Top 10 African countries with the strongest currencies in April 2025
As the world navigates yet another chapter of economic uncertainty, typified by increased protectionism and a fresh round of tariff wars, particularly between the United States and China, African countries find themselves at a critical juncture.
Business Insider Africa presents the top 10 African countries with the strongest currencies in April 2025.
This list is courtesy of the Forbes currency calculator.
Tunisian Dinar ranks number 1 on the list.
While Africa may not be the main player in the present trade hostilities, the continent is undoubtedly within the cross fire of the consequences.
In this climate, one of the most powerful tools an African country can use is a strong, stable currency.
A strong currency is more than simply a sign of national pride, it is a barrier against foreign shocks, a magnet for investment, and a crucial lever for strategic economic progress.
When global powers impose tariffs on one another, the outcome is generally increased costs for commodities as supply chains are disrupted and corporations rush to get resources from alternate markets.
For African nations that rely significantly on imports, whether it's gasoline, machinery, medicines, or food, a strong domestic currency functions as a cushion.
It helps keep import costs under control, protecting local customers from abrupt price hikes.
As global tariffs increase uncertainty in trade pricing, African nations with strong currencies can better safeguard their economies against pass-through inflation.
Developing currency strength is not simple. It requires a disciplined fiscal strategy, export diversification, political stability, and strong central bank independence.
However, for those African states that can handle it, the payoff is enormous, especially today, as the world's economic tectonics change and resilience becomes the new currency of power.
With that said, here are the strongest currencies currently according to the Forbes currency converter, last updated on the 22nd of April 2025.
For this month, the Tunisian Dinar, Moroccan Dirham, Seychellois Rupee, and Ghanaian Cedi, posted stronger values than the month prior.
Save the Eritrean Nakfa, which remained the same month-on-month, every other currency on the list got a little weaker this month.

Zambia courts carmakers for EV parts manufacturing near copper sites
Zambia has engaged in discussions with automakers to attract electric vehicle (EV) component manufacturers to set up plants close to its copper mining sites. Zambia aims to attract EV component manufacturers near its copper mines. Copper is crucial for EV engines, boosting Zambia's role in the supply chain. Finance Minister Musokotwane encourages investments during international discussions. Zambia has engaged in discussions with automakers to attract electric vehicle (EV) component manufacturers to set up plants close to its copper mining sites. The southern African country is Africa's second-largest copper producer, and copper is a vital material used in electric vehicle (EV) engines, according to Bloomberg. 'We have been talking, even last week when I was in Germany, telling these companies to please consider the manufacture of some of your electric-vehicle components in Zambia, ' Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane said. 'Those components can then be shipped to your factories in South Africa which now exports to the rest of the world. That is a powerful way of value addition.' Rising investor confidence The country has already made progress in attracting EV companies. Last year, Build Your Dreams (BYD), World's largest electric manufacturer, expanded into Zambia through a partnership with Pilatus Electric Mobility Zambia Limited (PEM). The move signals growing investor interest in Zambia's role in the global EV supply chain. Zambia's government intends to maintain prudent fiscal policies even after its current International Monetary Fund (IMF) program ends in October, according to Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane. He noted that the cabinet has not decided whether to pursue a new loan. Speaking at Bloomberg's annual Africa Business Media Innovators conference, Musokotwane also criticized the sudden withdrawal of some U.S. aid programs to Zambia and the broader African continent. However, he acknowledged that such support was always expected to decline gradually.

