Vibhu Tyagi tops Deaflympics golf selection trials
The selection trials were conducted by the All India Sports Council of the Deaf (AISCD) under the guidance of the Indian Golf Union. The event brought together six determined athletes, including one female participant, showcasing the growing inclusivity in Indian sports for the hearing-impaired community.
Harsh Singh from Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh's Jastar Singh Billing took the second and third places, respectively. The trials were a crucial step in identifying India's golfing contingent for the Deaflympics 2025, set to take place in Tokyo later this year.
The trials began with a warm welcome from IGU Treasurer Sanjeev Rattan, who, along with AISCD Chairman Mohinder Singh, addressed and encouraged the participants. Other important dignitaries present were project manager Somesh Sharma and technical director (badminton) Smt Sonu Anand Sharma.
'The selection trials were conducted in a fair and transparent manner. Despite the small field, the competition was fierce, and the players delivered consistent performances across both rounds. I would like to thank the Indian Golf Union for its guidance. I would also like to express my best wishes for the winners as well as other participants. As our Prime Minister Narendra Modi says, 'Jo khele, who khile', all these special athletes are privileged to have the opportunity to represent the country at the top level,' AISCD Chairman Mohinder Singh said.
Unfortunately, one of the participants, Ishant S. Shikare, was disqualified after Round 1 due to a breach of Rule 3.3b of the 2023 Rules of Golf. The tournament committee, after a comprehensive review, decided that it was in the interest of maintaining fairness and integrity in the selection process.

Shehzad went on to even state that Kohli's comparison shouldn't be made with two-time World Cup-winning former captain MS Dhoni. "Virat Kohli's comparison cannot be made with anyone in the world. He is a legend of this generation, a role model. "You cannot compare him even with MS Dhoni. Dhoni may have been a great captain, but as a batter, cricketer, and athlete, Kohli stands alone. No one should be compared with anyone because it's unfair and it adds extra pressure, which we are now seeing on Babar Azam,' said Shehzad. In 2025, Babar played just 14 international matches. In three Tests, the right-hander scored 184 runs while he managed 334 in 11 ODIs. He is yet to play a T20I in this year. Interestingly, Babar's teammate Salman Ali Agha mustered most runs (857) for Pakistan in 2025. Following the ODI series against West Indies, Pakistan will next be seen in the T20I Tri-nation series in United Arab Emirates, also involving Afghanistan. The tri-series will also act as a preparation for all the three teams ahead of Asia Cup 2025 which starts on September 9. Although the squads for both the tri-series and the Asia Cup 2025 are yet to be announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board, Babar's is likely to be included.

Mamata condoles demise of hockey legend Vece Paes
Agency: PTI Kolkata, Aug 13 (PTI) Condoling the demise of Dr Vece Paes, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said his contributions to hockey and sports medicine will always be remembered. Paes, a member of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games bronze-winning Indian men's hockey team and father of legendary tennis player Leander Paes, died in Kolkata owing to age-related ailments. He was 80. 'His dedication to hockey and contributions to sports medicine will always be remembered.
