Why nude dressing is trending on the red carpet
The 78th Cannes Film Festival wrapped up last week with an updated dress policy: 'nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival."
However, that didn't stop sheer, see-through sparkly dresses from appearing on the red carpet. The nude dress has often generated a lot of debate. Some see it as an attention seeking tool, while others hail it as a way to embrace one's femininity.
Reflecting her desire to celebrate her cultural roots, Gucci's global brand ambassador Alia Bhatt wore a custom "nude" three-piece set, embroidered with crystals in a GG Monogram pattern, that looked lehnga inspired. Another 'naked" beaded dress was worn by Dakota Johnson at the Kering Women in Motion Awards at Cannes. Her outfit featured a sporty, halter-like neckline, as well as a fitted bodice and a diaphanous skirt.

Halle Berry, too, thumbed her nose at the no-nudity rule and sparkled in a sheer crystal-encrusted Gucci halter dress.
Paris Jackson deserves a mention too, as she attended the Cannes 2025 amfAR Gala in an almost nude gown that exposed her flesh-toned knickers. So did British model and TV presenter Leomie Anderson.
Homegrown designer label Shivan & Narresh have experimented with the naked dress over the years. Shivan Bhatiya, founder-head designer, points out that naked dressing was evident throughout this year—at the Grammys, various music awards, and the Met Gala. "Alia's look was especially impressive. They (Gucci) were able to give a nude look without making it look obscene," he says.

When it comes to adapting the 'nude", or nude-coloured, look for everyday wear, it really depends on the occasion. "For evenings, sticking to monotones works beautifully—monotone outfits are a safe bet for both day and night," he suggests.
If one's wearing separates, one should try pairing a nude top with printed trousers or skirts for a stylish contrast.
Designer Shweta Kapur of label 431-88 observes that the nude trend at Cannes was a mood. "It's less about showing skin and more about celebrating it. There's something unapologetically powerful about baring it all in such a refined, intentional way. It's not loud, it's not trying—it just is. That effortless sensuality, the kind that doesn't need validation. That's the energy," she says.
Bringing the nude trend into your everyday wardrobe is all about contrast and confidence. "Incorporate sheer nude turtlenecks under oversized blazers—polished, but with just enough skin to keep it interesting. Or a sand-toned slip dress layered with a cropped utility jacket and chunky boots. It's about soft fabrics in strong shapes: nude mesh tops with sharp trousers, second-skin bodysuits under structured denim," Kapur says.
One can even play with tonal layering—mixing creams, beiges, taupes—for that 'undone but intentional' vibe. The trick? Don't over-style. Let the skin-toned palette speak for itself.
Priyanka Kathuria, founder, wardrobe consultancy Altique, suggests layering a sheer blouse over a bralette or a tank top. "You can also play with sheer sleeves or panels, or structured gowns that come with side cutouts," she suggests.

The film is a co-production among National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), Glocal Films UK Limited (founded by Odisha-born, London-based producer Partha Panda, and Jitendra Mishra's Cinema4Good Pvt. Ltd, 'Baghuni' is a co-production--the first of its kind for any film from Odisha, with the National Film Development Corporation(NFDC) returning to the state after a 23-year gap in significant cinematic collaborations. On the inspiration behind the film, he shared, "It's about women's empowerment, and a girl holding a protest in a male-dominated society, and how a lady is stepping out and fighting for her rights, so it is all about this." While talking about the film, he added, "We named it 'Baghuni'(Dance Like a Tiger) means Tigress and we had a dance called 'Bagha Nacha', (the Tiger dance is the traditional art form performed in Binka, Sonepur, and some parts of Ganjam district in Odisha), and the story was written by one of the good directors, his name is Jitendra Mishra, so we had a conversation from last 3-4 years ago about the story, so we developed the story, then we were going step by step, so first time in 2023, this story was selected in the NFDC co-production market, then luckily, out of 11 countries, 20 stories were selected and we were one of them, which was a good thing about that, and particularly for Odia language, this type of thing, like NFDC involvement happened after 23 years. He is a Managing Director, Film Producer & Arts Impresario. Despite being in a different profession, he always remained passionate about cinema. Sharing how his journey in filmmaking started, he added, "Every time I watch a movie from childhood, it's always I wanted to involve in film, but for me, when I was doing my graduation, that time I had an interest, either I wanted to become a director or something involved in the movie industry, but my study and everything was different. In my family, my mom is a good dancer, my dad studied in drama school, so we have a little understanding about that, which came a little from the family. So, the first time I tried was in 2008-09, but I could not finish that project for some reason." "Then I tried again in 2011, but again, we could not find the right person who could do the job together, because in this type of thing, finding the right director or person who can guide you is tricky. I found my friend, Jitendra Mishra. So, I thought, this is the guy with whom I can do the job. So, that's where the conversation started, and we were sort of working on this project for the last four years." Panda further discussed Odisha's cinema. According to him, the Odisha film market is still struggling; however, it is getting better, and with achievements like his film reaching Cannes, it gives a boost to the industry overall. "Odisha market, it's not that strong at the moment. But it's getting better. So, there was last... I don't know, maybe 5 to 10 years, there was a gap where people were not supporting that much, however, now things are improving," he said. Written and directed by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Jitendra Mishra, 'Baghuni' is the first international co-production from Odisha, featuring celebrated Odia actor Sabyasachi Mishra as the lead actor, and boasts a talented crew that includes multiple National Award-winning industry professionals.

Thug Life Trouble: Kamal Haasan moves Karnataka High Court amid Kannada language controversy
Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role, is slated to release on June 5, 2025. As the film is just days away from hitting the big screens, it faces a ban in Karnataka; however, the actor has moved to the High Court against it. As per reports, the veteran actor's production company, Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI), has filed a petition against the court to direct the Karnataka state government, the police department, and film trade bodies not to prevent the movie's release. The petition filed by Kamal Haasan comes after the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) had decided to ban the Thug Life release over outbursts from pro-Kannada groups. The film body had announced that the veteran actor would be given an ultimatum to apologize for his remark by May 30, 2025. However, Haasan has dismissed this and highlighted that he would only apologize for something if he had done something wrong. Although he does not believe that this is the case, this time. The protests and threats of a ban against the actor and his films arose after he commented on the Kannada language. During the Thug Life audio launch, the actor emphasized that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil,' which did not sit well with many people. Talking about the film, Thug Life is an action thriller that tells the story of Rangaraya Sakthivel Naicker, a Yakuza-like gangster. Presumed dead, the gangster makes a return from his grave and suspects his foster son, Amaran, to be the conspirator who wants him dead. What follows in the film is a battle of death between father and son, with one emerging on top.
