Diamondbacks hold off Braves for 3rd straight win

Reutersa day ago

June 5 - Merrill Kelly allowed only one hit over seven scoreless innings and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks held on to defeat the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Wednesday for their third straight win.
Kelly (6-2) allowed one walk and struck out eight. He did not allow a base runner until Marcell Ozuna walked to lead off the fifth inning. Atlanta's first hit came with two out in the sixth on a line drive single by Ronald Acuna Jr.
Arizona has won the first two games of the three-game set and takes a 3-2 edge in the season series. The Braves have lost three in a row.
Atlanta starter Chris Sale (3-4) worked six innings and allowed one run on three hits, four walks and 10 strikeouts -- giving him 2,510 for his career and passing Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson for 39th on the all-time strikeout list. It was Sale's first career loss to the Diamondbacks.
Arizona scored in the third inning. Geraldo Perdomo worked a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out single by Lourdes Gurriel Jr., which extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The Diamondbacks added another run in the ninth off Raisel Iglesias. Tim Tawa doubled and scored on Ketel Marte's RBI single.
The Braves came up empty on a threat in the eighth. The first two batters reached against reliever Ryan Thompson, but he struck out Drake Baldwin before being lifted for closer Justin Martinez. He fanned Michael Harris II on three pitches, intentionally walked Ronald Acuna Jr., and struck out Austin Riley to end the inning.
Martinez allowed a run in the ninth, walking Baldwin with the bases loaded, but ended the game by striking out Harris to earn his fifth save. Four of Martinez' five outs were strikeouts.
Atlanta reliever Daysbel Hernandez had to leave the game in the eighth with a blister on his right hand.
The start of the game was delayed by an hour and six minutes because of rain.

Sean O'Malley to have surprise cornerman in UFC 316 rematch with Merab Dvalishvili

In September, Dvalishvili comprehensively outwrestled the striking specialist to win the belt, before retaining the gold with a comeback decision win against Umar Nurmagomedov in January. O'Malley, meanwhile, has not fought since his loss to the Georgian and hopes he will be coming in fresh for this rematch in New Jersey, where his father will be part of his corner team. 'It's a cool gift to be able to give your dad,' said the American, 30, at the UFC 316 pre-fight press conference on Thursday (5 June). 'His 60th birthday, he's gonna be sitting there cageside, watching me fight. There's nothing better I could give to him. I'm excited for him to be in there.' Dvalishvili, 34, initially gave credit to O'Malley for being humble ahead of their second showdown, although the champion changed his tune as the press conference progressed. 'This is a new fight, this is a new challenge,' said Dvalishvili, who has won 12 straight fights, dating back to 2018. 'Like Sean said, he will be 70 per cent better. I am expecting him to be a better version of himself than last time. I know now he's humbled, but he wants to knock me out, and I'm here to not let him do that. 'I'm gonna break him. After, we can be friends, no problem, but 7 June, we are enemies again. I'm gonna show a better fight and break him. 'This is the fight business, and of course I'm ready for everything. He's a tough fighter, he has 10 wins in the UFC, and wherever it goes, I'm gonna make sure I'm gonna win. I'm not gonna give my belt to him; this is mine, and I'm gonna keep it. We can be friends after. Let's go.' However, after O'Malley said, 'Come Sunday, no one's gonna give a f*** about Merab. You know, I truly believe I'm gonna knock Merab out,' the Georgian fired back: 'Keep talking, and you're gonna get more humbled. 'I'm making people humble, you will see 7 June. He was playing all this time like a humble guy, but okay: I'll show you again, one more time. Keep talking.' Earlier in the press conference, O'Malley said: 'This is a completely different fight, but [I'm] undefeated in rematches, we're gonna keep it that way. Merab's mastered his skillset, no excuses, he won the first fight. We're fighting again, that's it.' O'Malley's only career defeats have come against Dvalishvili in September and Marlon Vera in 2020. Sugar Sean avenged his stoppage defeat by Vera with a clinic in March 2024 to retain the 135lb title on points. That result was O'Malley's only successful title defence, after he won the belt with a knockout of Aljamain Sterling in 2023.

Jiujitsu student gets $56m payout after he's paralyzed from neck down by instructor who 'crushed him'

A beginner jiujitsu student has been awarded $56million after an in-class accident he attended left him paralyzed from the neck down. In 2018, white-belt Jack Greener, 30, was sparring with second-degree black-belt teacher Francisco Iturralde when his cervical vertebrae was crushed during a terrifying move. Greener sued the Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club in California, owned by Michael Phelps, on the grounds that the premises was responsible for the fractured neck and spinal cord injury he received that he claimed forever altered his life. Greener underwent surgery soon after the accident and, over the course of the next seven years, recovered. He's now a mountain climber and motivational speaker. In 2023, an appellate district court awarded Greener $46million in damages, which the jiu-jitsu studio appealed at the California Supreme Court - but it declined to overturn the judgement. Now, with interest, the studio's been ordered to pay a total of $56million. Greener previously attended classes at a different school but stopped because it was too far from his home, according to the court judgement. The student then started classes at the Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club in early November 2018, and he sparred with his instructor at the end of a class later than month. Greener was in the 'turtle position' with his elbows and knees on the floor when, he claimed, Iturralde 'lost control and injured' him. Iturralde testified that Greener seemed highly experienced for a white belt and had expressed a desire to be competitive. He admitted that the move was 'dangerous' and he wouldn't execute it if he 'could not safely' do so. Owner Phelps and instructor Iturralde pushed back and said students should assume risk when participating in combat sports, but the court maintained that the black-belt instructors should be held to a higher standard than their student counterparts. When they appealed the decision to the state Supreme Court, it recently declined to review the case. Greener's used his story to motivate others and documented his journey to become one of only two people with his disability to go above 14,000ft on foot when he climbed Mount Bross in Colorado, according to his website. In January 2019, he started to regain movement and could walk with the help of a cane. He then set out to be the first with his condition to ascend Mount Whitney in California, with its elevation of 14,505ft. Last November, Greener posted a reflection on his Instagram about the six years since he was paralyzed. He said: 'Six years to infinity. The PTSD of the actual situation has all but healed. Having spent April 23 to now mending the prior four years. Which, to be honest, is pretty cool. And I'm left to mend the remaining pieces as it pertains to courtrooms, suits, and ties. 'Honestly, I've not achieved much of anything in 2024 and have seemingly regressed in career, finances, etc. Much of it out of my control. But that's OK, progress and growth isn't linear. 'The good news is I have a few doors in front of me and, relatively speaking, I'm happy and secure. So here's to hoping the right doors open.'
