Ramadan skies light up: Crescent moon, eclipse, and planetary views

Observing the sky in March presents a trade-off: it coincides with the beginning of Ramadan this year, and as the month progresses, sunset gradually becomes later and the weather becomes less cold. However, the winter constellations can still be seen in the evening sky, although they have begun to shift westward.
According to the Jeddah Astronomical Society on their Facebook account, Venus appears in the western horizon immediately after sunset and is easy to spot—it's so bright you might mistake it for an airplane at first. Venus's intense brightness is due to its proximity to Earth, but more importantly, its dense and cloudy atmosphere strongly reflects sunlight.
However, because of this brightness, Venus is not ideal for telescope observation, although it can be seen as a small crescent this month. This is because its orbit around the sun is inside Earth's orbit, meaning it goes through phases similar to the moon.
Ramadan Crescent
One of the most beautiful celestial events is the appearance of the Ramadan crescent near Venus on March 1st. The new crescent will appear below and to the left of bright Venus in the western horizon immediately after sunset. Below Venus and the moon, you can look for Mercury, which will appear as a bright speck below the lunar crescent.
Mercury Observation
During the first half of March, Mercury and Venus will remain close to each other after sunset, but as the month progresses, they will begin to approach the western horizon more and more. By late March, Venus and Mercury will move to the eastern horizon in the early morning sky, but they will disappear in the sun's glare. The best night to observe Mercury is the evening of March 8th.
Total Lunar Eclipse in Ramadan
The first major astronomical event in March, in the middle of Ramadan, is a total lunar eclipse visible in most of the western hemisphere on the night of March 13-14, when the moon passes through Earth's shadow. This is the first of two eclipses that will occur this year and is not visible in Saudi Arabia but will be seen in its partial form in the Maghreb countries.
The society noted that the Gemini constellation and the rest of the magnificent winter constellations in the northern hemisphere still adorn the southern horizon at the beginning of the night. This will be the last month you can enjoy this stellar group, as the Earth's movement in its orbit around the sun will gradually cause the night side of Earth to move away from this part of space.
This year, the winter constellations are accompanied by Jupiter and Mars. Jupiter is the brighter of the two and is also the brightest celestial body among the winter constellations.
Jupiter is located above the Gemini stars in the northern hemisphere. Using a small telescope, you can see four of Jupiter's largest moons, which change positions on either side of the planet from night to night as they orbit the giant of our solar system.
Mars is located above and to the left of the Gemini stars, between the brightest stars of the Gemini constellation. Through a medium-sized telescope, you can see its surface features, including its north pole, if the sky is dark and clear enough. On March 8th, the first quarter moon will be close to Mars, less than two degrees away.
The three bright stars that form the Orion's Belt are clearly visible, and no other group of stars has this brightness and perfect straight line. Below the belt are three faint stars that form the Orion's Sword. The middle star is the Orion Nebula, which appears as a hazy star to the naked eye and is a spectacular sight through small telescopes, where you can see a giant cloud of hydrogen gas where stars are forming.
The society said that the Taurus constellation is considered one of the winter constellations in the northern hemisphere. Although it may be one of the smaller winter constellations, it contains the Pleiades star cluster, which resembles the stars of the Little Dipper.
The Pleiades cluster is located more than 400 light-years from Earth and is more than 40 light-years in diameter. Using a small telescope or binoculars, you can see dozens of stars that were born together in a giant hydrogen cloud more than 100 million years ago.

