Olympic star Dahlmeier dead after climbing accident
The 31-year-old German was caught in rockfall during an expedition in the Karakoram mountains on Monday.
Her climbing partner, Marina Eva, called emergency services after the accident, which occurred at about 5,700 metres (18,700 feet).
Rescue teams, containing expert climbers from Germany and the United States, immediately began a rescue mission but their searches were hindered by adverse weather conditions.
Dahlmeier's management company confirmed on Wednesday that she had died.
"A recovery operation was launched but ultimately called off on the evening of 29 July," her representatives told Germany's Die Welt newspaper.
Her management said that Dahlmeier had likely died on 28 July - the day of the accident.
"It was Laura Dahlmeier's express and written will that in a case like this, no-one should risk their life to recover her," they said.
"It was her wish to leave her body behind on the mountain in this case. This is also in line with the wishes of her relatives."
The German Olympic Sports Confederation said Dahlmeier was "more than an Olympic champion - she was someone with heart, attitude and vision".
International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry said Dahlmeier's death is "deeply shocking for all of us in the Olympic movement".
She added: "She lost her life in her beloved mountains. She will be remembered forever."
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Dahlmeier was an "ambassador for our country around the world and a role model for peaceful, joyful and fair coexistence across borders".
Dahlmeier, an experienced mountaineer, represented Germany at two Winter Olympics, winning two golds and one bronze medal in Pyeongchang in 2018.
She was the first woman to win the sprint and pursuit events at the same Games and won a further 15 medals, including seven gold, across five World Championships before retiring from competition in May 2019.

Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested after an alleged incident at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, according to a police report obtained by USA TODAY Sports. According to the report, Richardson was arrested for domestic violence on Sunday. Richardson and a male companion were involved in a verbal altercation as they exited through airport security, the police report states. Richardson allegedly pushed the man and he fell into a nearby column, according to the Seattle Police Department. The report states police viewed airport security footage. On that video, the report says, the man attempted to walk away from Richardson, but she continued to allegedly bump into him, the report says. Police also say Richardson threw a pair of headphones at the man. Richardson was booked at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington, on Sunday and released on Monday, jail records show. 'We are aware of the report and we have no comment at this time,' USA Track and Field said to USA TODAY Sports. Richardson ran a 11.07 and finished second in her heat in the 100 meters to advance to Friday's semifinal at the U.S. track and field championships. She's withdrawn from the 100 semifinal and will also not run in the 200. The U.S. championships serves as a qualifing meet for the world championships. Richardson has a bye into the 100 at this year's world championships because she is the defending champion. Richardson earned a silver medal in the 100 at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She was also a part of Team USA's gold-medal winning 4x100-relay team. Richardson is one of the most recognizable American track and field athletes. Manchester United have struggled to find consistent form up front, while Newcastle's ambitions to crack the Champions League spots hinge on bolstering their offensive firepower. Woltemade, with his blend of youth and end product, fits both profiles perfectly. Yet as Falk confirms, the forward is simply not keen on leaving his homeland — not yet. One to Watch in Future Windows While a move to England looks unlikely this summer, it would be premature to rule it out altogether. Players' preferences shift, and the Premier League remains one of the most attractive leagues in the world. Newcastle and Manchester United would be wise to keep close tabs on Woltemade's development. If Bayern falter or Stuttgart dig their heels in beyond the current window, opportunities may yet arise. For now though, Bundesliga remains his chosen battleground. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Newcastle United fan's perspective, there's no shame in missing out on a player who clearly isn't ready to leave his comfort zone just yet. Nick Woltemade's numbers speak for themselves — 12 goals and 9 assists at just 23 is the kind of profile we've been crying out for. He could've been the perfect foil for Isak or even played alongside him in a dynamic two-pronged attack. The club's ambitions to push for top-four again, especially with the added pressure of European football, mean we need rotation-ready talent who won't take half a season to adapt. Woltemade, with Bundesliga pedigree and international recognition, looked an ideal fit on paper. But if the lad's heart is set on Bayern, then there's little point in chasing shadows. That said, it's encouraging to see the club linked with players of this calibre. A few seasons ago, Newcastle would not have been in conversations with talents also being eyed by Bayern Munich and Manchester United. What's more, should the Bayern deal fall through and he sees another year in Stuttgart, perhaps a strong European campaign by the Magpies could tilt his head come 2026. Either way, the scouting department deserve credit — it's the right profile, the right timing, but unfortunately not the right moment. Not yet.
