Die Walküre review — brilliantly imagined Wagner (with extra zombies)
Twenty months is a long time to wait for the second instalment of a serialised thriller. But even before the music of Die Walküre starts, Barrie Kosky — directing the Royal Opera's unfolding cycle of Wagner's Ring — reminds us of the main talking point of Das Rheingold, the first instalment. That naked old lady, representing Earth in all its exhausted vulnerability, is back.
Again she covers her eyes in despair. Again she will be a mute witness on this epic journey to the world's end. And again that journey is evoked by Kosky with a startling theatricality that goes hand in glove with Antonio Pappano's vivid conducting of the music and the Royal Opera orchestra's magnificent playing.

But one former contestant has now broken his silence, and what he says about the show might just make you see it in a different way. ''The judges are actors', he claimed. 'It was a reality TV show but nothing is real... Everything is planned in advance and my contact with Louis was just for cameras.' He also went on to reveal his vocal coach felt more of a mentor than his mentor Louis. During his time on the show, critics launched an internet campaign for him to win the show, just as a way to 'p*ss off Simon'. But his journey came to an end, when he was voted out in sixth place after a sing off with Mary Byrne. He went on to say that his vocal coach felt more like a mentor than Louis Walsh and he's not even convinced the judges even picked the songs. 'I'm sure the producers would pick the songs for us,' he said And the critique is allegedly just as scripted. Wagner claimed producers would ask the vocal coaches for feedback and then hand it over to the judges to deliver on air. 'They would look at the camera, but every now and then they would look away and read the script. Some would look more than others!' he said He also suggested the panel - once made up of Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh - slowly changed into "anyone can be a judge". 'The script was to make sure the entertainment would keep going because they couldn't rely on the judges to be witty or quick thinking.' At the time, Simon claimed an the attempt to derail the show had failed. 'There were people out there trying to derail this show, we've put this show back in the hands of the public.' But Wagner says otherwise 'It's not democracy, it's showbusiness', he said. 'They knew that they wanted to promote One Direction and everybody else were just extras in the play.' He claimed that on the day he was sent home, a merchandising staff member told him he'd sold out of his official merchandise and had been leading the vote; however there is no suggestion the votes were rigged. Wagner also revealed that Louis faked interactions between the pair. In every episode, Louis kept mispronouncing his name, saying it like Wag-nah rather than the correct Vawg-ner. 'It was a joke that Louis agreed with me!" Wagner explained. "He said 'I'm gonna call you Wagner all the time and you're gonna say Louis, my name is Vawg-ner'". He said: 'That was fun and it was Louis' idea. It was smart.' However despite his claims, it is clear The X Factor helped to launch household names like Little Mix, Olly Murs and Alexandra Burke. But over the years, stories emerged about the show's darker side - with some former stars alleging scenes were staged to boost ratings. Despite missing out on the top spot, Wagner made the most of his fame - raking in cash from personalised video messages for fans. 'From the videos I would get £100,000 a year', he said. But when the money started to dry up, he switched careers - trying his hand at running a hair transplant in Brazil. It wasn't for him, and he eventually returned to the UK to launch his band - Kings with Wings: The Wagner Rock Band - a name inspired by his love of birdwatching. 'I got lots of bookings', he said, 'but I felt so awkward singing She Bangs, because my God, that is a stupid song but people love it.' Now, Wagner is writing his own setlist performing great songs by legends like The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Marley.

