
What if your earbuds could read your mind?

For the past few months, when I really needed to get something done, I put on a special pair of headphones that could read my mind. Well, kind of. The headphones are equipped with a brain-computer interface that picks up electrical signals from my brain and uses algorithms to interpret that data. When my focus starts to slip, the headphones know it, and an app tells me to take a break.
It sounds like something out of science fiction, but a decade-old startup called Neurable is pioneering the technology, and it's preparing to put the brain-tracking tricks into more gadgets. Earbuds, glasses, helmets — anything that can get an electrode near your head could provide a real-time stream of data about what's going on inside of it. Neurable's technology uses a combination of electroencephalography (EEG) sensors to collect brain data and algorithms to interpret those signals. Beyond measuring attention, the company is now using that data to track and improve brain health.

I want to emphasize again that this technology does not actually read your mind in the sense of knowing your thoughts. But, it knows when you're entertained or distracted and could one day detect symptoms of depression or, on a much more consequential front, early signs of Alzheimer's disease.
I came across Neurable on a longer mission to understand the future of health-tracking technology by testing what's out there now. It's one that left me anxious, covered in smart rings and continuous glucose monitors, and more confused about the definition of well-being. That's because almost all health trackers that are popular on the market right now — Apple Watches, Oura Rings, Whoop Bands — are downstream sensors. They measure consequences, like elevated heart rate or body temperature, rather than the root cause of that state. By tapping directly into your brainwaves, a brain-computer interface can spot issues sometimes years before they would show up.
It could one day detect symptoms of depression or, on a much more consequential front, early signs of Alzheimer's disease.
'Biologically, your brain is designed to hide your weaknesses: It's an evolutionary effect,' Neurable's co-founder and CEO Ramses Alcaide, a neuroscientist, told me. 'But when you're measuring from the source, you pick up those things as they're occurring, instead of once there's finally downstream consequences, and that's the real advantage of measuring the brain.'
Other major tech companies are also exploring ways to incorporate non-invasive brain-computer interfaces into headphones. A couple years ago, Apple quietly patented an AirPod design that uses electrodes to monitor brain activity, and NextSense, which grew out of Google's moonshot division, wants to build earbud-based brain monitors for the mass market. There's also been a recent boom in activity around invasive brain-computer interfaces being developed by companies like Elon Musk's Neuralink and even Meta that surgically implant chips into people's brains. It's safe to say that's not currently a mass-market approach.
Still, while all of those mega market cap companies ponder the possibilities of their own brain-powered projects, Neurable's is on the market. It's on my head right now, actually, and it works.
The cutting edge of neurotech
The Master & Dynamic MW75 Neuro — the $700 pair of headphones I tested — looks like any other set of noise-canceling headphones, except for the badge that reads, 'Powered by Neurable AI.' When you connect them to the Neurable app is when things get fun.
Inside the Neurable app is a little video game that lets you fly a rocket ship with your brain — and serves as a proof of concept. The trick is you have to focus on a set of numbers on the screen. The more intensely you focus, the higher the numbers go, and the faster the rocket ship flies. If you start to get distracted by, say, thinking about flying an actual rocket ship, the numbers go down, and the rocket ship slows. It's one of the coolest innovations I've ever seen, if only because it's so simple.
The EEG sensors in Neurable's products can pick up a range of brainwave frequencies, which are associated with different behaviors and activities. The beta frequency band provides some information about attention state as well as anxiety, while alpha indicates a mind at rest.
While EEG sensors and brain-computer interfaces are most often seen in labs, putting these sensors into a device that people wear every day stands to transform our understanding of the mind. 'Non-invasive EEG is cheap and completely safe,' said Bin He, a professor of biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, whose lab built a drone you can fly with your mind over a decade ago. 'AI, or deep-learning technology, however has drastically improved the performance of [brain-computer interfaces] to read the minds of individuals.'
If you changed the technology's mission from measuring focus to, say, symptoms of depression, you could imagine how an everyday gadget could offer some life-changing interventions. The possibilities are as endless as the list of issues that can affect the brain. The Pentagon has been using Neurable's portable technology to study traumatic head injuries in soldiers, for instance, and that research could have practical applications in sports. Alcaide also mentioned Alzheimer's and Parkinson's as potential targets for their technology. Symptoms for these diseases don't appear for years after onset, but early markers could show up in the kind of EEG data their technology captures from everyday wear.

