Arensman gives Ineos something to cheer about as doping cloud hangs
Slovenian Tadej Pogacar retained the overall leader's yellow jersey as he took second place by beating chief rival Jonas Vingegaard in a two-man sprint finish, one minute 12 seconds behind Arensman, the first rider from the British outfit to win on the Tour in two years.
Ineos Grenadiers have been facing questions about one of their team carers, who is at the centre of allegations involving alleged message exchanges in 2012 with a doctor connected to the notorious Operation Aderlass doping scandal, which rocked the sporting world in 2019.
Bradley Wiggins won the Tour in 2012 with the team, which was then known as Team Sky before Chris Froome went on to win another four for the squad.
Although no formal charges have been brought, the development has cast a shadow over the team's Tour campaign, with the carer nowhere to be seen in recent days.
"Ineos Grenadiers Cycling Team is aware of recent media allegations relating to the 2012 season and a member of its staff. These allegations have not to date been presented to the team by any appropriate authority," the team said in a statement.
The team added that it had formally requested information from the International Testing Agency (ITA) and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy regarding doping violations.
The ITA told Reuters it would not further comment on the matter.
Operation Aderlass, which began with a raid during the 2019 Nordic World Ski Championships in Austria, implicated athletes and medical personnel across several sports, including cycling.
The doctor at the centre of the case, Mark Schmidt, was later convicted and sentenced to prison for administering illegal blood transfusions.
On the Tour, defending champion Pogacar extended his lead over Dane Vingegaard in the general classification by six seconds to 4:13 at the end of the Pyrenean stage, where Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who had started the day in third place overall, abandoned .
The day belonged to Arensman, however, as the Dutchman went solo from the day's breakaway in the penultimate climb to the Col de Peyresourde (7.1 km at 7.8%) before his team car hit and knocked down a spectator amid the usual roadside chaos on the Tour.
Arensman never looked back and held firm on his way up to Superbagneres (12.4 km at 7.3%) as Vingegaard attacked several times in an attempt to drop Pogacar.
But the world champion did not flinch and easily beat his rival in the final metres to further cement his dominance.
"I can't really believe it. I got sick after the Giro, but I had a good preparation going into my first Tour. I had to be patient and wait for the mountains to try my luck. This is unbelievable, the way I did it today," Arensman said.
"I had amazing legs and I'm in the shape of my life. I thought with Tadej and Jonas in the favourites group three minutes behind, I was not sure I had enough, but I held them off."
The peloton, controlled by Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates-XRG, reduced the gap with the breakaway from four to just over two minutes, giving the sense that the Slovenian would go for the win.
But Arensman had other ideas and he went on his own in the Col de Peyresourde and never looked back.

Bournemouth could face fight over transfer target with Premier League rivals - as Cherries prepare to lose star defender to Paris Saint-Germain
Bournemouth are in advanced talks with Lille over a deal for Bafode Diakite. The 24-year-old defender has been on Bournemouth's radar for the past two years and is back in focus as they look to strengthen at centre back. Diakite was the subject of interest from Sunderland earlier this summer and is valued around £30million. He rose through the youth ranks of Toulouse before making his debut for the club at the age of 17. Over four seasons with Toulouse's first team, Diakite made 82 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals. He also spent time with Toulouse B, adding three goals in 10 appearances. In August 2022, Diakite moved to Lille, signing a four-year contract. Since then, he has made 110 appearances. Diakite has represented France at multiple youth levels - Under 16, U18, U19, and U21 - and was included in their squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Elsewhere, Chelsea defender Axel Disasi and Genoa's Koni de Winter are also among the names being considered by Bournemouth as they prepare to sell Illya Zabarnyi to Paris Saint-Germain. Zabarnyi joined Bournemouth from Dynamo Kyiv in January 2023 and has made 86 appearances since.