New Nintendo patent sparks talk of Ring Fit Adventure 2 on Switch 2
There are suspicions that Nintendo is planning another Ring Fit Adventure for the Switch 2, although the best evidence in its favour is the first game's sales numbers. When it comes to which Nintendo franchises will see new sequels on Nintendo Switch 2, there are plenty that are guaranteed to happen, such as Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and Fire Emblem. Others aren't so certain, but while we all have our dream picks for Switch 2 sequels (our fingers and toes are crossed for some kind of follow-up to the Advance Wars remake), some fans think they know one such sequel that's planned for the system. The sequel in question is a successor to Ring Fit Adventure and the theory comes courtesy of a new Nintendo patent for a video game controller accessory. As a reminder, Ring Fit Adventure was made as the Switch equivalent to Wii Fit, though its attempts to encourage you to exercise are far more gamified, as it's essentially a fully blown role-playing game. It comes bundled with a special accessory called the Ring-Con (essentially a Pilates ring) and a leg strap that you have to slot the Switch's Joy-Cons into, and it's suspected that Nintendo plans on making a new iteration of it. The patent in question was first spotted by, appropriately enough, Bluesky account Nintendo Patent Watch. Nintendo registered the patent a couple of weeks ago on May 23, and it only went public this week on June 3. While there are no images accompanying the filing, Nintendo Patent Watch writes that that's because they're being 'deferred' for up to 30 months, which lends credence to the idea that this is a new product that Nintendo hasn't announced yet. At the very least, the filing describes it as a video game controller accessory and though there's no mention of the Switch 2, it's hard to imagine it being for anything else. But why do some fans think it's related to Ring Fit Adventure? That's because the filing also identifies the designer of the accessory and it's one Fumiyoshi Suetake, one of the key figures responsible for the creation of the Ring-Con. On top of that, Nintendo Patents Watch reports that Nintendo has previously filed for extensions on its patent for the Ring-Con – once in the US in 2023 and again in Japan in 2024 – which suggests it wants to maintain legal protection for it. The last bit of evidence comes from Foxconn, a Taiwanese manufacturer and longtime partner for Nintendo. During an investor's conference this past May, the company discussed plans for developing technology for video game consoles and peripherals, like controllers. One such example was force sensing technology for 'detecting force under different actions,' with the accompanying graphic looking awfully similar, if not identical, to the Ring-Con. None of these discoveries necessarily guarantee that a Ring Fit Adventure 2 is in development, but there is one piece of evidence that's much easier to put faith in: Ring Fit Adventure's sales. More Trending It may not have reached the same heights as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but it was still a very successful game for Nintendo. Its last recorded sales figures put it at 15.38 million units sold in its lifetime and that was in 2023, so it'll be even higher by now. Part of this can be attributed to the game launching in late 2019, which meant it could take advantage of lockdown , which kept people from getting their exercise outside. Considering Nintendo has had a new exercise game for every home console it's made since the Wii, it'd also in keeping with the company's general strategy to have a Ring Fit Adventure successor on Switch 2. Not to mention that while the Ring-Con is compatible with the Switch 2, you still have to use the Switch 1 Joy-Cons. So, Nintendo may want a new accessory that will work with the Switch 2 Joy-Cons. Joseph Parker eyes fight with rival on Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois undercard
The New Zealander has not fought since knocking out Martin Bakole, but despite seemingly being next in line for a world title fight, Parker wants to stay busy Joseph Parker has expressed his interest in a trilogy showdown with long-time rival Derek Chisora. The New Zealander has been out of the ring since his stunning knockout win over Martin Bakole in February. While holding the provisional WBO title, he is eagerly awaiting the outcome of Oleksandr Usyk 's rematch with Daniel Dubois - which is scheduled to take place on July 19. The much-anticipated face-off between Usyk and Dubois is set to be held at Wembley Stadium, with all four major world titles on the line. In a bid to ensure the Kiwi heavyweight remains active, promoter Frank Warren has indicated that Parker's next fight could come as early as September. Eyeing an opportunity to remain sharp for the winner of Usyk vs Dubois, the 33-year-old reckons a trilogy clash with Chisora would fit the bill. Speaking to the Ring, Parker said: "I'd like to be out ASAP. I know Usyk and Dubois are fighting on July 19, I'd like to either fight not long after that, or it'd be great if I could be on the same card." "That's been floated by Queensberry, so it'd be nice. Who do I fight? I'm not sure. The belts are held up at the moment. Usyk and Dubois have the belts, and whoever wins, who knows what kind of rematch clauses are in the contract. It'd be nice to fight anyone. It'd be nice to fight someone like Derek Chisora. He is looking for his 50th fight, and I'm not sure if he's going to fight for a title." Parker expressed interest in a potential trilogy fight against Chisora, saying: "I know I've beaten him twice, but I've never had a trilogy in my career, so Derek always brings it, and it could be a good sort of fight to keep me busy." The Kiwi had previously defeated Chisora twice in 2021. Since then, Chisora has regained form, recently winning an IBF world title eliminator against Otto Wallin, making him mandatory for a title shot. Parker is open to facing Chisora but also mentioned a possible rematch with Dillian Whyte, who beat him in 2018, as an alternative. Parker added: "There's also Dillian Whyte. Fabio Wardley is fighting Justis Huni this weekend, or very soon. There's many options out there. I know [Martin] Bakole wants a rematch, too. But I think it would be awesome to fight on the undercard of Usyk and Dubois. I'll fight anyone. Like I said, if there's no one else to fight, Derek Chisora is always keen. He's always up for it but he's also got a great following, and he's looking for his 50th fight."