For now, however, the MW75 Neuro headphones are primarily used to sharpen your attention — with the new and added benefit of giving you a snapshot of your brain health. This involves starting a session with the headphones on and letting the sensors collect the electrical signals your brain's sending off. Your focus is measured as low, medium, or high, and when you're flagging for a while, the app will prompt you to take a break. You can also turn on a feature called Biofeedback, which plays music of varying intensity in order to nudge your focus toward the high range. The Brain Health reports are still in beta mode but will show you daily estimates of how you're doing in terms of things like anxiety resistance, cognitive speed, and wakefulness.
The way you know that the device isn't actually reading your mind comes down to science and a strong data policy. Neurable's technology picks up raw voltage — not actual thoughts — from your neurons and uses AI to decode the data and identify signals associated with focus, the company's co-founder Adam Molnar explained to me recently. Neurable encrypts and anonymizes the data coming out of your head and onto its sensors and then again when it goes to your phone, so it's far removed from any personal data. Furthermore, he said, Neurable has no ambitions to be a data company.
'Our business model doesn't depend on identity. We don't sell ads. So there's no benefit,' Molnar said. 'It's actually more of a liability for us to be able to have data map back to an individual.'
It's hard for me to say how much more productive I became thanks to the brain-reading headphones. As with many other health trackers, there's sort of a placebo cat effect: Simply deciding to track the behavior changed my state of mind and made me behave a certain way. So, setting up a focus session inevitably made me pay closer attention to how well I was focusing, how often I took breaks, and if I was choosing to be more mindful.
This is actually what makes me so curious about an earbud version of what Neurable's doing. I wear AirPods for most of the day, whether it's taking calls for work, listening to podcasts, or just drowning out the sounds outside my Brooklyn apartment. If these earbuds were also collecting data about my cognitive well-being during all those activities, I'd be interested in knowing what I could glean from that information, if only to better understand what's rotting my brain. And I'm sure plenty of companies would be happy to collect more data about their users' states of mind at any given time. Imagine if the TikTok algorithm knew you weren't interested in something — not because you swiped through it but rather because your brainwaves said so.
Neurable's website has mockups of EEG-equipped earbuds, helmets, and smart glasses, and it's clear that the company is eager to move beyond its first product. The company doesn't just want to make gadgets, either. It wants to be the leading platform for brain-powered technology. 'Just like Bluetooth is in every single device, and everyone should have access to Bluetooth, we believe that everyone should have access to neuro tech,' Alcaide told me.
We're years away from the most far-fetched applications of brain-computer interfaces, but we're heading in that direction.
'There's so many things you can do with neuro tech, whether it's tracking health conditions, whether it's controlling devices, whether it is understanding yourself better,' he said. 'It would be a disservice to the world if the only solutions that came out were our own.'
Neurable is indeed one of many startups trying to bring neuro tech to the masses, although they're the only ones selling a product I'd actually wear in public. Several other EEG-based gadgets out there take the form of headbands, many of which are geared toward sleep health or meditation. A company called Emotiv, which also partnered with Master & Dynamic, will start selling its own EEG-equipped earbuds this fall. It remains to be seen if and when Apple will make brain-reading AirPods, but they've already partnered with a brain interface startup called Synchron, which allows people to control iPhones with their minds (Haven't you always wanted to become one with your iPhone?).
This is where we circle back to the point where science fiction meets reality. We're years away from the most far-fetched applications of brain-computer interfaces, but we're heading in that direction. Whether that future ends up looking miraculous or like a Black Mirror episode is up to us — and to the companies, like Neurable, pioneering it.