Here's What Happened During Katy Perry's Space Launch

Yara Sameh Katy Perry and 'CBS Mornings' anchor Gayle King were among the six passengers Monday on an all-female voyage into to the edge of space via Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin space travel business. Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket soared into space after blastoff from the company's West Texas launch facility at 9:30 a.m. ET on Monday. The eight-minute flight traveled more than 62 miles into the atmosphere, past the Kármán line, which per Blue Origin is the 'internationally recognized boundary of space.' Blue Origin promises passengers in its burgeoning space tourism business that the trip offers the chance to experience 'several minutes of weightlessness and witnessing life-changing views of Earth.' The module containing the astronauts, suspended from three parachutes, landed several minutes after the rocket. The New Shepard rocket operates autonomously without a pilot. Joining the pop superstar and King are Bezos' fiance, journalist and philanthropist Lauren Sánchez, engineer and NASA veteran Aisha Bowe, activist and scientist Amanda Nguyen; and movie producer Kerianne Flynn. The launch is designed to bring attention to women in aeronautics. 'I gotta sing in space,' Perry posted on Instagram on Sunday. But when asked about that comment during a pre-recorded CBS interview with all of the new astronauts, she commented, 'It won't be about me, it will be about this beautiful Earth. I think from up there, we will think 'Oh my God, we have to protect our mother.'' Perry did indeed sing during the flight. Although what she was singing was unclear during the broadcast, but King later said in an interview that it was 'What a Wonderful World.' 'I've covered that song in the past. Obviously my higher self is steering the ship. I had no clue I'd one day decide to sing a little bit of that in space,' Perry said of her decision to sing the Louis Armstrong classic. 'It's not about me. It's not about singing my songs. It's about a collective energy and making space for future women. It's about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.' King told CBS News before the launch, 'I've made no secret of the fact that I'm very nervous but also very excited.' The TV coverage cut included footage of people on the ground cheering as the rocket took off and gained altitude. After a couple of minutes, it broke the sound barrier and entered the atmosphere. The astronauts were heard marveling at the sight of the moon. Bezos, founder and chairman of Amazon, was the first to greet the astronauts after landing; he popped open the hatch with a wrench and greeted Sanchez. Perry was next out of the capsule; she knelt and kissed the sandy ground. King emerged and did the same. Launched Blue Origin in 2000. The venture made its first flight in July 2021 with passengers that included Bezos and Wally Funk, a pioneering female astronaut who trained as part of NASA's Mercury program in the 1960s. The gravity of the event was reflected by a comment from one announcer, who said after the landing, 'It's truly remarkable that all these people on the ground have been looking up at the sky for the past several minutes — and no one's been looking at their phone.' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Eid Al-Fitr starts on Monday in Egypt - Society

Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta, the country's authority on Islamic rulings, has announced that Eid Al-Fitr will begin on Monday, 31 March. 'Based on the confirmed results of this legitimate visual sighting, it has been determined that the crescent moon of Shawwal was not sighted across the country through our committees," Grand Mufti Sheikh Nazir Muhammad Ayyad said. Accordingly, Dar Al-Ifta announced that Sunday, 30 March, will be the completion of the month of Ramadan 1446 AH, and Monday, 31 March, will be the first day of Shawwal 1446 AH. Eid Al-Fitr, which falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic Hijri calendar, is determined by lunar calculations. Islamic months vary between 29 and 30 days, depending on crescent sightings. Traditionally, the crescent moon must be visible to the naked eye after sunset on the 29th day of Ramadan for Eid to be declared the following day. Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Sudan, and the UAE, confirmed that Sunday will mark the start of Eid. While some others inlcuding Syria, Oman, Iraq, Algeria, Libya and Jordan said that Eid will begin on Monday. Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) stated last week that, based on astronomical calculations, Eid would fall on Sunday in Egypt and other Arab countries. In a later statement where Dar Al-Iftaa sought to clarify the confusion, the religious institution emphasized that there is no contradiction between Islamic teachings and modern science, saying the two complement each other to ensure accurate religious observances. Public and private sector holidays Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced last week that public-sector employees will have a four-day paid holiday, from Saturday, 29 March, to Wednesday, 2 April. Labour Minister Mohamed Gobran confirmed that the private sector will receive the same holiday entitlement. Meanwhile, Education Minister Mohamed Abdel-Latif has declared a week-long school holiday from Saturday, 29 March, to Friday, 4 April, to mark the occasion. Egyptians traditionally perform Eid prayers in open spaces to accommodate large numbers of worshippers. This year, prayers will begin at 6:13 AM. Eid Mubarak to all! Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta explains controversy over Eid Al-Fitr date - Society

Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta, the country's authority on Islamic rulings, has sought to clarify confusion over its announcement that Eid Al-Fitr will begin on Monday, 31 March following differing calculations from the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG), which had stated the holiday would fall on Sunday. According to Islamic tradition, the beginning of lunar months, including Shawwal, which marks Eid Al-Fitr, is determined by the sighting of the new crescent moon with the naked eye, Dar Al-Ifta said in a statement. Dar Al-Ifta said it follows a combined approach that incorporates both religious texts and modern astronomical calculations. 'Astronomical calculations do not dictate the start of a lunar month; rather, they confirm whether moon sighting is possible or not, making them a standard to calibrate the legitimate sighting,' it said. The institution cited the instructions of Prophet Muhammad 'PBUH' on determining the start and end of Ramadan: 'Fast when you see it (the moon) and break your fast when you see it. If it is obscured, complete thirty days of the month" (Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim). Based on this method, Dar Al-Ifta determined that the crescent moon was not visible on Saturday, 29 March 2025. As a result, Ramadan will be completed as a 30-day month, and Eid al-Fitr will begin on Monday, 31 March. The institution emphasized that there is no contradiction between Islamic teachings and modern science, saying the two complement each other to ensure accurate religious observances. Last week, Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) stated that, based on astronomical calculations, Eid would fall on Sunday in Egypt and other Arab countries. Several countries, including Syria, Oman, Iraq, Algeria, and Jordan, have confirmed that Eid will begin on Monday, while others, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Sudan, and the UAE, have declared that Eid will start on Sunday.