Bournemouth pushing for Lille's Bafodé Diakité to replace outgoing Illia Zabarnyi
Bournemouth are pushing to sign the Lille centre-back Bafodé Diakité as a replacement for Illia Zabarnyi, who is poised to join Paris Saint-Germain. Zabarnyi is expected to join PSG in a deal worth almost €70m (£61m), with talks over add-ons ongoing. Zabarnyi's anticipated departure would mean Bournemouth will have generated more than £150m this summer, with fellow defenders Milos Kerkez and Dean Huijsen joining Liverpool and Real Madrid respectively. Premier League clubs are understood to be monitoring PSG's progress with a deal for Zabarnyi, given the protracted talks in recent weeks, but the expectation is the 22-year-old Ukraine defender will depart for the French club. The 24-year-old Diakite has been the subject of interest from Premier League rivals, including Sunderland. The Cherries looked to Ligue 1 for Kerkez's replacement, Adrien Truffert, and now hope to seal the signing of Diakité, who was a regular starter for Lille last season. Bournemouth also signed Eli Junior Kroupi from the French club Lorient earlier this year. Another Lille player, goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, is primed to join PSG. There are suggestions Chevalier will become Luis Enrique's new No 1, casting doubt over the immediate future of the Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was part of the Champions League-winning side last season. Andoni Iraola wants two new defenders this summer after Huijsen's exit. Bournemouth tracked Nathan Zézé but the 20-year-old joined Saudi Pro League Neom from Nantes at the end of last month. The Cherries are thought to hold an interest in the 19-year-old Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong. Elsewhere, West Ham are poised to sign Mads Hermansen after striking an £18m deal to sign the goalkeeper from relegated Leicester. The Championship club were resigned to losing the Denmark goalkeeper, who will reunite with Casper Ankergren, West Ham's lead goalkeeper coach, whom he worked with at Brondby. Meanwhile Wilfred Ndidi, one of Leicester's highest earners, is joining Besiktas after the Turkish club triggered his £9m release clause.

British women have Birkin bags and jewellery worth £850k stolen from French hotel
Two British women had a million euros worth of Birkin bags, jewellery and cash stolen from their hotel room while on holiday, according to French reports. The unnamed five-star hotel has been plagued with break-ins this summer, with guests stripped of jewellery and belongings. The British women, who have not been named, had their jewellery stolen on the night of Aug 4 after arriving at the hotel only a few hours previously. They checked in at 5pm, went out for dinner in Saint-Tropez from 8pm until after midnight, and were burgled during that time. 'When they got back, the room had been ransacked, the door to the private terrace was broken, and the wall safe had been ripped out,' said a French friend, who acted as an interpreter when they filed a complaint on Wednesday. The thieves reportedly made off with 11 Hermès Birkin bags, along with Dior luggage, Patek Philippe watches, Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery and Cartier items, including an engagement ring. They also took bank cards and cash worth around €15,000 (£13,000). The total amount is estimated at close to a million euros (£867,000). 'They were completely cleaned out. They don't even have their passports any more. It's a holiday that has turned into a nightmare,' the friend, known only as Sabrina, told Var Matin. Third suspected theft at hotel The victims reportedly questioned the security measures put in place by the hotel. 'As luck would have it, no one heard anything. My friends contacted the owner, who claims he too is a victim,' Var Matin cited the women's friend as saying. The two victims, in shock, left the hotel and waited to be able to return home. 'Hotels that claim to be five-star should have a more sophisticated security system,' said their spokesman. 'It's a shame, it tarnishes the image of France and the village of Saint-Tropez.' This is not the first such brazen burglary at the same hotel, which has suffered two other suspected thefts in recent weeks. In a separate incident in early July, a Brazilian tourist's first trip to Saint-Tropez ended in disaster when two luxury watches worth €74,000 (£64,000) and €46,000 (£39,000), as well as €3,000 (£2600) in cash, were reportedly stolen from his room. The tourist was enjoying a workout and then breakfast at the hotel when the intruders ransacked his room, it is claimed. He complained that the hotel was dragging its feet over offering him compensation after he made an insurance claim. A hotel employee was questioned in relation to the case but was later released without charge. Around the same time, another visitor reportedly had two watches and €800 (£690) stolen from his hotel. Two employees have reportedly been summoned to appear before a court on Sep 10 in relation to the case. None of the stolen goods have been recovered and the investigation continues.
