explosion at the Bukit Minyak Industrial Area in Penang yesterday.
IWK said its operations team was deployed immediately after the incident to assess the situation and implement safety measures.
The affected area has been barricaded.
In a statement today, IWK said the investigation revealed signs of illegal chemical discharge from a nearby factory, based on the presence of the unusual gas in the sewer network.
It said it has notified the environment department and the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), and requested their assistance in identifying the source of the chemical spill.
Although the sewer line remains operational with no blockages or structural damage, the blast displaced a manhole cover and damaged a road culvert. The manhole has since been temporarily secured.
A CCTV inspection of the sewer system will be conducted once clearance is given by the relevant authorities, it said.
Penang fire and rescue department assistant director John Sagun Francis confirmed that no injuries were reported.
The single explosion occurred at about 11.30am along Lengkok Perindustrian Bukit Minyak 2, causing damage to the road.
A hazmat (hazardous materials) unit confirmed there were no further threats, and recorded neutral readings from the sewer fluid.

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 — A principal assistant director at a government department has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on suspicion of soliciting bribes and receiving sponsorships for overseas trips from several companies and individuals. A four-day remand order against the suspect, who is in his 40s, was issued by Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin at the Magistrate's Court here this morning following MACC's application. According to a MACC source, the man was arrested at about 6.30pm yesterday when he appeared to give his statement at the Putrajaya MACC office. 'Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect solicited and accepted sponsorships from various companies and individuals to finance his trips to several overseas destinations between March 2023 and January 2025. 'These trips were related to the Dubai Orchid Export Farm Project, estimated at RM125 million, with the total value of the sponsored trips exceeding RM50,000,' the source said. Putrajaya MACC director Azizul Ahmad Sarkawi confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. In a separate case, a female insurance agent was remanded for her involvement in a fake investment scheme that deceived 22 investors out of RM21 million. The suspect, in her 40s was arrested at MACC headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday and remanded for five days until August 24. Preliminary investigations revealed the funds were never received by the cooperative, and the investors were given fake investment certificates. Another child bullying case rocks Johor after apartment CCTV footage goes viral, cops investigating
JOHOR BARU, Aug 20 — Police are investigating another case of bullying involving children after a video showing a seeming assault at Molek Ria Apartment in Jalan Persiaran Bumi here went viral. Seri Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the incident took place at about 2.03pm last Friday at one of the apartment blocks. 'Based on the report lodged by the victim's 33-year-old mother, her son was kicked in the stomach by another boy believed to also live in the same residential area,' he said in a media statement today. Police did not disclose the age of the victim. Mohd Sohaimi said the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt. He added that the offence carries a penalty of up to one year's imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both if convicted. 'Police remind the public to avoid any speculation or to spread unverified information regarding the case which could cause unnecessary panic,' he said. The one-minute, 24-second CCTV footage, recorded at the block's void deck, shows a young boy waiting for his mother when a group of boys approaches him. One of them then kicks him in the stomach. The video was later uploaded on Facebook, prompting the victim's mother to lodge a police report.
