What is Hasbara? Understanding "Israel's" propaganda machine

Roya News01-04-2025
Since launching its military campaign on Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, the Israeli Occupation has deployed a powerful propaganda strategy to control the narrative surrounding the war.
Central to this effort is "Hasbara," a Hebrew term meaning "explaining," which serves as the Israeli Occupation's tool for managing public perception and justifying its actions.
- The origins and evolution of Hasbara-
The concept of Hasbara was popularized in the early 20th century by Polish Zionist journalist Nahum Sokolow. Over time, it evolved into a sophisticated public diplomacy initiative designed to promote "Israel's" policies while downplaying or justifying its military actions. Today, Hasbara manifests through official government statements, viral social media campaigns, and coordinated messaging efforts in mainstream media.
A key function of Hasbara is to frame the Israeli Occupation Forces' (IOF) military operations in a way that shifts blame for civilian casualties onto Hamas. This is achieved through repeated claims that Palestinian fighters use hospitals, schools, and residential areas as military sites, a tactic "Israel" describes as 'human shields.'
While the Israeli Occupation has presented satellite imagery and alleged confessions from detainees to support these claims, independent verification of such evidence remains elusive.
- Modernizing Hasbara -
Over the past two decades, the Israeli Occupation has modernized Hasbara to align with the digital age.
Following the 2006 Lebanon War and the 2008-2009 offensive on Gaza, the Israeli Occupation government intensified efforts to expand its influence online. By 2012, social media had become a major battleground, with the IOF launching digital campaigns to bolster the country's global image.
During subsequent military operations, including the 2014 war on Gaza, Hasbara proponents aggressively promoted content portraying "Israel" as a victim of Palestinian aggression, despite its overwhelming military superiority.
Today, the Israeli Occupation is attempting to rebrand Hasbara and label their efforts "public diplomacy."
- Weaponizing public perception -
One of the most striking aspects of Hasbara is its ability to shape global opinion by leveraging social justice narratives.
"Israel" frequently portrays itself as the Middle East's only democracy, championing LGBTQ+ rights and environmental causes as part of its international image. Critics argue that this strategy, known as "pinkwashing" and "veganwashing," is designed to distract from accusations of human rights violations and occupation policies.
Furthermore, Hasbara plays a significant role in countering international movements critical of "Israel", such as the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign. "Israeli" officials have worked to equate criticism of "Israel's" policies with anti-Semitism, a tactic that has led to legislative efforts in Western countries to penalize BDS supporters.
- "Israel's" investment in Hasbara -
The funding allocated to Hasbara initiatives has reached extreme levels, with "Israel" committing to shaping its global narrative and countering criticism of its actions.
Towards the end of 2024, Middle East Eye (MEE) reported the "Israeli" government significantly increased its financial support for these efforts, with reports indicating an allocation of an additional USD 150 million to the Foreign Ministry for Hasbara activities in the 2025 budget, which is a staggering 20-fold increase compared to previous years.
The funds are primarily directed toward campaigns targeting American college campuses, social media platforms, and international media outlets, all aimed at promoting a favorable image of "Israel" and justifying its controversial policies and military operations.
The effort is set to be carried out in coordination with Jewish organizations in the US and "Israel's" Diaspora Affairs Ministry.
Hasbara's influence extends deeply into Western media, where the IOF's actions are often framed as acts of self-defense rather than aggression. News reports commonly describe confrontations in the occupied territories as "clashes" between "both sides," obscuring the asymmetry of power between the IOF and Palestinian resistance groups. This strategic framing allows "Israel" to maintain its global support while continuing military operations with limited accountability.
As "Israel's" offensive on Gaza continues, Hasbara remains a cornerstone of its public relations strategy. By shaping how conflicts are perceived, "Israel" aims to sustain international backing and mitigate criticism of its actions.

Brussels Airport ground staff unions refuse to service 'Israel'-bound flights

Unions representing workers at Alyzia, a ground services company operating at Brussels Airport, have called on management to stop providing services to 'Israeli' airline El Al and any other carriers flying to or from 'Israel'. In a letter sent to company leadership, union representatives demanded that employees be given the choice to opt out of handling baggage or cargo for these flights. The move follows Brussels Airlines' decision to resume flights to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, August 13, a plan that unions say should only proceed with fully voluntary participation from staff. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ACV Puls (@acvpuls) The unions' stance comes amid a growing movement across Europe's aviation sector opposing 'Israel's' military campaign in Gaza. In France, airport unions have pushed for a halt to arms shipments to 'Israel' via Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Brussels Airlines has confirmed that flights to Tel Aviv will operate with 'volunteer crews,' acknowledging heightened sensitivities among employees and the broader public. Brussels, home to a significant North African community, has seen increased tensions since the escalation of violence in Gaza. In an official joint statement, the Alyzia unions, including Pulse, CNE, and ACV-CSC Transcom, said: 'Since October 2023, genocide has been underway in Gaza and the West Bank against the Palestinian population. Serious violations of humanitarian law and international law continue. Despite this, some airlines have decided to resume flights to Tel Aviv (TLV). Our affiliates refuse to participate in these operations. We will not serve these flights.' The unions argued that allowing 'Israeli' officials or soldiers accused of war crimes to travel freely through Brussels is unacceptable, framing their refusal as a matter of 'moral principles and respect for human rights' rather than religion or ethnicity. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ACV Puls (@acvpuls) They pledged opposition to 'all forms of racism, anti-Semitism, and terrorism,' but insisted on taking a stand for 'international law and human dignity.' The statement concluded, 'When politicians restrict themselves to crocodile tears over the fate of Gaza's residents, workers take action. Together we stand. No treatment of flights to Tel Aviv as long as the genocide in Gaza continues.'