Scottish Languages Bill to give parents right to request new Gaelic-medium schools
Parents across Scotland are to be given the right to request that a Gaelic medium school be established in their area, the Scottish Government has confirmed. Legislation being taken forward by ministers would see local councils required to assess if requests are practical and affordable, with the government then able to direct the authority to proceed with the establishment of a new Gaelic school if assessments show that it would be viable. The plans have been confirmed by Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes MSP, who is also Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Gaelic, during a visit to Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis (Inverness Gaelic Primary School). The announcement coincides with the 40th anniversary of Gaelic medium education in Scotland. The proposed Scottish Languages Bill is expected to be considered by MSPs on Tuesday 17 June. As well as establishing the right of parents to request new Gaelic-medium schools, the Bill will allow for the creation of 'areas of linguistic significance in Gaelic communities which the government says will enable ministers to 'better target policies to support the language's growth.' The new law will also establish both Gaelic and Scots as official languages, introduce specific education standards for Gaelic and Scots, and enable parents across Scotland to apply for Gaelic-medium nursery provision for their children. Recent census statistics revealed that more than 130,000 people in Scotland have some Gaelic skills, a significant increase from the levels found in 2011. The number who understand or use Scots had also risen considerably. A world-first assessment and accreditation model for Gaelic learners is also due to be introduced in Scotland following development by Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture. A new strategy to support the development of Gaelic outside of school classrooms is also in development. However, there is a significant drop-off in uptake of Gaelic between primary and secondary school levels, and experts have previously warned that more must be done to promote the 'value of Gaelic' to parents and young people. READ MORE Scottish Government confirms extra £2m funding for new Glasgow Gaelic primary school 'We want to see Gaelic thriving': Council to launch free Gaelic language courses Dictionary detailing origins of every Gaelic word secures share of £500,000 During the visit to Inverness, Ms Forbes said: 'This Bill aims to build a strong foundation to support Gaelic's continued growth following an encouraging increase in Gaelic speakers and learners across Scotland. It would boost Gaelic education provision throughout Scotland and better establish Gaelic and Scots as national languages. 'Gaelic medium education enriches communities and offers good value for money. Gaelic medium schools frequently demonstrate above average performance with some local authorities showing better grades across all qualification levels despite costs being no greater than English medium schools. 'To support the growth of Scotland's indigenous languages, we are also providing an additional £5.7 million to promote Scots and Gaelic this year.' The Bill and its provision are also supported by Scotland's Makar (national poet) Dr Peter Mackay, who writes in both English and Gaelic: 'It's fantastic to have seen the growth of Gaelic medium education over the last 40 years: it's something we should be very proud of. 'It's vital that there's ongoing support to maintain and develop Gaelic as a community language in the Highlands and Islands and to give people all over the country every chance to learn and speak it – and also to encourage Scots speakers and communities across Scotland."

Hyundai pitches hybrids as ‘Best of Both Worlds' in Paris, Texas
This story was originally published on Marketing Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Marketing Dive newsletter. Hyundai launched a marketing campaign, 'Best of Both Worlds,' in support of its Sante Fe and Tuscon hybrid vehicles, per a press release. Two ad spots and two long-form videos feature a French cowboy who lives in Paris, Texas and drives Hyundai's hybrids. A separate campaign, 'He Got Money,' focuses on fuel savings and is targeted at an African-American audience. The campaigns, from Innocean USA and Culture Brands, respectively, come as the automaker has seen hybrid vehicle sales increase 44% so far in 2025, despite ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty. Hyundai is going all-in on its hybrid vehicles with a pair of ads that mix humor and value propositions like performance and savings. The automaker has seen a big boost in hybrid vehicle sales, with total hybrid vehicle sales jumping 5% in May, per details shared with Marketing Dive. The 'Best of Both Worlds' effort focuses on Jean-Luc, a cowboy born in Paris, France who lives in Paris, Texas. A 30-second 'Cowboy' spot which debuted on June 8 during the NBA finals focuses on the Sante Fe Hybrid and shows how the titular character can have 'more cheese' on his plate by saving on fuel. 'Mosey' focuses on the Tucson Hybrid and will air later this month. In addition, a long-form YouTube spot has a cinematic feel, albeit one drawn more from Westerns and not Wim Wenders' art house classic 'Paris, Texas.' However, the campaign was filmed on location in the Texas town, and Hyundai will donate an estimated $30,000 from production to support local schools in the community. Created by Innocean with media by Canvas, 'Best of Both Worlds' will run across broadcast, digital and programmatic platforms, with custom digital content on TikTok, Meta, Reddit, YouTube and beyond. In a separate but related effort, Hyundai continued its series of 'Okay Hyundai' ads with 'He Got Money.' The 30-second ad focuses on a character who owns a hybrid and the gossip about his seemingly extravagant lifestyle, which — in a nod to ongoing price pressures — includes a fridge full of eggs. 'He Got Money' will run across broadcast and digital platforms in both 15- and 30-second formats and will be featured in influencer partnerships. The ad, which is targeted at an African-American audience, features Kathleen Bradley — best known as Mrs. Parker from the cult classic "Friday' — and is from Hyundai's African American agency of record, Culture Brands. ''He Got Money' shows how the Tucson Hybrid empowers drivers to enjoy more of what matters—style, comfort, and community—thanks to real savings at the pump,' said Erik Thomas, director of experiential and multicultural marketing, Hyundai Motor America, in a press release. Hyundai's increased hybrid sales follow the automaker becoming the launch partner of Amazon Autos late last year. One global auto brand moved approximately $80 million in annual ad spend from The Trade Desk to Amazon's ad platform by the end of Q1, partially due to its ability to sell its cars via the online retailer, Adweek reported. Hyundai is currently the only automaker that has that functionality on Amazon. Recommended Reading Mattel's Hot Wheels ignites 'challenger spirit' with cinematic ad