NHC Reports Second Quarter 2025 Earnings

Mark Zuckerberg's unbelievably bleak AI vision

The future is Zuck, and all of us, using AI on our sunglasses, apparently. Allison Robbert/Bloomberg via Getty Images Of all the many famous Steve Jobs stories that tech industry folks like to share, perhaps the single most famous is his 1983 pitch to then-Pepsi president John Sculley to join Apple: 'Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world?' Like many things Jobs said, the pitch was wildly arrogant, self-important and self-aggrandizing, but ultimately correct. What Sculley did at Apple (mostly after firing Jobs) to sell the Macintosh and popularize personal, graphics-centered computing changed the world more than his invention of the Pepsi Challenge had. There really was a huge difference between selling Macs and selling sugar water. After listening to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg lay out his vision of how AI 'superintelligence' would change the world, though, my main reaction was: man, this guy just wants to sell us sugar water. 'Personal superintelligence'? Maybe just 'superintelligence,' it's cleaner In an Instagram video (of course) posted last week, Zuck explains that Meta's goal is to develop 'personal superintelligence for everyone,' accessed through devices like 'glasses that can see what we see, hear what we hear, and interact with us throughout the day.' 'A lot has been written about the scientific and economic advances that AI can bring,' he noted. 'And I'm really optimistic about this.' But his vision is 'different from others in the industry who want to direct AI at automating all of the valuable work': 'I think an even more meaningful impact in our lives is going to come from everyone having a personal superintelligence that helps you achieve your goals, create what you want to see in the world, be a better friend, and grow to become the person that you aspire to be.' The main reaction to this pitch I've seen from smart AI observers is: are you kidding? 'Superintelligence,' by definition, means a system that performs better than a human, sometimes vastly better, across most if not all domains. And the most ambitious thing Zuck can think of to make with that is… VR glasses? As Fortune's Sharon Goldman put it, while Steve Jobs called his computers 'a bicycle for the mind,' 'Zuckerberg, by contrast, imagines superintelligence as a pair of Ray-Bans that help you…be a better friend?' The lack of ambition in Zuckerberg's rhetoric is all the more striking when one considers the extreme ambition of his spending on AI. This year alone, he's hired former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman and veteran AI founder Daniel Gross; Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang (as part of a quasi-purchase of Scale, a massively important company whose training data is used by just about every AI company); Apple AI chief Ruoming Pang; and ChatGPT co-creator Shengjia Zhao, among several others. His hiring spree, and the gargantuan amounts he's willing to pay top talent, have roiled the sector for weeks now. At one competitor (former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab), Zuckerberg reportedly sent offers to more than a dozen of the company's 50 staffers, one of which was for over $1 billion over a few years, while the rest ranged from $200 million to $500 million over four years. Even for a company as rich as Meta, billion-plus offers for talent are unheard of. ($1 billion is how much Zuckerberg paid for all of Instagram in 2012.) It's a pretty vivid sign that Zuckerberg sees AI as the future of his business. But what does that future look like? I've seen the best digital minds of my generation wasted on Reels One could, very charitably, reason that Zuckerberg knows that a world of vastly superintelligent AI systems would lead to massive, far-reaching social ramifications that are not adequately summarized as 'you get smart sunglasses,' but he has concluded that most of his investors and customers aren't in a place to understand the gravity of those changes. Hence, talk about glasses. That could be what's happening, and I have some sympathy for his position if so. Trying to game out what a post-superintelligence world looks like is in fact extremely difficult, not least to those of us limited to mere human intellects. And it's usually scary — even if the changes ultimately prove positive. For all the uncertainty, there is no plausible world where people have access to 'personal superintelligence' and they and businesses do not use that to automate huge numbers of tasks, and there are a number of conceivable scenarios where that leads demand for human wage labor to totally collapse. Other scenarios see wages skyrocket. It's a tough situation for a CEO to message. But it's also worth considering the possibility that Zuckerberg means exactly what he's saying: that the AI systems his team is building are not meant to automate work but to provide a Meta-governed layer between individual human beings and the world outside of them. Facebook and Instagram are, in a sense, very crude versions of that layer, synthesizing and compressing the outside world into a digestible and addictive form people can consume throughout their days, and Zuckerberg's earlier obsession with the metaverse seemed a logical continuation. This approach has been immensely profitable. (Though, not so much the metaverse.) Imagine how much more profitable it'd be if a digital mind much smarter than Zuck's was designing it. Conversations like Zuckerberg's with the business writer Ben Thompson in May give credence to this interpretation. Zuckerberg sees four opportunities with AI: improving his products' recommendation algorithms to better target advertising, driving greater engagement on 'consumer surfaces' like Instagram Reels, 'business messaging' (i.e., businesses doing transactions through WhatsApp and Messenger, using AI), and lastly direct AI use à la ChatGPT. The promise of AI, to Zuckerberg, is that it can help him sell you more ads and convince you to spend more time watching Instagram brainrot. My reaction to that pitch was the same as AI writer Zvi Mowshowitz's: 'It was like if you took a left wing caricature of why Zuckerberg is evil, combined it with a left wing caricature about why AI is evil, and then fused them into their final form. Except it's coming directly from Zuckerberg, as explicit text, on purpose.' At least the sugar water from Pepsi tastes good. That the sixth largest company on Earth is devoting billions of dollars toward this vision is not, y'know, great. But it has a silver lining. One thing I've learned from talking to AI researchers over the years is that most of them are driven by a conviction that this thing they're building is really, really socially important. Sometimes that comes with a safety tinge ('this thing could kill us, and we need to make it so it doesn't'), sometimes with an accelerationist tinge ('this thing could liberate mankind from economic scarcity'), but either way it's usually stated with real conviction. If they only wanted money they'd go work for a hedge fund. But they also want to build something they're proud of. That character trait will, I think, cause the 'throw money at smart people until they all join' strategy that Zuckerberg is attempting to fail. If superintelligence is built, it will be built by a team that is productive due to a passionate, shared, optimistic vision for what a world with superintelligence will look like. It will be made because its makers want to change the world, not sell sugar water. A team of researchers joining primarily for the money, under a leader whose boldest vision is 'what if we sold more ads on sunglasses,' is not going to make it.

