Eid Al-Fitr starts on Monday in Egypt - Society
Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta, the country's authority on Islamic rulings, has announced that Eid Al-Fitr will begin on Monday, 31 March.
'Based on the confirmed results of this legitimate visual sighting, it has been determined that the crescent moon of Shawwal was not sighted across the country through our committees," Grand Mufti Sheikh Nazir Muhammad Ayyad said.
Accordingly, Dar Al-Ifta announced that Sunday, 30 March, will be the completion of the month of Ramadan 1446 AH, and Monday, 31 March, will be the first day of Shawwal 1446 AH.
Eid Al-Fitr, which falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic Hijri calendar, is determined by lunar calculations. Islamic months vary between 29 and 30 days, depending on crescent sightings. Traditionally, the crescent moon must be visible to the naked eye after sunset on the 29th day of Ramadan for Eid to be declared the following day.
Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Sudan, and the UAE, confirmed that Sunday will mark the start of Eid.
While some others inlcuding Syria, Oman, Iraq, Algeria, Libya and Jordan said that Eid will begin on Monday.
Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) stated last week that, based on astronomical calculations, Eid would fall on Sunday in Egypt and other Arab countries.
In a later statement where Dar Al-Iftaa sought to clarify the confusion, the religious institution emphasized that there is no contradiction between Islamic teachings and modern science, saying the two complement each other to ensure accurate religious observances.
Public and private sector holidays
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced last week that public-sector employees will have a four-day paid holiday, from Saturday, 29 March, to Wednesday, 2 April. Labour Minister Mohamed Gobran confirmed that the private sector will receive the same holiday entitlement.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Mohamed Abdel-Latif has declared a week-long school holiday from Saturday, 29 March, to Friday, 4 April, to mark the occasion.
Egyptians traditionally perform Eid prayers in open spaces to accommodate large numbers of worshippers. This year, prayers will begin at 6:13 AM.

Three Winning Technological Projects at ICESCO Youth Training Program
Mohamed Mandour The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) concluded its program on training youth on setting up and developing small projects in the fields of technology and innovation in the Republic of Sierra Leone. The close of the training program, implemented by ICESCO's Science and Environment Sector, in partnership with the Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone, was marked by the announcement of three winning projects, out of the 49 participating teams at the national level. During the two-day event, contestants presented their projects before a jury. During his remarks at the opening session, Dr. Muhammad Sharif, Advisor at the Sector of Science and Environment, stressed the importance of integrating the youth of the Islamic world in the fields of entrepreneurship, modern technology and innovation to contribute to achieving sustainable development in their communities. Winning first place, the Mamawa Muyengay Agric Business team presented their project to integrate and improve the living conditions of youth, women and the elderly in rural areas through building their capacities in the fields of cassava farming. OPEN// FM participates in Oslo Forum sessions
CAIRO, June 11 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty Wednesday participated at the start of his visit to Norway in the opening session of the Oslo Forum. The 2025 edition of the forum focuses on mediation efforts in international conflicts. He also took part in a panel discussion titled "A different future for the Middle East," alongside several foreign ministers. The session addressed ways to end the Israeli war on Gaza and to achieve truce and stability in the region. The foreign minister highlighted the international consensus on the need to implement the two-state solution, reaffirming Egypt's steadfast commitment to ending the war and the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, ensuring a permanent ceasefire and facilitating unhindered humanitarian aid access. Abdelatty condemned the widespread destruction in Gaza, describing it as a deliberate effort to restrict the choices of its residents and their displacement and expand Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories. He stressed that Israel's obstruction of humanitarian aid to Gaza constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law. The minister also discussed the situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. He outlined Egypt's efforts to stop the bloodshed in Gaza, noting Cairo's serious initiatives to achieve a ceasefire and ensure the rapid and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid. Abdelatty also referred to the extraordinary Arab summit held in Cairo on March 4, 2025, which adopted a plan for the reconstruction of Gaza without displacing its residents. This plan received broad support at the Arab, Islamic, and international levels, according to him. He announced Egypt's intention to host an international conference for early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza once the hostilities cease. He stressed the importance of recognizing the State of Palestine as a means to promote peace, justice, and stability in the Middle East, calling on all members of the international community to recognize Palestine.
