A New Yorker who flew to Puerto Rico for a Bad Bunny concert was fatally shot, police say

CNN3 days ago
San Juan, Puerto Rico (AP) — A tourist from the U.S. mainland who was visiting Puerto Rico for Bad Bunny's residency was fatally shot early Sunday at La Perla, a popular seaside shantytown, police said.
The victim was identified as Kevin Mares, a 25-year-old who lived in New York, according to a police statement.
The shooting happened in the predawn hours at a nightspot called 'Refuge for Mistreated Men' in La Perla, a coastal community that has struggled to shed its dark reputation.
Homicide detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz said in a phone interview that the shooting took place when several people near Mares began arguing and one pulled out a gun and shot at least three people, including Mares. A brother and a sister in their mid-40s who live in La Perla were injured and remain hospitalized.
Ruiz said Mares was an innocent bystander. He was with three other friends who told police they were in Puerto Rico for one of Bad Bunny's 30 concerts, which have attracted tens of thousands of visitors to the U.S. territory.
Mares was shot on the left side of his abdomen and was taken to Puerto Rico's largest public hospital, where he died, authorities said.
Ruiz said police don't yet know what the people were arguing about and don't have a description of the shooter. 'We have very little information,' he said.
Ruiz added that Mares' three friends also were from New York. He didn't have their hometowns.
San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero told reporters Sunday that he would share footage from security cameras in the area, adding that Mares' partner had opted not to visit la Perla with him.
Police said the incident occurred at 4:13 a.m., even though a municipal code approved in 2023 states that authorized businesses in San Juan can only serve or sell alcohol from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and up to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday if Monday is a holiday.
La Perla is located on the outskirts of a historic district popular with tourists known as Old San Juan. A couple hundred people live in the shantytown, which once served as Puerto Rico's biggest distribution point for heroin and was known for its violence.
Police used to avoid the community, which used to have a sign proclaiming, 'Not open to visitors. Do not enter.'
But violence eased when hundreds of federal agents raided the slum in 2011 and arrested dozens of people, including a well-known community leader who was later convicted.
The neighborhood became even safer and more welcoming after Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featured it in their hit, 'Despacito.'
But isolated violence persists.
In February 2023, three tourists were stabbed after police said a person told them to stop filming inside the community.
Then in April 2024, a 24-year-old tourist from Delaware was killed and his body set on fire after police said he and a friend were attacked following a drug purchase. Police said the victims were trying to take pictures of La Perla after being warned not to do so.
The island of 3.2 million people has reported 277 killings so far this year, compared with 325 killings in the same period last year.

‘Coward' jailed for robbing elderly deaf woman at Westminster Tube station in central London

A 'cowardly' robber has been jailed for targeting an elderly deaf woman on the escalators of Westminster Tube station in central London. Liam McGuicken, 53, stalked the victim in her 80s from behind as she travelled down towards the platform. Her companion, also deaf, was unaware of what had been occurring behind them. McGuicken put his hands against the woman's chest, pinning her against the handrail. She couldn't hear what he was saying, but turned her face away in fear. McGuicken reached into a coat pocket and stole her wallet before getting off of the escalator at the bottom. As he got an escalator back up to the London Underground station's exit, CCTV footage shows him rifling through the purse. McGuicken, of no fixed address, was arrested a month later at Sutton railway station after he was stopped by officers in connection with fare evasion. At Inner London Crown Court on Friday, he was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment, having pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing. British Transport Police Detective Inspector Alan Judd said: 'McGuicken sickeningly targeted an elderly deaf woman as she was making her way through the station, cowardly choosing to target a vulnerable woman for his own gain. 'I'm very pleased with the result, and I sincerely hope McGuicken takes this opportunity to change. 'His conviction sends a strong message that robbery will not be tolerated on the railway network.' Detroit man charged with breaking into Shelby Township apartment

A Detroit man has been facing a pair of felony charges in connection with breaking into a Shelby Township apartment in July. In the early morning hours of July 28, Shelby Township police responded to a report of a break-in in the area of West Utica and Ryan roads after a woman reported receiving videos on her phone of a man inside her apartment. By the time officers arrived at the residence, the suspect, identified as Gjervon Rodney Williams of Detroit, had left. On Aug. 8, police received a FLOCK hit on Williams' car and arrested him during a traffic stop in Shelby Township. While searching his vehicle, police say they found a loaded gun that was reported stolen out of Detroit, as well as several credit cards that were not in Williams' name. Williams was lodged at the Macomb County Jail. He was arraigned on Aug. 8 on charges of felony home invasion and receiving and concealing a firearm. "This arrest shows exactly why investigative tools like FLOCK are so valuable. By combining technology with proactive police work, our great officers were able to quickly locate Williams, get him into custody and prevent any further criminal activity. Shelby Township is now safer with another stolen gun off the streets and this criminal behind bars," said Shelby Township Chief of Police Robert J. Shelide in a statement.

Man accused of ramming car into Liverpool soccer parade faces a further 24 charges

LONDON (AP) — The man accused of ramming his car into a parade of Liverpool soccer fans in May as the team was celebrating its Premier League triumph is to face a further 24 charges, including two relating to victims who were babies. Paul Doyle, 53, was in tears as he appeared over videolink from prison for the Liverpool Crown Court hearing on Thursday. During the hearing, he was informed of the new charges, 23 of which were for assault. Six of the new charges relate to children, including two babies aged 6 and 7 months at the time. He was originally charged with seven offenses after the incident in the city center on May 26. Doyle is expected to enter pleas on Sept. 4. Fans had been celebrating Liverpool's record-tying 20th title when Doyle allegedly drove down a street full of fans and joy quickly turned to tragedy. Police said they believed Doyle got through a roadblock by following an ambulance that was trying to reach a possible heart attack victim. In a video the car could be seen hitting and sending a person wrapped in a red Liverpool flag into the air before swerving into a sea of people packed on the side of the road. At least four people, including a child, had to be freed from beneath the vehicle when it came to a halt. The victims ranged in age from 9 to 78, police said. The suspect was believed to have acted alone and terrorism was not suspected, Merseyside Police said. They have not disclosed an alleged motive for the act.
