Eid Al-Fitr starts on Monday in Egypt - Society

Egypt's Dar Al-Ifta, the country's authority on Islamic rulings, has announced that Eid Al-Fitr will begin on Monday, 31 March. 'Based on the confirmed results of this legitimate visual sighting, it has been determined that the crescent moon of Shawwal was not sighted across the country through our committees," Grand Mufti Sheikh Nazir Muhammad Ayyad said. Accordingly, Dar Al-Ifta announced that Sunday, 30 March, will be the completion of the month of Ramadan 1446 AH, and Monday, 31 March, will be the first day of Shawwal 1446 AH. Eid Al-Fitr, which falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic Hijri calendar, is determined by lunar calculations. Islamic months vary between 29 and 30 days, depending on crescent sightings. Traditionally, the crescent moon must be visible to the naked eye after sunset on the 29th day of Ramadan for Eid to be declared the following day. Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Sudan, and the UAE, confirmed that Sunday will mark the start of Eid. While some others inlcuding Syria, Oman, Iraq, Algeria, Libya and Jordan said that Eid will begin on Monday. Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) stated last week that, based on astronomical calculations, Eid would fall on Sunday in Egypt and other Arab countries. In a later statement where Dar Al-Iftaa sought to clarify the confusion, the religious institution emphasized that there is no contradiction between Islamic teachings and modern science, saying the two complement each other to ensure accurate religious observances. Public and private sector holidays Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced last week that public-sector employees will have a four-day paid holiday, from Saturday, 29 March, to Wednesday, 2 April. Labour Minister Mohamed Gobran confirmed that the private sector will receive the same holiday entitlement. Meanwhile, Education Minister Mohamed Abdel-Latif has declared a week-long school holiday from Saturday, 29 March, to Friday, 4 April, to mark the occasion. Egyptians traditionally perform Eid prayers in open spaces to accommodate large numbers of worshippers. This year, prayers will begin at 6:13 AM. Eid Mubarak to all! Egypt's Grand Mufti condemns Israel's decision to block entry of aid to Gaza

Grand Mufti of the Republic and Head of the General Secretariat of Fatwa Authorities and Institutions in the World, Dr. Nazir Muhammad Ayyad CAIRO - 3 March 2025: Grand Mufti of the Republic and Head of the General Secretariat of Fatwa Authorities and Institutions in the World, Dr. Nazir Muhammad Ayyad, condemned in the strongest terms the decision issued by the occupying Israeli entity to block the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip and close the crossings used for relief work. Egypt's Grand Mufti also stressed that the Israeli decision represents a "flagrant violation of all international laws and norms," and exacerbates the humanitarian suffering faced by civilians in the Strip. The Grand Mufti of the Republic stresses that depriving innocent people of food, medicine and humanitarian aid is a humanitarian crime that contradicts the basic principles of divine laws and international laws, which require providing aid to civilians, especially in times of crises and conflicts. He added that continuing to impose restrictions on the entry of aid leads to a major humanitarian disaster, and doubles the suffering of women, children and the elderly who live in tragic conditions inside the Strip, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. The Mufti called on the international community and human rights and humanitarian institutions to take urgent and immediate action to pressure the Israeli authorities to cancel this inhumane decision, and to work to ensure the rapid and safe flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He further stressed that silence towards these violations is complicity against human values, and that it is the duty of countries and international organizations to play their moral and humanitarian role to protect civilians and ensure that aid reaches them without obstacles. The Mufti of the Republic called on all active forces on the international scene to make the necessary efforts to stop the escalation in the Palestinian territories, and to work to end the suffering of the Palestinian people, noting that all heavenly laws came to establish the values of justice, mercy and coexistence, and not to justify injustice, starvation and siege, stressing that silence towards these crimes only increases their spread, only increases the suffering of the victims, and only increases the betrayal of humanity.