If you're using your Apple Watch to track sleep, here's 3 features you should be using
As a health and fitness editor, I'm constantly telling readers how important sleep is when it comes to our overall well-being. As a new mom, I'll tell anyone who'll listen about how little sleep I'm getting. But despite the constant sleep disturbances a toddler brings, I still track my sleep religiously. It fascinates me, and to me, it's as important as tracking my calorie burn or movement each day. However, it's only recently that I realized that through the fog of maternity leave, I'd missed some key updates to the sleep features on my Apple Watch 10, and that I wasn't quite using my watch to its full potential. If you're using one of the best Apple Watches to track your shut-eye each night, make sure you're using these three features before letting your head hit the pillow: Whether you're someone who reads before bed, listens to podcast or a music, or just sits doom-scrolling till it's time to brush your teeth, setting up a sleep schedule in the Health app can make a difference. Think of it as the adult equivalent of being tucked into your little sleep sack and read a bedtime story. While your Apple Watch can't read you the Gruffalo (yet), it can give you wind down reminders as your bedtime approaches. Plus, you can set a different bedtime schedule for the weekend if, unlike me, you have a life. The Apple Watch will also switch automatically into Sleep mode when your bedtime approaches, turning off any notifications across all your Apple devices. It's also great if you're someone who forgets to turn on this mode before bed, as your Apple Watch needs to be in Sleep focus to track your sleep. If you've set a sleep schedule, you'll also get a little morning report from Apple, which is one of my favorite features on the best Garmin watches. Your watch will say Good Morning as you wake up, turn off any alarms you've set if you've woken (or been woken) before it went off, and show you the weather forecast for the day. The Vitals app allows you to spot changes in your health before they occur. The Vitals app knew I was coming down with a nasty bout of mastitis before I felt any different physically — it spotted my heart rate and temperature were raised, and it alerted me that I had two health outliers. Of course, it didn't stop me getting sick, but it encouraged me to take it easy, and not head out for a morning run thinking I'd just not slept well. When using the Vitals app, you'll immediately see a breakdown of your health metrics in your Apple Watch stack each morning, including a summary of your sleep stages from the previous night. As well as your sleep duration, you can see your nightly heart rate, respiratory rate and wrist temperature, and get notified if these metrics are outside your typical range. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. When you've worn your Apple Watch to sleep, you'll see a graph of your sleep, showing how much time you've spent in REM, Core, and Deep sleep stages, as well as how much time you've spent awake overnight. Each sleep stage is important — REM is where you experience dreaming, during the Core phase, muscle activity decreases and your body temperature drops, and Deep sleep has a restorative effect on the body. How long you spend in each stage will be personal to you, but learning more about your sleep patterns can help you make small tweaks to ensure you're getting the best sleep possible. Deep sleep, for example, can be affected by screen time, stress, caffeine and alcohol. Ok, so this isn't really on the Apple Watch, but it's an update I'd missed but have since become hooked on. If, like me, you need some sort of white noise to drift off, you can now add Ambient Music to the Control Center of your iPhone. To do this, open Control Center, and tap the add button in the top left corner. Click Add a Control at the bottom of the screen and scroll down to the Ambient Music section. From here, you can choose four different categories of music — Sleep, Chill, Productivity, and Wellbeing. There are different playlists to choose from, but it's a nice way to unwind as you get into bed. I'd also be remiss to not mention Apple Fitness Plus here, and the Sleep Meditations on the platform. Similar to that bedtime story I mentioned earlier, if I have been working late into the evening, these inject 10 minutes of deep breathing and calm into my bedtime routine.
