as her campaign manager put it, after a recent US House of Representatives vote involving American aid to Israel. Officers called out to Ocasio-Cortez's campaign office in Westchester Square at about 12.45am found its front covered in red paint, police said. Images circulating online and on local news media outlets showed someone had left a sign which alleged that Ocasio-Cortez 'funds genocide in Gaza', though she has repeatedly criticized the Israeli military's strikes there. The vandalism occurred after Ocasio-Cortez on Friday voted against a defense spending bill amendment authored by the Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia that would have eliminated funding for the system protecting Israel from missiles. Ocasio-Cortez voted 'no' on the defense spending bill itself, which passed the House and included more than $600m in aid for Israel, as she alluded to on an X post hours after the office's vandalism. Her vote on Greene's amendment prompted the Democratic Socialists of America to issue a statement accusing Ocasio-Cortez of backing Israel's 'eliminationist campaign against the Palestinian people'. Ocasio-Cortez, who has maintained that Israel's military actions in Gaza amount to a 'genocide' and often draws political criticism from US conservatives, wrote on Monday on X: 'Google is free. If you're saying I voted for military funding, you are lying.' A separate X post from Ocasio-Cortez's campaign manager, Oliver Hidalgo-Wohlleben, said Monday's office vandalism coincided with her staff having recently received 'multiple threats on the congresswoman's life'. 'We are treating this seriously with our security partners to make sure she, our staff, and volunteers are safe,' Hidalgo Wohlleben's post said. A post on Monday on the social media platform Bluesky from Ocasio-Cortez added: 'The threat environment this morning is scary. 'Drag me for the position if you disagree but don't lie. It's out of control. Saying I voted for this funding is false.' Hidalgo-Wohlleben's X post said that the Bronx congresswoman's staff was in the process of cleaning up the vandalized office. 'Our office is a hub in the community, and we want it to be a safe space for all our neighbors,' Hidalgo-Wohlleben also wrote. Ocasio-Cortez has represented New York's 14th congressional district since early 2019. Her endorsement of the democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani in New York City's mayoral race in June captured national headlines.

Dem-run city is now so rough locals have to drive around with broken car windows

Thieving vandals have turned Minnesota 's capital into a dystopian hellscape by indiscriminately smashing hundreds of car windows, leaving a trail of broken glass across the Democrat-run city. Residents in recent weeks have gone to their vehicles to find windows broken and in some cases personal items swiped. More than 70 vehicles were struck on Monday alone, the Minneapolis Police Department told the Daily Mail. A total of 90 vehicles were damaged over the weekend. More than 200 cars have been targeted overall, according to The Minnesota Star Tribune. 'It can't get any worse than this,' one observer said in a social media clip featuring rows of parked cars with their windows based in. Another resident took to Reddit to post a video of their street in the Uptown neighborhood showing dozens of cars that suffered the same fate. 'I woke up to find this on my street today,' the person wrote. 'This is very disappointing to see.' Despite the widespread destruction, no arrests have been made. 'Investigators are working diligently to collect information about the incidents and to locate and identify suspects,' the Minneapolis Police Department told the Daily Mail in a statement. Police are trying to determine if the break-ins this weekend were connected to ones from the previous weekend. Teacher Rachel Linnemann discovered her window was busted after her boyfriend told her around 6:15am on Monday, she told the Star Tribune. Her car was sitting outside her home on James Avenue home and camping equipment had been stolen. 'It looks like at least 15 cars,' she told the outlet, noting that cars on James and Lake streets and Lagoon Avenue were targeted. The attacks happened sometime between 10:30pm and 6:15am, as she had walked her dog the night before and saw that her vehicle was fine. Police also said around 25 cars were vandalized near Central Avenue the same night. Linnemann, who is on summer vacation from school, didn't have to commute to work that morning - but many in her neighborhood did. Residents were spotted sweeping up glass from the street and inside cars before leaving for work. Joel Van Horn just moved to the area west of the Uptown neighborhood a month ago and was looking forward to taking walks with his dog, he told KARE 11. 'I mean, I knew it was going to happen if I didn't get a parking garage. I didn't act fast enough, you know,' said Van Horn, who paid $350to replace a truck window. 'You just factor that into the cost of living, unfortunately.' Robin Slaman, who has been living on Lyndale Avenue for 20 years, said she has noticed an uptick in crime in the city. 'I'm not shocked, but I haven't quite seen that before,' she told KARE 11. 'Needles on everyone's property, they leave trash everywhere, and if you leave anything sitting out on your property, it will be gone like that.' She's now considering moving out of the neighborhood. 'I love my home, but how much longer do I want to live here, how much worse do I want to see it get?' she said. So far this year, nearly 4,000 vandalism crimes have taken place in the city of 425,000 residents, according to police statistics. There's also been nearly 1,200 burglaries.