Chain of 'Israeli' commanders behind Anas Al-Sharif's killing revealed

The Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) and the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) have filed a joint case to the International Criminal Court (ICC) accusing top 'Israeli' military and political leaders of ordering the assassination of journalist Anas Al-Sharif and at least five other Palestinian reporters in Gaza. They published the announcement in a report they titled 'The Hunt for Anas Al-Sharif's Killers.' The filing takes the form of an Article 15 Communication, a legal mechanism under the Rome Statute that allows individuals, organizations, or states to submit information about alleged crimes to the International Criminal Court. Unlike a general complaint, an Article 15 Communication is designed to trigger the ICC Prosecutor's preliminary examination, potentially leading to a full investigation and prosecutions. In this case, the submission lays out, step by step, the chain of command and operational decisions that investigators say led to Al-Sharif's killing outside Al-Shifa Hospital, where he was working from a clearly marked press tent. PCHR's evidence ties his death to a broader, documented pattern: journalists in Gaza are first branded as 'terrorists' by 'Israeli' officials, then eliminated in targeted strikes. This pattern is reflected in the cases of Hussam Shabat, Ismail Al-Ghoul, Ahmed Al-Louh, Hamza Wael Al-Dahdouh, and Samer Abu Daqa, each assassinated after such public vilification. Tracing the chain of command HRF's investigation followed the strike from 'the moment a drone camera locked onto Al-Sharif's position to the instant the missile hit.' Through operational pattern analysis, signals intelligence, and military expertise, the chain of responsibility identified includes: Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir – IDF Chief of the General Staff Maj.-Gen. Tomer Bar – Commander of the Israeli Air Force Maj.-Gen. Yaniv Asor – Southern Command Commander Brig.-Gen. Yossi Sariel – Former Commander of Unit 8200 'General A.' – Current Commander of Unit 8200 Palmachim Airbase Commander (undisclosed) 'Black Snake' Squadron Commander (undisclosed) Col. Avichay Adraee – IOF Arabic-language spokesperson, accused of orchestrating a smear campaign against Al-Sharif At the political level, the report points to 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of promoting a strategy to eliminate journalists as part of the Gaza assault. 'The smear before the strike' HRF also revealed what it calls 'the smear before the strike', a campaign to delegitimize Al-Sharif long before his killing. For nearly two years, Adraee used social media to brand him a Hamas operative, mock his emotional reporting, and frame his journalism as propaganda. PCHR says similar campaigns preceded the killings of Hamza Al-Dahdouh, Ismail Al-Ghoul, and Hussam Shabat. Legal accusations and demands The ICC filing accuses those named of: The submission demands that the ICC prosecutor: Issue arrest warrants for the named officials. Expand Netanyahu's warrant to include crimes against journalists. Add all 220+ journalist killings in Gaza to the ICC's Palestine investigation. 'This is not symbolic litigation,' said HRF Chairman Dyab Abou Jahjah. 'The assassination of Anas Al-Sharif was so blunt, so arrogant, and so drenched in contempt for human life, truth, the legal order, and humanity itself, that it cannot and will not be allowed to pass into silence.'

Global Support Expands for Two-State Solution - Jordan News

Amman – Global support for the two-state solution has grown as several countries have expressed their intention to recognize an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, where Palestinians can live in peace. اضافة اعلان Security and strategic expert Dr. Bashir Al-Dajeh told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the widening circle of solidarity with the Palestinian cause and the increasing recognition of a Palestinian state is no longer a mere political development but a strategic shift with deep legal, diplomatic, and security dimensions. He added that in recent years, several countries in Europe, Latin America, and Asia have taken practical steps to officially recognize the Palestinian state or support its full UN membership. This establishes a new political reality that strengthens the legitimacy of Palestinian demands and challenges Israel's narrative under international law. 'When parliaments and governments recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, this implicitly rejects the occupation and its policies, placing Israel under increasing diplomatic isolation,' he said. Al-Dajeh also highlighted Jordan's stable and influential role, stemming from the Hashemite custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, positioning Jordan as a key partner in determining the city's future. He noted Jordan's opposition to unilateral Israeli decisions regarding land annexation, settlement expansion, and altering the historical and legal status of Jerusalem. Jordan has raised the issue of Israeli violations to the UN Security Council and General Assembly and launched regional diplomatic efforts to consolidate Arab positions against Israeli policies, leveraging the growing international recognition of a Palestinian state to increase pressure on the occupation. Former Jordanian diplomat Dr. Talal Sharafat emphasized that Jordan considers the Palestinian cause its central issue and that peace in the region and the world cannot be achieved without its resolution. He noted that Jordan's foreign policy support, led by His Majesty the King, is a strategic matter based on its fraternal duty to the Palestinians and achieving the two-state solution. Jordan's credibility internationally stems from its moderation and role as custodian of Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites. Political science professor at the University of Jordan, Dr. Mohammad Al-Masaleh, said that Jordan, through active diplomacy led by the King, focuses on a political solution to establish an independent state living peacefully alongside Israel, noting that the two-state solution is the most feasible option. He added that His Majesty the King has visited many world capitals to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and deliver aid, underscoring Jordan's strong diplomatic and media stance in defending the Palestinian cause and emphasizing the two-state solution. 'The issue was nearly forgotten due to global preoccupation with other crises, leaving the Palestinian cause aside, especially in the absence of action on the ground,' he concluded. – (Petra)
